Chapter 3 - My Brother's Confession

The emergency lights flickered red.
Damian moved in front of me.
Marcus tried the steel door.
Locked.
“Someone activated the magnetic seal.”
“Can you override it?” Damian asked.
“Give me a minute.”
I stared at Ethan's message.
Damian noticed.
“What did he say?”
I showed him.
His jaw tightened.
“Call him.”
I did.
Ethan answered immediately.
“Elena?”
“Where are you?”
“Outside.”
“With who?”
Silence.
“Ethan.”
“You need to leave.”
“We're locked in the basement.”
“What?”
The panic in his voice sounded real.
“You did this?” I asked.
“No.”
“Your signature is on Luca's file.”
Another silence.
Damian took the phone.
“Explain.”
Ethan breathed heavily.
“Voss.”
“Explain the signature.”
“I can't over the phone.”
“You have thirty seconds before I decide you're responsible for my brother's murder.”
“I didn't kill Luca.”
“Twenty-five.”
“My father forged it.”
I looked at Damian.
Damian's expression didn't change.
“Prove it.”
“I can.”
“How?”
“I have the original ledger.”
Damian went silent.
Ethan continued.
“My father kept two sets. The basement copies were insurance. The originals are somewhere else.”
“Where?”
“With me.”
Marcus managed to release the door.
It opened.
Damian headed upstairs.
I followed.
Outside, Ethan stood near the fountain.
Alone.
His suit was wrinkled. Blood marked one corner of his mouth.
I ran toward him.
“What happened?”
“Father.”
Damian stopped several feet away.
“Ledger.”
Ethan looked at me.
“I'm sorry.”
“For what?”
“For all of it.”
He handed Damian a small encrypted drive.
“That isn't a ledger.”
“Everything's scanned.”
Damian passed it to Marcus.
“Verify it.”
Ethan looked at my ankle.
He knew.
Of course he knew.
“You told him.”
“No.”
“He saw.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
“I should've stopped Father.”
“Yes.”
My answer surprised him.
For years, I had protected Ethan inside my own memories because he had opened one cellar door when we were teenagers.
But one act of kindness didn't erase years of silence.
“You promised you'd get me out.”
“I tried.”
“No. You survived.”
His face collapsed.
“I was scared.”
“So was I.”
“I know.”
“No, Ethan. You watched.”
Damian said nothing.
This was between us.
Ethan wiped blood from his mouth.
“Father made me sign things. When I refused, he threatened you.”
I stared at him.
“What?”
“He knew I cared about you more than anything else.”
Damian stepped closer.
“Then why are Elena's signatures on the transfers?”
Ethan looked sick.
“Because Father needed someone disposable.”
The word landed like a slap.
“Disposable?”
“He built accounts in your name. If investigators ever connected the money to Luca, he planned to give them you.”
Damian's face darkened.
My knees almost failed.
My father hadn't merely hurt me.
He had built my entire adult life into an escape route for himself.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“I thought I could fix it.”
“When?”
“I've been collecting evidence for three years.”
Damian laughed once without humor.
“Three years while she remained in that house?”
Ethan looked at him.
“You think you're better? You married her because you believed the lie.”
That hit.
Damian didn't deny it.
Marcus returned from the car carrying a laptop.
“The files are real.”
Damian turned.
“And Luca?”
“There are payment records, communications, surveillance reports.”
“Who ordered the hit?”
Marcus hesitated.
“Not Charles Mercer.”
Damian stared at him.
“Who?”
“There isn't a name. Just initials.”
“What initials?”
“R.V.”
Damian's expression changed.
I saw recognition.
“Who is R.V.?”
He didn't answer.
Ethan did.
“Roman Voss.”
Damian's uncle.
For the first time, I saw genuine shock break through Damian's control.
Roman had raised Damian and Luca after their parents died.
He had taught Damian the business.
He had stood beside him at Luca's funeral.
And for eleven years, he had encouraged Damian's hatred of my family.
“That's impossible,” Damian said.
Ethan shook his head.
“My father discovered Roman was stealing from both organizations. Luca discovered it too.”
“So Roman killed Luca.”
“Yes.”
“And Charles knew?”
“He helped cover it up.”
“Why?”
“Because Roman had evidence against him.”
Damian turned away.
Everything he'd built his revenge around had collapsed in minutes.
I understood that feeling.
I was living it too.
Ethan continued.
“Father eventually started blackmailing Roman. That's why this marriage terrified both of them.”
“Why?” I asked.
“Because if you and Damian ever compared what each family knew, the truth might come out.”
A vehicle approached beyond the gates.
Marcus immediately reached for his radio.
“Expected?”
“No,” Damian said.
A black sedan stopped.
The rear door opened.
My father stepped out.
Charles Mercer looked immaculate.
No fear.
No hurry.
He walked toward us as if arriving late for dinner.
“Ethan,” he said.
My brother stiffened.
Father looked at me next.
His eyes dropped to my wedding ring.
Then to Damian.
“What a touching reunion.”
Damian stepped between us.
Father smiled.
“You finally showed him your scars, Elena?”
My stomach twisted.
Damian's voice became dangerously quiet.
“You don't speak to her.”
Father raised an eyebrow.
“Already protective? How inconvenient.”
“You forged her signature.”
“Did I?”
“You used her.”
Father smiled.
“So did you.”
Damian had no answer.
Father turned to me.
“Come home.”
“No.”
His expression changed.
Just slightly.
But I knew that look.
“You've embarrassed this family enough.”
Damian moved closer.
“She said no.”
Father ignored him.
“Elena.”
I didn't move.
For the first time in my life, my father couldn't reach me.
“You don't own me anymore.”
Something flickered in his eyes.
Then he smiled.
“That's what your mother said.”
My breath stopped.
“What?”
Father reached inside his coat.
Marcus reacted instantly.
But Father withdrew only an envelope.
He tossed it onto the marble.
A photograph slid out.
My mother.
Alive.
The date printed beneath it was three months after the day I had been told she died.
I stared at it.
Father turned toward his car.
“Ask Rosa why she lied about your mother's funeral.”
He climbed inside.
The sedan disappeared through the gates.
I picked up the photograph with shaking fingers.

On the back, my mother's handwriting formed six words.
ELENA, IF YOU FIND THIS, RUN.
