Chapter 14 - I Had One Night to Bring My Son Home

The woman wasn't Hannah.

I knew that before opening the door.

Grief can make a man stupid.

It did not make me blind.

Her name was Claire Benton.

She had shared a rehabilitation room with Hannah years before Noah's birth.

Victor had found her.

Paid her.

Then used her identity to create false medical documents designed to make it appear Hannah survived.

One final attempt to destabilize me.

But Claire had come voluntarily.

She carried Victor's last insurance policy.

A ledger naming every person he had compromised.

Judges.

Police.

Executives.

Men in my organization.

She handed it over.

"Why?"

"Because he's in custody. And I'm tired of being afraid."

I understood that.

The following morning, federal agents moved Victor.

His convoy was attacked.

For twenty terrifying minutes, nobody knew whether he had escaped.

Then confirmation arrived.

He had not.

His own remaining men had tried to free him.

They failed.

Victor was transferred to a secure facility.

The war was over.

At least the violent part.

The harder part began.

I dismantled every illegal branch of my organization.

Some men protested.

They were free to leave.

Most did.

I turned the legitimate businesses into what Hannah had wanted them to become.

Noah's trust was placed under independent management.

No more secrets.

No more shadow accounts.

No more inherited wars.

Weeks passed.

Noah began therapy again.

This time, he talked.

Not constantly.

Not easily.

But enough.

He told me about Hannah.

About the crash.

About being scared of black cars.

About thinking that if he spoke, the bad man would return.

I cried in front of him.

I didn't care who saw.

Elena stayed.

Not as a maid.

I offered her money.

She refused.

I offered her a position running the family foundation.

She accepted.

"Because Hannah would haunt me if I didn't," she said.

I smiled.

One night we returned to the ballroom.

Empty now.

The same chandeliers.

The same gold chair.

Elena stood beneath them.

"Do you remember what you promised?"

I groaned.

"Unfortunately."

"Any woman who made Noah speak."

"I was emotionally unstable."

"You sounded very confident."

"I was also drinking."

She laughed.

Then became serious.

"You don't owe me marriage."

"I know."

"Good."

I stepped closer.

"But what if I want it?"

Her smile disappeared.

"Preston."

"No bargains. No debts. No promises made to a room full of strangers."

I took her hand.

"Just me asking you."

Her eyes filled.

Before I could continue, Noah ran into the ballroom.

"Dad!"

"What?"

He was holding the music box.

"The song stopped."

I took it.

The mechanism had jammed.

Then something fell from underneath.

A final folded note.

Hannah's handwriting.

My hands shook as I opened it.

There were only five words.

Preston, choose love after me.

I couldn't speak.

Elena read it.

Then cried.

Noah looked between us.

"Why are you crying?"

I laughed through tears.

"Because your mother is still bossy."

He smiled.

Then Elena looked at me.

"Ask me again."

May you like

I reached into my pocket.

But before I could take out the ring, every light in the ballroom suddenly went dark.
