Chapter 4 - What Isabella Saw

Vincent looked directly into the camera.

Then he smiled.

It was the most frightening expression I'd seen on him.

Not because it was cruel.

Because it was calm.

"He's watching us."

Dominic looked around.

"Kill the network."

One guard pulled out his phone.

"No signal."

"Hardline?"

"Checking."

Vincent turned to me.

"Claire, take the girls back to the vehicle."

"No."

His eyes sharpened.

"This isn't a discussion."

"Then stop treating it like one."

I pointed at Isabella.

"Every time you send her away, adults decide the truth for her."

Vincent went silent.

"You want her to trust you?" I said. "Let her choose whether she stays."

His jaw worked.

Then he crouched.

"Isabella."

She looked at him.

"Do you want to leave?"

She shook her head.

"Do you want to stay?"

A nod.

Vincent closed his eyes briefly.

"Okay."

Dominic looked stunned.

Vincent stood.

"If anyone comes near these children, stop them."

Nobody needed clarification.

The camera light blinked again.

Then the monitor inside the hidden room turned on by itself.

Static filled the screen.

A grainy video appeared.

Timestamp:

ELEVEN MONTHS EARLIER.

Vincent moved closer.

Isabella made a small sound.

Mia squeezed her hand.

The footage showed Elena's old bedroom.

I recognized the swan sitting on a dresser.

Young Isabella entered.

She wore pajamas.

She looked happy.

Talking.

We couldn't hear the audio yet.

Vincent stared at the screen like a starving man watching food through glass.

His daughter had a voice.

She laughed at something.

Vincent's face broke.

Then the bedroom door opened.

A man entered.

Only his back was visible.

Silver hair.

Tall.

Dark suit.

Square black ring.

Vincent whispered, "Dad."

Dominic stepped closer.

"That's impossible."

The man turned slightly.

The image glitched.

We couldn't see his face.

He knelt beside Isabella.

She seemed confused but not afraid.

She knew him.

Then he pointed toward the swan.

Isabella shook her head.

The man stood.

Another figure entered.

Dr. Keller.

Vincent looked at him.

Keller stared at the floor.

On-screen, Keller gave Isabella something in a cup.

The little girl resisted.

The older man held her shoulders.

Vincent lunged toward Keller.

Dominic caught him.

"Not in front of her."

Vincent struggled for one second.

Then stopped.

His entire body shook.

"You touched my daughter."

Keller was crying now.

"I thought I was saving her."

"From what?"

The video answered.

Isabella suddenly crawled beneath the bed.

The older man searched the room.

He opened drawers.

Closets.

Then he found the swan.

As he lifted it, a woman's voice came from the doorway.

Elena.

Vincent staggered backward.

"That's not eleven months ago."

Dominic frowned.

"What?"

"Elena died three years ago."

We all looked at the timestamp.

Vincent moved closer.

The date was impossible.

He replayed the opening frame.

Then Dominic saw it.

"Wait."

He pointed to the corner.

A date embedded separately in the original camera system.

Three years earlier.

The file had been copied eleven months ago.

Not recorded.

Vincent stared.

"So Isabella watched this video eleven months ago."

Keller nodded weakly.

"Yes."

It made sense.

The child hadn't witnessed the original scene in person.

She had discovered proof of what happened years earlier.

Vincent turned back to the screen.

Elena entered.

She looked furious.

"Give me the box."

The older man faced her.

We still couldn't hear dialogue.

But Elena grabbed his arm.

The black ring flashed.

Then Keller stepped between them.

Elena pointed toward the door.

Keller left.

The older man stayed.

The recording cut.

Vincent stood perfectly still.

"Where's the rest?"

Keller whispered, "I don't know."

Dominic looked at him.

"You copied this."

Keller shook his head.

"I was sent a copy."

"By whom?"

"The same person."

"The distorted voice?"

"Yes."

Vincent looked at Isabella.

"How did she see it?"

Keller wiped his face.

"Someone sent it to her tablet."

Vincent's eyes turned murderous.

"Someone sent my daughter a video of her dead mother confronting her grandfather?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"To scare her."

"Into silence?"

"Into forgetting."

Keller swallowed.

"I was told there were more files. That if Isabella remembered where Elena hid them, she would become a target."

Dominic stepped forward.

"So you drugged her."

"I gave her medication intended to reduce traumatic recall."

"Without her father's consent."

