Chapter 14 - Elias Baron’s Final Debt

The address led to a nursing facility in Vermont.

Adeline barely spoke during the drive.

Evan sat beside her.

Elias drove.

No security convoy.

No armored vehicles.

Just the three of them.

The facility administrator met them privately.

Daniel Hayes had indeed arrived there three years earlier.

Not conscious.

Not under his own name.

Isabella’s injection had not killed him.

Arthur’s men moved him afterward, intending to interrogate him when he recovered.

But Daniel suffered cardiac arrest during transport.

He was revived.

Severe brain injury followed.

A sympathetic doctor changed his identity and transferred him.

For three years, Daniel had lived under the name David Hale.

Adeline gripped Elias’s hand without realizing it.

“Is he alive?”

The administrator nodded.

Evan began crying.

They entered the room.

An older man sat beside a window.

Thinner.

Gray-haired.

Changed.

But Adeline knew him.

“Dad?”

Daniel turned.

His eyes moved slowly toward her.

For one terrible second, nothing happened.

Then his fingers trembled.

“Addie?”

She collapsed against him.

Evan joined them.

Elias remained by the door.

This moment did not belong to him.

Daniel’s memory was damaged.

Some days were clearer than others.

But he remembered his children.

He remembered Elias.

When Elias finally approached, Daniel looked at him.

“You lived.”

Elias swallowed.

“Because of you.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“Good.”

Elias had rehearsed speeches for three years without knowing it.

Apologies.

Promises.

Debts.

None mattered.

He managed only, “Thank you.”

Daniel squeezed his hand.

“That’s enough.”

It was the simplest absolution Elias had ever received.

But one mystery remained.

Who sent the photograph?

The administrator handed them another envelope.

Daniel himself had arranged it months earlier during a period of unusual clarity.

He had remembered Adeline’s old address.

A volunteer helped him contact a private investigator.

The investigator eventually discovered everything happening in Boston.

Daniel had been trying to find his children.

On the drive home, Adeline slept against the window.

Evan slept in the back.

Elias looked at them.

Three years earlier, Daniel had pulled him from a burning car.

Now Daniel’s daughter had pulled him from something slower.

A life built around suspicion.

Control.

Debt.

Fear.

Adeline woke.

“You’re staring.”

“Road.”

“You were staring.”

“I was thinking.”

“Dangerous.”

He smiled.

Then his phone rang.

Bruno.

Elias answered.

Bruno said nothing for several seconds.

“What?”

“Someone entered Baron House.”

“Who?”

“No forced entry.”

Elias’s smile disappeared.

Bruno continued.

“They used Sebastian’s old access code.”

“That code was erased.”

“I know.”

“Who is inside?”

Bruno looked at the security feed.

May you like

Then whispered a name Elias had never expected to hear again.

And the front door opened.
