Chapter 6 - The Secret My Mother Left Behind

The black envelope moved.
Only slightly.
But everyone saw it.
Nobody spoke.
The hidden compartment remained open, revealing the envelope sitting inside like someone had placed it there moments ago.
Dominic stared at it.
Then at his father.
Then back at the phone message.
"Don't open the envelope. Your father is the reason I disappeared."
The words were still glowing on the screen.
A warning from a woman who had been gone for years.
A warning about the man standing only a few feet away.
Dominic slowly lowered the phone.
"Explain."
His father didn't move.
"I can."
"No."
Dominic's voice became colder.
"You can start by telling me why my dead mother is sending me messages telling me not to trust you."
The older man looked tired.
Not guilty.
Tired.
Like he had been carrying a secret for too long.
"Because your mother never understood what I was protecting her from."
Adrian stepped forward.
"That's a lie."
Dominic looked at him.
"You knew?"
Adrian didn't answer immediately.
That was enough.
Dominic's face changed.
"You knew."
"I knew pieces."
"Pieces?"
Dominic laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
"My entire life has been pieces."
Nobody said anything.
I watched him.
The man everyone feared looked different now.
Not weaker.
Just human.
A son standing in front of the people who destroyed his understanding of his own family.
I looked at the envelope.
"What is inside?"
Everyone turned toward me.
The older man looked at me carefully.
"Proof."
"Proof of what?"
His eyes moved toward Dominic.
"Proof that your mother was never the person they said she was."
I frowned.
"I don't understand."
Dominic looked at me.
"Neither do I."
His father took a slow breath.
"Your mother discovered that the Caruso family was built on a lie."
The room became silent again.
"What lie?" Dominic asked.
His father looked at the old documents around them.
"Years ago, before you were born, your grandfather made a deal."
"With who?"
"A group of people who wanted control over everything your family owned."
Adrian interrupted.
"That is not the whole story."
Dominic turned.
"Then tell me the whole story."
Adrian looked away.
The silence was an answer.
Dominic stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Adrian finally spoke.
"Your grandfather didn't just make a deal."
A pause.
"He made a sacrifice."
The word felt wrong.
Cold.
"What does that mean?"
Adrian looked at me.
Then at Dominic.
"Your mother found out that the person who destroyed her life was someone inside the family."
Dominic's eyes narrowed.
"Who?"
Nobody answered.
I looked at Dominic's father.
He was staring at the floor.
And for the first time, I saw fear on his face.
Not fear of us.
Fear of what was coming.
The lights flickered.
Again.
The same way they had before.
Dominic immediately turned toward the entrance.
"Are we alone?"
The bodyguard checked his weapon.
"No."
Everyone froze.
"What do you mean?"
He looked at the security device in his hand.
"There are people moving through the mansion."
Dominic's expression hardened.
"How many?"
"At least four."
Adrian cursed quietly.
"Someone followed us."
Dominic looked at him.
"Who?"
Adrian didn't answer.
Because suddenly we heard footsteps.
Not one person.
Several.
Coming closer.
The hidden room was no longer a secret.
Someone knew.
Dominic grabbed the envelope from the compartment.
His father immediately stopped him.
"Don't."
Dominic looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because once you open it, there is no going back."
Dominic held the envelope tighter.
"I lost my mother because people kept secrets from me."
His eyes became cold.
"I'm done protecting secrets."
He opened it.
Inside was a small flash drive.
And a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was familiar.
Dominic knew it immediately.
"My mother."
He unfolded the paper.
His eyes moved across the words.
Then stopped.
"What?"
I stepped closer.
"Dominic?"
He didn't answer.
His hands were shaking.
The powerful man who never showed fear was suddenly struggling to breathe.
"What does it say?"
Slowly, he looked up.
"My mother wrote this the day she disappeared."
Nobody moved.
"What did she say?"
Dominic looked down at the letter again.
Then read one sentence.
"Dominic, if you are reading this, it means your father failed to keep the truth buried."
The room went silent.
His father closed his eyes.
Adrian looked away.
Dominic continued reading.
"Your father was not the person who tried to kill me."
A small moment of relief crossed his face.
Then disappeared.
Because he reached the next line.
And whatever he saw there changed everything.
"What?"
I asked.
Dominic didn't respond.
He turned the letter toward me.
There was one name written at the bottom.
A name that made my blood run cold.
Because I knew it.
It was the name of the person who hired me.
The person who sent me to the mansion.
The person who knew I would find the hidden room.
My hands started shaking.
"No..."
Dominic looked at me.
"You know this person."
I couldn't breathe.
Because the name on the letter belonged to someone I trusted my entire life.
Someone who had always told me they were protecting me.
Someone who had lied.
The mansion doors suddenly slammed open upstairs.
A voice echoed through the hallway.
"Clara."
I froze.
Because I recognized the voice.
And I hadn't heard it in fifteen years.
Dominic looked at me.
"Who is that?"
I couldn't answer.
The footsteps moved closer.
Then the person called my name again.
May you like
"Clara, you were never supposed to find this."
And the hidden room door behind us slowly locked from the outside.
