Chapter 11 - The Secret Hidden in My Name

The door opened.
Everyone looked toward the entrance.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
Because the person standing there was the last person anyone expected to see.
Isabella.
Alive.
Again.
But this time she was not on a screen.
She was standing in front of us.
Wearing a dark coat.
Her face was tired.
Her eyes were full of pain.
Cassian stared at her.
For several seconds, he looked like he forgot how to breathe.
Then his expression changed.
Anger.
Betrayal.
Relief.
Everything at once.
"Isabella."
Her name came out like a question.
She looked at him.
"I'm sorry."
That was the first thing she said.
Not an explanation.
Not an excuse.
Just an apology.
Cassian walked toward her.
"Do you have any idea what you did?"
Isabella nodded.
"Yes."
"You let me believe you betrayed me."
"I know."
"You let me think you were gone."
"I know."
His voice became louder.
"Then why?"
Isabella looked down.
"Because if I told you the truth, you would have done exactly what Adrian wanted."
Cassian stopped.
Adrian stood nearby.
Watching.
Smiling.
"See?"
Adrian looked at Cassian.
"She always knew how to control you."
Cassian turned toward him.
"Shut up."
Adrian laughed.
"Still angry."
Cassian stepped forward.
But Isabella stopped him.
"No."
Everyone looked at her.
She shook her head.
"This is what he wants."
Adrian smiled.
"Finally."
He looked at her.
"You understand."
Isabella ignored him.
She looked at Cassian.
"The man you are fighting is not the one who started this."
Cassian frowned.
"Then who?"
Isabella looked at me.
My heart dropped.
Because I already knew.
The answer was connected to me.
She walked closer.
"Elena."
I felt my body become still.
"Your father didn't hide the evidence inside your bracelet."
I touched it.
"Then what did he hide?"
She looked at me.
"The truth about who you really are."
Nobody spoke.
Adrian watched carefully.
Cassian stepped between us.
"Explain."
Isabella took a breath.
"Before your parents died, they discovered someone was changing the structure of both families."
Thomas frowned.
"Both families?"
Isabella nodded.
"The Renzi family and the Moretti family."
I looked at her.
"Why?"
"Because both families controlled something bigger than money."
"What?"
She looked at the walls around us.
"This mansion."
I frowned.
"What?"
She continued.
"Your fathers didn't build an empire."
She looked at Cassian.
"They built a system."
Cassian's expression changed.
"A system for what?"
"Protection."
A pause.
"Until someone turned it into control."
Adrian smiled.
"You make yourself sound innocent."
Isabella looked at him.
"You are the reason everything collapsed."
Adrian laughed.
"Am I?"
He looked at me.
"Tell her."
I looked at him.
"Tell me what?"
Adrian stepped closer.
"Ask your mother why she disappeared."
I looked at Marina.
My mother.
She had been silent.
Too silent.
I turned.
"Mom?"
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I wanted to tell you."
"Then tell me now."
She looked at Cassian.
Then Isabella.
Then me.
"The night your parents died..."
She stopped.
Her voice broke.
"I was supposed to be there."
The room went silent.
"What?"
My mother closed her eyes.
"I was supposed to meet them."
"Why?"
"Because your father found something."
I waited.
"He found out someone was using your identity."
My stomach tightened.
"My identity?"
She nodded.
"Someone was trying to make you disappear before you were even born."
I felt dizzy.
"Why?"
My mother looked at my bracelet.
"Because your birth connected two families."
Cassian looked confused.
"Elena's birth?"
Isabella nodded.
"Your father and hers discovered the same thing."
"What?"
She looked at both of us.
"That the original Renzi and Moretti agreement was not about power."
A pause.
"It was about protecting the person who would inherit it."
My eyes widened.
"Me?"
Nobody answered.
That was the answer.
I stepped back.
"No."
I shook my head.
"No, that doesn't make sense."
My entire life.
A maid.
An ordinary woman.
Someone nobody noticed.
How could I be connected to all of this?
Cassian looked at me.
Not with suspicion.
With understanding.
Because maybe he had been asking the same question about himself.
Adrian walked toward the center of the room.
"You want the truth?"
Nobody moved.
"Fine."
He pulled something from his pocket.
A small black card.
He threw it onto the table.
"That is the real evidence."
Cassian looked at it.
"What is it?"
Adrian smiled.
"The record your fathers died protecting."
Thomas moved forward.
"No."
Adrian looked at him.
"You knew."
Thomas stopped.
"You knew everything."
Thomas said nothing.
Cassian looked at him.
"Thomas."
The older man lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
The betrayal hurt more than anger.
Cassian stared.
"How many people lied to me?"
Nobody answered.
Adrian smiled.
"Everyone."
He looked at me.
"Except me."
I almost laughed.
"You killed people."
His expression didn't change.
"I did what was necessary."
"That's what everyone says."
For the first time, Adrian looked annoyed.
"You still don't understand."
"Then explain."
He looked at my bracelet.
"Your father didn't choose you because you were powerful."
A pause.
"He chose you because you were the only person nobody would suspect."
The words hurt.
Because they were true.
I had spent my whole life invisible.
And maybe that was exactly why I survived.
Isabella walked toward the table.
She picked up the black card.
"Don't."
Adrian's voice changed.
A warning.
But Isabella didn't stop.
She inserted the card into the hidden computer.
The screen turned on.
A single file appeared.
No name.
No date.
Only one word.
"ELENA."
Everyone looked at the screen.
Isabella opened it.
A video began.
My father appeared.
But this time...
he wasn't alone.
A young Cassian stood beside him.
And beside them...
was me.
A little girl.
Holding Cassian's hand.
I covered my mouth.
Because I remembered.
A memory.
Not a dream.
Not a feeling.
A real memory.
My father looked into the camera.
"If you're seeing this, then the truth has finally returned."
The younger Cassian in the video looked afraid.
My father continued:
"Elena is not the key."
A pause.
"She is the proof."
The video shook.
Someone entered the room.
My father's expression changed.
Fear.
Then he whispered:
"No."
The camera turned.
Showing the person who had entered.
Everyone in the room froze.
Because the person standing in the video...
was not Adrian.
Was not Isabella.
Was not anyone we expected.
It was Cassian himself.
The younger Cassian.
Holding a gun.
May you like
And my father looked at him and said:
"You finally remembered."
