Chapter 5 - The Man Inside the Vault

Gabriel Vescari applauded slowly.

“Finally.”

Lorenzo raised his gun.

Gabriel smiled.

“You shoot me, you lose everything.”

“I’ve already lost everything.”

“No.”

Gabriel looked at Sofia.

“You still have something.”

Lorenzo moved in front of his daughter.

Emma pulled Sofia back.

Elena aimed her pistol.

“This ends tonight.”

Gabriel laughed.

“It ended twenty-nine years ago.”

Behind him stood rows of old servers, filing cabinets, hard drives, and a central terminal built into the wall.

The Bellandi archive.

Information that powerful people had murdered to control.

Gabriel looked at Emma.

“You have Lucia’s eyes.”

“I hope that bothers you.”

“It does.”

“Good.”

He pointed toward the terminal.

“Open it.”

Emma did not move.

“I don’t know how.”

“You know the song.”

“Not the last line.”

“Sofia does.”

The child shrank behind Emma.

Lorenzo stepped forward.

“You will not speak to her.”

Gabriel sighed.

“You’re so much like Carlo.”

Lorenzo’s eyes hardened.

“My father would have killed you already.”

“Your father tried.”

Gabriel lifted his shirt slightly.

A scar crossed his ribs.

“Family tradition.”

Emma looked toward the terminal.

Four symbols glowed.

River.

Star.

Moon.

Flame.

The song.

Each lyric corresponded to a symbol.

She understood.

“The melody chooses the order.”

Elena nodded.

“And the words choose the symbols.”

Emma entered the sequence.

River.

Flame.

Stars.

The final symbol remained.

Moon?

No.

Sofia whispered:

“Truth survives.”

Emma looked around.

No truth symbol.

“What did your mother do when she sang the last line?”

Sofia thought.

“She touched my heart.”

Emma looked at the terminal.

A fingerprint scanner.

Not heart.

Biometric.

She took Sofia’s hand.

Gabriel raised his gun.

“Do it.”

Lorenzo moved.

Gunfire exploded.

Marco fired from the doorway.

Gabriel’s weapon fell.

Elena kicked it away.

Lorenzo grabbed Gabriel and slammed him against the wall.

“Who poisoned my daughter?”

Gabriel laughed through blood.

“Ask her doctor.”

Lorenzo looked at Romano.

Romano had followed them inside.

His face collapsed.

Emma’s stomach dropped.

“No.”

Romano backed away.

“I had no choice.”

Lorenzo released Gabriel.

He turned slowly.

Romano began crying.

“They had my grandchildren.”

“You poisoned Sofia.”

“Tiny doses.”

“You poisoned my child.”

“I was trying to keep her alive.”

Emma stared.

“By making her sick?”

“If Gabriel believed she was too weak to remember the song, he delayed.”

Lorenzo crossed the room.

Romano whispered:

“I bought her two years.”

“You stole two years.”

“I saved her life.”

“You stole her childhood.”

Romano had no answer.

Sofia watched from behind Emma.

Lorenzo saw her.

His fists unclenched.

He did not kill Romano.

That surprised everyone.

Especially Lorenzo.

“Marco.”

“Yes.”

“Take him.”

Romano was led away.

Gabriel smiled.

“Mercy.”

Lorenzo looked at him.

“No. My daughter is watching.”

Gabriel’s smile faded.

Emma placed Sofia’s palm on the scanner.

Nothing.

Elena frowned.

“Maybe it needs both.”

Emma placed her hand beside Sofia’s.

The terminal lit.

ACCESS CONFIRMED.

Two names appeared.

EMMA BELLANDI.

SOFIA PELLEGRINI.

Emma felt the world tilt.

Folders opened.

Financial records.

Audio recordings.

Video.

One file carried Isabella’s name.

Lorenzo stopped breathing.

ISABELLA_P_FINAL.

He clicked.

Isabella appeared on screen.

Alive.

Smiling sadly.

Lorenzo stepped back.

“My God.”

The recording began.

“If you’re watching this, Lorenzo, then I failed.”

His hand covered his mouth.

Sofia stared.

“Mama.”

Isabella continued.

“I need you to know that I loved you. None of what happened was your fault.”

Emma looked at Lorenzo.

He was crying openly now.

“Gabriel discovered the archive. Dr. Romano is being threatened. I don’t know who else I can trust.”

Romano’s betrayal suddenly became more complicated.

Isabella looked directly into the camera.

“If something happens to me, protect Sofia. But do not imprison her with your fear.”

Lorenzo closed his eyes.

The words hit harder than any accusation.

“You watch when you are afraid, Lorenzo. You control when you cannot bear uncertainty. Please do not turn our daughter into another room you can lock.”

Emma looked toward the cameras imagined throughout the estate.

Isabella had known him perfectly.

The recording continued.

“The archive should never belong to one person. Lucia designed the final access around two bloodlines so nobody could rule with it alone.”

Emma and Sofia.

“Emma Foster is Lucia’s daughter. If Helen kept her safe, she will know the song.”

Emma began crying.

Her mother—Helen—had kept her promise.

Isabella’s final words came.

“Lorenzo, if Sofia remembers me through music, let her sing. Let her live.”

The video ended.

No one spoke.

Gabriel suddenly lunged toward the terminal.

Elena fired.

The bullet struck his shoulder.

He fell.

Marco restrained him.

Lorenzo did not even look.

He stared at the blank screen.

Sofia approached him.

“Daddy?”

He knelt.

“I’m sorry.”

“For what?”

“For watching instead of listening.”

Sofia touched his face.

“I knew you watched.”

That broke him again.

Emma stepped away.

She opened another file.

HELEN_FOSTER.

Her hands trembled.

Inside was an audio recording.

Helen’s voice.

“Emma, if you ever hear this, I’m sorry I couldn’t tell you.”

Emma sat down.

“I loved you from the second Lucia placed you in my arms.”

Tears blurred the screen.

“You were never a burden. Never a secret I was ashamed of. You were my daughter in every way that mattered.”

Emma pressed her hand to her mouth.

Elena stood beside her.

Helen continued.

“Lucia believed one day the truth would find you. I hoped she was wrong.”

Emma laughed through tears.

Of course Helen had.

The recording ended with the lullaby.

The real final verse.

Emma finally understood.

The song had never been a key to money.

It was a promise between mothers.

A promise that their daughters would survive men who believed power belonged to them.

Then the archive terminal beeped.

A new screen appeared.

EXTERNAL ACCESS DETECTED.

Marco rushed forward.

“Someone’s downloading files.”

Emma stared.

“From where?”

Marco’s face went pale.

“From the Pellegrini estate.”

Lorenzo looked up.

Someone was still inside his home.

Someone with access to everything.

Then Emma’s phone vibrated.

A photograph arrived.

It showed Lorenzo’s estate.

Sofia’s empty hospital bed.

And a woman standing beside it.

May you like

Elena looked at the picture and whispered:

“That woman is supposed to be dead.”
