Chapter 9 - The Room Behind Sweet Mercy

Serena could not move.

The door opened.

An old recording played from a tape machine.

Her father’s voice.

Not a ghost.

Not another resurrection.

Just Thomas.

Serena laughed once through sudden tears.

“Apparently dead people leaving recordings is a family tradition.”

Damiano lowered his weapon.

The hidden room was tiny.

Shelves lined the walls.

Thomas and Evelyn had built it together.

A safe stood at the end.

The recording continued.

“Serena, if you found this, Evelyn and I couldn’t protect you forever.”

She sat down.

Thomas explained that he knew everything.

Lucia.

Carlo.

Marco.

The trust.

He and Evelyn had chosen to raise Serena not because they were ordered to, but because they loved her.

“You were ours before we ever held you,” Thomas said.

Serena covered her mouth.

Damiano stood quietly behind her.

“You may someday learn that blood gave you another family. Let it add to your life. Never let it subtract from what we were.”

Serena cried then.

Not delicately.

Not cinematically.

She cried like a daughter who had spent days questioning every childhood memory and had finally been given permission to keep them.

Damiano sat beside her.

He did not tell her to stop.

He simply held her hand.

When the recording finished, they opened the safe.

Inside were originals of Carlo’s records.

Passports.

Cash.

And a sealed letter addressed to federal prosecutors.

Thomas and Evelyn had been preparing to expose Carlo.

Thomas died before they could.

Serena looked at the date.

Two days before his fatal car accident.

Her grief became anger.

“Carlo killed him.”

Damiano didn’t lie.

“Probably.”

Evelyn had spent the next fourteen years protecting Serena while quietly preserving the evidence.

“She was waiting until I was old enough.”

“Yes.”

“And then she got sick.”

Serena nodded.

Cancer had taken Evelyn at fifty-eight.

She had died believing Serena was safe.

Carlo’s return had changed that.

The federal agents took the evidence.

Arrest warrants followed.

Properties were raided.

Associates flipped.

Carlo’s remaining organization began collapsing.

But Carlo vanished.

Three days passed.

Then five.

Serena reopened Sweet Mercy.

Life attempted normality.

Customers returned.

Someone posted a photograph online of Damiano carrying flour sacks.

It went viral locally.

“Brooklyn Crime Prince Becomes Bakery Intern.”

Serena laughed for ten straight minutes.

Damiano did not.

“You look cute.”

“I look ridiculous.”

“You’re holding all-purpose flour like it insulted your mother.”

“It was heavy.”

“It was ten pounds.”

He glared.

She kissed his cheek.

The internet noticed them too.

Rumors began.

Serena ignored them.

Damiano tried.

Their relationship remained undefined.

He came for coffee every morning.

Stayed for dinner most nights.

Fixed the broken back door.

Learned not to use steel wool.

Serena taught him how to pipe buttercream.

His roses looked like cabbages.

Leo called them “sad vegetables.”

Marco nearly fell off a chair laughing.

For a little while, they had something almost normal.

Marco and Elena were trying too.

Slowly.

Leo learned the truth in pieces appropriate for a seven-year-old.

Marco was his father.

Marco had been away because dangerous people made it unsafe for him to return.

Leo asked whether Marco liked dinosaurs.

“I do now.”

That answer was enough.

Rosa visited Sweet Mercy one afternoon.

She carried a small velvet box.

Serena stiffened.

“Please tell me that isn’t the ruby.”

“It is.”

The federal agents had recovered the cameo from Hale.

Rosa placed it on the counter.

“It belongs to you.”

“No.”

“It belonged to Lucia.”

“Then keep it.”

“She wanted you to have it.”

Serena touched the red stone.

The object that had started everything.

Or seemed to.

“I don’t want something people hurt each other for.”

Rosa smiled sadly.

“Then make it mean something else.”

Serena considered.

She removed the cameo from its diamond setting.

Later, she placed it inside a simple frame beside photographs of Evelyn, Thomas, and Lucia.

Not wealth.

Memory.

That evening, Damiano arrived after closing.

He looked exhausted.

“Bad day?”

“Hale agreed to cooperate.”

“That sounds like a good day.”

“He gave us Carlo’s location.”

Serena stopped.

“Where?”

“A house in Connecticut.”

“Then why are you here?”

“Because I’m not going.”

She stared.

“Why?”

“The agents can arrest him.”

Damiano poured coffee.

“I spent my life believing protecting my family meant I had to personally destroy every threat.”

“And now?”

“Now I think sometimes protecting them means coming home.”

Serena’s heart moved painfully.

“You consider this home?”

He looked around the bakery.

Then at her.

“I’m beginning to.”

She kissed him.

The raid happened at midnight.

Carlo wasn’t there.

The house was empty.

But investigators found plans.

Photographs.

Sweet Mercy.

Mia’s home.

Rosa’s apartment.

Leo’s school.

And one photograph of Serena and Damiano kissing through the bakery window.

Across it Carlo had written:

HER WEAKNESS.

Damiano stared.

Marco stood beside him.

“He thinks Serena’s your weakness.”

“He’s wrong.”

“What is she?”

Damiano folded the photograph.

“My reason to stop becoming him.”

A phone rang.

Serena’s.

She answered at the bakery.

“Hello?”

A familiar elderly voice.

“Hello, Serena.”

She froze.

Carlo.

“I wanted to meet my wife’s daughter before this ended.”

“It’s already ending.”

“Not yet.”

“What do you want?”

“To give you the truth.”

“I have enough.”

“No. You have Lucia’s truth. Evelyn’s truth. Damiano’s truth.”

“And yours is somehow better?”

“My truth explains why Thomas died.”

Serena stopped breathing.

Carlo gave an address.

“Come alone.”

“No.”

“Then you’ll never know which Vercelli ordered his death.”

The call ended.

Serena immediately called Damiano.

No answer.

She tried again.

Nothing.

Then she received a photograph.

Damiano unconscious in the back seat of a car.

Beneath it:

I SAID COME ALONE.

Serena grabbed her yellow handbag.

She reached for the bakery door.

May you like

It was already unlocked.

Someone was waiting outside.
