Chapter 12 - The War Inside the Tower

Harper looked at Adrian.

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

Cole produced a photocopy recovered from Charles.

Daniel had written:

ADRIAN C. — SUCCESSOR / UNAWARE / PROTECT AT ALL COSTS.

Harper exhaled.

Adrian read it twice.

Daniel had not accused him.

He had protected him.

Below it was another line.

IF ALEXANDER AND I FAIL, ADRIAN IS THE ONLY ONE WHO CAN END THIS.

Adrian closed his eyes.

For nineteen years he had believed his father died because weakness had entered their house.

Now he understood Alexander had died trying to dismantle the darkest part of his own empire.

Adrian had inherited the machine without knowing its deepest purpose.

Harper squeezed his hand.

“You can finish it.”

“Finish what?”

“What they started.”

That meant destroying much of the Crowe organization.

Money.

Power.

Protection.

Everything Adrian had spent his life maintaining.

He looked at Harper.

“You understand what that costs?”

“Yes.”

“You could lose everything.”

“No.”

She leaned closer.

“You could lose the things that should've been gone years ago.”

Within forty-eight hours, Adrian began turning over records.

Shell companies.

Bribery accounts.

Smuggling routes.

Officials.

He negotiated through attorneys.

Legitimate Crowe Meridian operations would survive.

The criminal organization would not.

Men who once called him boss called him traitor.

Threats arrived hourly.

Harper stayed.

One evening, she found him alone inside the private elevator.

“You're brooding.”

“Thinking.”

“Rich-person brooding.”

He looked at her coffee.

“Still drinking that?”

“It builds character.”

“It smells like burned tires.”

“Exactly.”

He took the cup and drank.

His face changed.

Harper burst out laughing.

Adrian stared at her.

Then laughed too.

Cole, standing outside, looked genuinely alarmed.

The moment ended when Adrian's phone rang.

Charles.

Adrian answered.

“Victor escaped.”

Everything changed.

“How?”

“Transport ambush.”

“Where is he?”

“We don't know.”

Harper heard.

Adrian immediately turned toward her.

“No.”

She folded her arms.

“I haven't said anything.”

“I know what you're about to say.”

“That's concerning.”

“You're going somewhere secure.”

Harper's phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

A photograph appeared.

Her apartment.

Taken from inside.

Then another.

Her childhood photograph lay on the table.

A message followed.

COME HOME, DAUGHTER.

Harper looked at Adrian.

A second message arrived before either could speak.
