Chapter 6 - The Night the Obsidian Room Locked Down

Lydia March smiled.

She was younger than Dominic.

Early thirties.

Dark hair.

Green eyes.

The resemblance was subtle until Mara looked carefully.

Then she saw it.

The same stillness.

The same habit of watching the room before speaking.

Dominic’s half sister held no weapon.

She didn’t need one.

The trust seal was enough.

“Give it to me,” Dominic said.

Lydia tilted her head.

“You don’t even know what it does.”

“I know enough.”

“No. You know what Venn told you.”

Charles Venn moved behind one of the guards.

Daniel noticed.

“Don’t try it.”

Venn smiled.

“I’m standing still.”

Lydia looked at Mara.

“You translated the clause.”

“Yes.”

“My father said you would.”

Mara’s anger returned.

“Your father seems to know a lot about my life.”

“He kept you alive.”

“So everyone tells me.”

Lydia almost smiled.

“Daniel said you’d hate that sentence.”

Daniel sighed.

“She does.”

Dominic stepped forward.

“Where is Gabriel?”

“Close.”

“Bring him here.”

“He won’t come.”

“Why?”

“Because he thinks you’ll kill him.”

Dominic’s expression did not change.

“Is he wrong?”

Lydia glanced at Celeste.

“Probably not.”

Celeste stepped forward.

“You stole the seal from me.”

“I borrowed it.”

“You had someone copy my key.”

“My stylist persona took three months to build. Please don’t reduce it to copying a key.”

Under any other circumstances Mara might have admired the audacity.

Celeste did not.

“You touched my hair.”

“Yes.”

“You chose my dress.”

“Yes.”

“You told me burgundy made me look powerful.”

Lydia shrugged.

“It does.”

Celeste lunged.

Evelyn caught her.

“Later.”

Dominic held out his hand.

“The seal.”

Lydia’s smile vanished.

“My father didn’t arrange tonight to steal your trust.”

“Then what did he arrange?”

“To stop Venn from transferring it to the wrong person.”

Venn laughed.

“This family loves mythology.”

Lydia turned toward him.

“You changed the beneficiary designation.”

“No.”

“You forged Dominic’s authorization.”

“No.”

“You arranged Victor Laurent’s death.”

Celeste froze.

Venn’s expression hardened.

“My father died of a heart attack,” Celeste said.

Lydia looked at her.

“No.”

Evelyn gripped Celeste’s arm.

“What?”

Lydia continued.

“Victor wanted out.”

Venn shook his head.

“This is absurd.”

“He had cancer. Six months to live. He contacted Gabriel and offered everything he knew in exchange for protection for Celeste.”

Celeste’s face crumpled.

“My father contacted Gabriel?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Nine years ago.”

“He died eight years ago.”

“Yes.”

Celeste stared at Venn.

“What did you do?”

Venn’s smile disappeared.

Dominic looked at his guards.

“Hold him.”

They seized Venn.

Lydia placed the trust seal on the table.

“The final amendment names Evelyn Laurent.”

Evelyn frowned.

“Why me?”

“Because Venn needed a beneficiary he believed was dead.”

Daniel nodded.

“So he could control the trust through forged probate documents.”

“Exactly.”

Mara understood.

“If Evelyn was legally declared dead, he could manipulate whoever represented her estate.”

Lydia looked impressed.

“Yes.”

Dominic glanced at Mara.

“That linguistics degree keeps getting less useless.”

Celeste winced.

Mara noticed.

Dominic did too.

Celeste looked at Mara.

“I deserved that.”

Mara said nothing.

Lydia opened her phone.

“The amendment becomes active at midnight. But if Dominic revokes it with the original seal before then, Venn loses control.”

Dominic checked the time.

11:31.

“Where’s the revocation?”

Lydia looked at Daniel.

Daniel opened the ledger.

A hidden sleeve contained a single legal form.

Venn started struggling.

