Chapter 6 - Isabella’s Last Secret

For one impossible second, Alessandro was twenty-one again.

Then thirty-two.

Then a child standing beside his mother in a dark hallway.

The woman outside looked like Isabella.

Same cheekbones.

Same posture.

Same silver streak through dark hair.

But Alessandro knew something was wrong.

“She’s not my mother.”

Sofia stared.

“How can you say that?”

“Because my mother broke her left wrist when I was twelve.”

Sofia looked confused.

“It never healed perfectly. Her hand turned inward.”

The woman below lifted both hands while speaking to Peter Vale.

Perfect alignment.

Anthony whispered, “Lucia.”

Alessandro looked at him.

“Who?”

“Isabella’s sister.”

“My mother didn’t have a sister.”

“Yes, she did.”

Anthony’s voice carried the exhaustion of a man whose entire life had become hidden doors.

“Twin sister.”

Alessandro stared at him.

“No.”

“Lucia left New York before you were born.”

“Why?”

“Because she hated Matteo.”

That made sense too easily.

Alessandro hated how many impossible truths now made sense.

The front door downstairs opened.

Marco’s voice came through the earpiece.

“They have warrants.”

“Real?”

“Looks real.”

Alessandro looked at the ledger.

Peter Vale had brought law enforcement.

Or people dressed like law enforcement.

Either way, gunfire would destroy everything.

“Hide the ledger.”

Bianca shook her head.

“No.”

He looked at her.

“Give it to me.”

“Why?”

“Because everyone expects you to have it.”

She was right.

Victor expected Alessandro to possess the evidence.

Vale expected Alessandro.

Anthony.

Sofia.

No one expected Bianca to carry the document that could destroy her biological father.

She slid the ledger inside her coat.

Footsteps climbed the stairs.

Peter Vale entered first.

Two federal agents followed.

Then Lucia.

Up close, the resemblance to Isabella was astonishing.

Alessandro felt sick.

Lucia looked at him.

“You have Matteo’s eyes.”

“I’ve heard that before.”

“I’m sorry.”

“People keep saying that tonight.”

Vale stepped forward.

“Alessandro, we’re here under federal authority to seize evidence relating to organized crime.”

Alessandro smiled faintly.

“You brought my aunt to execute a search warrant?”

Lucia looked surprised.

Anthony stared at him.

“How did you—”

“You said her name.”

Vale’s composure slipped.

Only slightly.

Enough.

Alessandro continued.

“And if she’s here, this isn’t about evidence. It’s about leverage.”

One of the agents frowned.

Vale said, “Everything in this house must be surrendered.”

“Show me the warrant.”

The agent handed it over.

Alessandro read it.

Legal.

Narrow.

The warrant permitted seizure of documents belonging to Matteo Ferraro stored in the residence.

It did not mention Isabella’s personal property.

Alessandro handed it back.

“Search.”

Vale stared.

“That easy?”

“I have nothing to hide.”

That was not true.

But the best lies usually contained enough truth to stand upright.

Agents began searching.

Lucia watched Alessandro.

“You look like her.”

“So do you.”

Pain crossed her face.

“She loved you more than anything.”

“Where were you when she died?”

“In Italy.”

“Why?”

“She asked me not to come.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“Another dead person making everyone promise things.”

Lucia almost smiled.

“She said you hated secrets.”

“She was right.”

“Then you should watch the tape.”

Alessandro looked toward the hidden compartment.

Vale heard.

“What tape?”

Lucia ignored him.

“The one Isabella left.”

Vale stepped closer.

“Where is it?”

Alessandro understood instantly.

Vale did not know.

Good.

“The warrant allows documents.”

He removed the videotape.

“This isn’t a document.”

Vale’s face darkened.

The federal agent looked uncomfortable.

Technically, Alessandro was right.

Vale said, “Don’t be difficult.”

“You poisoned my mother.”

The room froze.

Vale’s face remained calm.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Grant confessed.”

That changed him.

Only for half a second.

But Alessandro saw it.

Anthony saw it too.

Lucia whispered, “Peter?”

Vale looked at her.

“You believe him?”

Alessandro said, “Grant gave your name.”

Lucia backed away from Vale.

“What did you do?”

Vale’s hand slipped inside his coat.

Marco moved.

So did the agents.

“Hands!” one agent shouted.

Vale stopped.

Alessandro watched him.

“This wasn’t Victor.”

Vale laughed softly.

“No.”

“Why Isabella?”

“Because she ruined everything.”

“What?”

“Your mother believed she could cleanse the Ferraro name.”

Vale’s expression twisted.

“She started collecting evidence. Cooperating quietly with investigators. Moving money away from criminal operations. She wanted to dismantle what your father built.”

Alessandro looked at Lucia.

She was crying.

Vale continued.

“She would have destroyed dozens of families.”

“No,” Alessandro said. “She would have destroyed criminals.”

Vale smiled.

“In our world, what’s the difference?”

Alessandro understood then.

Vale had not killed Isabella for Victor.

He had killed her to preserve the system itself.

The network.

The money.

The people who depended on the old Ferraro structure remaining dirty.

“And Bianca?”

Vale shrugged.

“Useful.”

Bianca’s expression hardened.

“For what?”

“Getting close to him.”

Alessandro stepped forward.

“You manipulated her?”

Vale laughed.

“Victor did. I simply benefited.”

The federal agents moved toward Vale.

He drew his weapon.

Everything happened quickly.

Marco tackled Bianca down.

Anthony shoved Sofia behind the wall.

An agent fired.

Vale fired back.

The shot struck plaster.

Lucia screamed.

Then Vale ran.

Not toward the stairs.

Toward the window.

He crashed through the old glass onto the fire escape.

Marco pursued.

Alessandro followed.

Vale climbed down two levels, jumped onto an adjacent roof, and disappeared between buildings.

The federal agents called for backup.

Ten minutes later, Vale was gone.

But he had made a mistake.

He left his phone behind.

Alessandro found it beneath the broken window.

Locked.

Bianca looked over his shoulder.

“Can Marco open it?”

“Eventually.”

Lucia approached.

“There may be another way.”

She entered Isabella’s old bedroom and opened an antique sewing box.

Inside was a photograph of Peter Vale.

On the back:

PETER — IF HE BETRAYS ME, 04281983.

“Password?” Bianca asked.

Alessandro entered 04281983.

The phone unlocked.

Messages appeared.

One thread with Victor Rinaldi.

One with Grant.

And one saved under the name BRIDE.

Alessandro stared.

Bianca slowly shook her head.

“That isn’t me.”

He opened it.

Hundreds of messages.

Wedding schedules.

Guest lists.

Security maps.

Details of Alessandro and Bianca’s ceremony.

The most recent message had been sent seven minutes earlier.

Everything failed. Use the backup plan.

Alessandro looked at the reply.

Already moving.

Then another message arrived.

A photograph.

St. Patrick’s Cathedral.

Empty except for one woman standing beside the altar.

She wore Bianca’s wedding dress.

Her face was hidden beneath the veil.

Underneath the photograph were six words:

BRING BIANCA OR THE CHURCH BURNS.
