Chapter 7 - The Ledger Beneath the Floor

Adrian had not entered Crowe House in eleven years.

Harper stood beside him as he unlocked the study.

“Your mother knew this place,” he said.

“My mother is dead.”

“You saw her.”

“I saw someone who looked like her.”

“You called her Mom.”

Harper didn't answer.

The key opened Alexander's desk.

Inside was nothing.

Then Harper noticed scratches beneath it.

They turned the desk over.

A compartment opened.

Alexander Crowe's ledger fell out.

Adrian stared.

The book from the thrift-store photograph had somehow returned home.

Harper opened it.

Hundreds of transactions.

Victor's network.

Officials.

Dock supervisors.

Police.

Then one recurring code:

H.L.

Harper went cold.

“My initials.”

Adrian turned pages.

H.L. PROTECTION.

H.L. EDUCATION.

H.L. RELOCATION.

Alexander had secretly financed Harper's childhood after Daniel died.

“He protected me?”

Adrian nodded.

“Why?”

A letter answered.

Daniel,

If we fail, I will protect Harper as my own. Adrian knows nothing about our plan. Keep it that way. Victor has compromised Charles Barrett and half the port authority. We expose them tomorrow.

Alexander.

Cole read it twice.

“My father wasn't the traitor.”

“No,” Harper said. “He was compromised.”

A floorboard creaked upstairs.

Adrian drew his gun.

“Stay here.”

Harper ignored him.

They climbed together.

A bedroom door stood open.

Inside sat Harper's mother.

Alive.

Harper couldn't move.

“Mom?”

Elaine Lane began crying.

Harper crossed the room and slapped her.

Then hugged her.

Both women collapsed into tears.

Elaine explained.

Her death had been staged after Victor found her.

Graham Voss had helped hide her.

For three years she had watched Harper from a distance.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because Victor wanted the page.”

Harper pulled away.

“You let me bury you.”

“I kept you alive.”

“You broke me.”

Elaine had no defense.

Adrian understood too well.

Protection could become another form of cruelty.

“Who killed Daniel?” Harper asked.

Elaine looked toward Adrian.

“Victor ordered it.”

“And Alexander?”

“Same night.”

Adrian's face emptied.

“Who pulled the trigger?”

Elaine hesitated.

Then footsteps sounded downstairs.

Cole checked his weapon.

Adrian moved toward the landing.

The front door opened.

A man entered.

Older.

Scarred.

Alive.

Cole stared over the railing.

His gun slipped slightly in his hand.

“Dad?”

May you like

Charles Barrett looked up at his son.

Then raised his weapon directly at Adrian.