“No.”

Dominic smiled without warmth.

“That sounds promising.”

“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”

“I’m beginning to.”

Venn shouted toward Celeste.

“Tell him!”

Celeste stared.

“Tell him what?”

Venn laughed.

“Your marriage agreement.”

Dominic looked at his wife.

“What about it?”

Celeste went pale.

Venn continued.

“If Dominic revokes the trust amendment, the marital succession clause activates.”

Lydia frowned.

“That clause was removed.”

Venn smiled.

“Was it?”

Dominic looked at Celeste.

“Do you know about this?”

“No.”

Venn laughed harder.

Mara hated the sound.

“What does it do?” she asked.

Venn looked at her.

“Still playing lawyer?”

“Still translating permanently incorrectly?”

Dominic’s mouth twitched.

Venn’s eyes narrowed.

Daniel pulled a copy of the marriage agreement from the ledger.

Mara opened it.

English.

Except for one paragraph written in Latin.

She stared.

Dominic noticed.

“You can read that too?”

“Some.”

Celeste almost groaned.

Mara translated slowly.

“In the event that the principal family trust is dissolved, revoked, or rendered invalid, controlling authority passes to…”

She stopped.

Dominic stepped closer.

“To whom?”

Mara read the name.

“Spousal successor.”

Celeste stared.

“Me.”

Venn smiled.

“Congratulations.”

Dominic looked at his wife.

“You’d control everything.”

“I don’t want it.”

“That doesn’t matter,” Daniel said. “Venn could then target Celeste legally.”

Evelyn understood first.

“He planned to make her beneficiary after all.”

“Not directly,” Daniel said. “Through the marriage agreement.”

Celeste looked sick.

“All these years…”

Venn spoke softly.

“You enjoyed the money.”

Celeste slapped him.

No one stopped her.

“You killed my father.”

Venn smiled through the red mark on his cheek.

“Your father killed himself the moment he decided to confess.”

Evelyn lunged.

Dominic caught her.

“Not here.”

“Why not?”

“Because he needs to talk.”

Venn laughed.

“You’re running out of time.”

11:39.

Daniel spread the documents across the table.

“We need a way to revoke the trust and nullify the spousal succession at the same time.”

Mara scanned the text.

Legal English.

Italian appendices.

Latin succession clause.

Three languages used specifically to prevent any single reader from easily noticing contradictions.

Then she saw something.

“Wait.”

Everyone looked at her.

“The Latin clause references ‘lawful spouse under uninterrupted civil marriage.’”

Celeste frowned.

“So?”

Mara looked at Dominic.

“Have you ever legally separated?”

Dominic stared.

Celeste answered.

“Three years ago.”

Everyone turned.

Dominic’s expression darkened.

“For six weeks.”

“We filed privately.”

Daniel grabbed the document.

“If there was a legal separation, the marriage was interrupted.”

Lydia smiled.

“So the succession clause is void.”

Venn stopped smiling.

Mara looked at him.

“That was the part you missed.”

Venn’s face hardened.

Dominic placed the revocation form on the table.

“Pen.”

Mara handed him one from her order book.

He signed.

Daniel applied the seal.

11:43.

Nothing happened.

Dominic looked up.

“That’s it?”

Lydia checked her phone.

“We need to file it electronically.”

“Do it.”

“No connection.”

The room’s Wi-Fi died.

Cell service vanished.

The chandelier flickered.

Dominic looked toward the ceiling.

“Gabriel?”

Lydia shook her head.

“No.”

Venn smiled.

“There it is.”

Daniel grabbed him.

“What did you do?”

“I planned for competent people.”

Suddenly steel shutters dropped over both private entrances.

The Obsidian Room locked down.

Mara jumped.

Celeste looked around.

“What is happening?”

Venn laughed.

“You have seventeen minutes.”

Dominic’s security chief tried the door.

“Sealed.”