"I thought—"

"You didn't think," I said.

Everyone looked at me.

I didn't care anymore.

"You saw a terrified child and let someone turn her fear into an experiment."

Keller lowered his head.

Mia was watching me.

I forced myself to calm down.

Isabella touched her throat again.

Then she pointed at the monitor.

"More."

Vincent stared.

"What did you say?"

Isabella whispered:

"More."

Vincent dropped to his knees.

Tears filled his eyes instantly.

"Yes, baby."

She pointed at the computer.

"There is more."

Four words.

Four.

After eleven months of silence.

Vincent almost reached for her.

Then stopped himself.

"Can Daddy hug you?"

She nodded.

He wrapped her gently in his arms.

Nobody spoke.

Even Dominic turned away.

Mia smiled.

"See? She talks."

I kissed her head.

"She does."

Vincent pulled back.

"Where is the rest?"

Isabella looked at the swan.

Then the key.

Then she drew a square in the air.

"Box?" Mia asked.

Isabella nodded.

Dominic frowned.

"The swan contains more than the key?"

Vincent examined it.

The hidden compartment was empty.

Mia looked at Isabella.

"Not that one?"

Isabella shook her head.

She pointed at the broken swan inside room 317.

Vincent retrieved it.

The neck had been snapped.

Inside the hollow porcelain was a rolled strip of paper.

A map.

Hand drawn.

Dominic recognized the layout.

"Your townhouse."

Vincent studied it.

A red X marked a room in the basement.

Vincent's face changed.

"There is no room there."

Dominic said, "There wasn't when I worked there."

Vincent looked at him.

"Worked?"

Dominic exhaled.

"Elena asked me to stop going downstairs."

"When?"

"A month before she died."

Vincent looked at the map.

We returned to Manhattan in silence.

The convoy took us to Vincent's townhouse on the Upper East Side.

It was enormous but dark.

Too quiet.

Staff had been sent away.

Security swept every floor.

The basement looked ordinary.

Wine storage.

Mechanical room.

Laundry.

Vincent followed the map.

The red X pointed behind a rack of vintage bottles.

Dominic and two guards moved it.

A steel panel appeared.

No handle.

Only a small square indentation.

Vincent looked at the key from the swan.

It fit.

The panel opened.

Stale air came out.

Inside was a narrow corridor.

Vincent looked at me.

"You and the girls stay here."

This time I agreed.

Not because he ordered me.

Because Isabella did not want to enter.

Vincent and Dominic disappeared down the passage.

Minutes passed.

Then ten.

Mia sat beside Isabella.

I watched the hallway.

Finally Vincent returned.

He carried a wooden box.

No one spoke.

He placed it on a table.

Elena's name was carved into the lid.

Vincent touched it like it might break him.

He opened it.

Inside were dozens of photographs.

Bank documents.

USB drives.

And one sealed envelope.

FOR VINCENT.

His hands shook as he opened it.

He read silently.

Then again.

Dominic watched.

"What does it say?"

Vincent looked up.

"My father didn't die."

Silence.

"He staged his death."

Keller had been brought with us and was sitting under guard.

His face went gray.

Vincent kept reading.

"Elena found out. She was collecting proof."

Dominic whispered, "Why?"

"Because my father was stealing from the organization. Selling names. Paying officials."

Vincent's voice cracked.

"And because Elena discovered he was planning to take Isabella."

I felt cold.

"Why?"

Vincent turned the page.

His face changed again.

"There should be another letter."

He searched the box.

Nothing.

Isabella suddenly stood.

She walked toward the opened steel passage.

"No, sweetheart," Vincent said.

She ignored him.

She entered the corridor.

We followed.

At the far end she stopped beside a brick wall.

Then she reached into a crack.

Her tiny fingers pulled out a folded photograph.

Vincent took it.

The picture showed Elena standing beside Angelo Moretti.

Between them was a baby.

On the back, Elena had written:

VINCENT MUST NEVER KNOW WHO ISABELLA'S BIOLOGICAL FATHER IS UNTIL ANGELO IS GONE.

Vincent stared at the words.

His face emptied.

Dominic whispered, "Vincent..."

Then Isabella spoke clearly behind us.

"Grandpa said Daddy would kill me if he knew."

Vincent turned so quickly he nearly dropped the photograph.

May you like

Isabella was crying.

"He said you're not my real daddy."