Lydia checked the windows.

“No external access.”

Daniel stared at Venn.

“Who is outside?”

Venn said nothing.

Dominic stepped close.

“Charles.”

Venn looked into his eyes.

“You always thought your father’s enemies were afraid of you.”

Dominic remained still.

“They weren’t.”

Venn smiled.

“They were waiting for you to inherit.”

11:45.

Mara scanned the room.

No signal.

No exits.

A signed revocation that had to reach the trust server before midnight.

Then she remembered something.

“The wine terminal.”

Mr. Keller looked confused.

“What?”

“The sommelier tablet connects through a separate hard line for inventory.”

Keller’s eyes widened.

“The cellar network.”

“Is it connected to the internet?”

“Yes.”

Dominic pointed.

“Go.”

Mara ran toward the service cabinet.

The tablet was locked.

Keller entered his code.

No connection.

“Why?”

He checked the cable.

“Cut.”

Mara followed it.

The line disappeared behind the mahogany wall.

Dominic’s guard pulled the panel loose.

Severed wire.

11:48.

Daniel looked around.

“Any other hard line?”

Keller shook his head.

Mara remembered her first week at Le Triomphe.

Emergency compliance system.

Fire inspection rules.

“The alarm panel.”

Keller stared.

“It has a dedicated connection to city monitoring.”

“Can it transmit data?”

“I don’t know.”

Lydia was already opening the panel.

“Ethernet.”

Mara almost laughed.

Dominic handed her the document.

“How fast can you learn something you’ve never done?”

“Tonight?”

“Yes.”

“Apparently very fast.”

Lydia connected the tablet.

Signal.

11:51.

They photographed the revocation.

Uploaded.

The trust website opened.

LOGIN REQUIRED.

Dominic entered credentials.

Rejected.

Again.

Rejected.

“Password changed,” he said.

Venn smiled.

Mara looked at the recovery options.

Security question.

FIRST RESTAURANT PURCHASED BY SETTLOR.

“Le Triomphe,” Mara said.

Dominic entered it.

Reset code sent to registered email.

No access.

Lydia cursed.

11:54.

Mara noticed another option.

VOICE VERIFICATION.

Dominic pressed it.

A number called the restaurant landline.

The phone rang across the room.

Everyone stared.

Mara answered and handed it to Dominic.

Automated voice:

“Please repeat the verification phrase.”

Dominic frowned.

“What phrase?”

Venn laughed.

“You don’t know it.”

Celeste suddenly whispered:

“I do.”

Dominic turned.

“How?”

“Your father made you say it at our wedding.”

“What?”

She looked at him.

“You were drunk. You thought it was a toast.”

Dominic’s eyes narrowed.

“Celeste.”

She said the phrase.

“Family is chosen by loyalty, not blood.”

Dominic repeated it into the phone.

Verification accepted.

Mara uploaded the document.

11:57.

SUBMISSION PENDING.

Nobody breathed.

11:58.

Still pending.

Then the screen changed.

REVOCATION REJECTED.

Reason:

AUTHORIZED SETTLOR STATUS DISPUTED.

Dominic stared.

“What does that mean?”

Daniel’s face drained.

Venn began laughing.

Lydia looked at her father’s old files.

Then at Dominic.

“Someone filed a claim saying you aren’t Salvatore Rinaldi’s legal heir.”

Dominic’s eyes darkened.

“Who?”

The tablet displayed the challenger.

GABRIEL MORETTI.

Celeste whispered, “Your father is blocking you.”

Dominic’s phone suddenly rang despite the dead signal.

One bar appeared.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

He answered.

Gabriel’s voice filled the silent room.

“Dominic, if you want to save the trust, stop trying to prove you’re Salvatore’s son.”

Dominic’s face changed.

“Then what do I prove?”

Gabriel answered.

“That you’re mine.”

May you like

The line went dead.

And the clock changed to 11:59.
