Chapter 13 - The Man Behind the Three-Year Lie

Adeline heard Isabella’s confession in silence.

Daniel had been dying.

But not immediately.

Arthur’s men were coming.

Daniel knew torture would follow.

He begged Isabella to protect his children and destroy what remained in his IV line.

She injected a sedative.

Too much.

Whether it shortened his life by minutes or hours, no doctor could now say.

Adeline walked out.

Elias followed.

“Adeline.”

“Don’t.”

He stopped.

She needed anger.

Then grief.

Then space.

For two days she did not speak to Isabella.

Elias did not pressure her.

On the third day, Isabella came to the apartment alone.

She stood outside 4C.

“I won’t ask forgiveness.”

Adeline looked at her.

“Good.”

“I promised your father I would protect you.”

“You did a terrible job.”

“Yes.”

That honesty cracked something.

Isabella gave her Daniel’s final letter.

Adeline read it alone.

Her father had known he might die.

He told her not to turn grief into a life sentence.

He told her to take care of Evan.

But not to make Evan her entire future.

And one sentence destroyed her defenses.

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO WANT SOMETHING FOR YOURSELF.

Adeline cried until she had nothing left.

Weeks passed.

Evan improved.

Arthur, Haverin and Rourke were formally charged in multiple cases.

Rourke survived.

Elias visited him once.

Rourke asked, “Do you hate me?”

Elias answered, “I don’t know you well enough.”

Then he left.

It was the last time he saw him outside a courtroom.

Baron House changed.

The armed meetings stopped.

The basement records rooms were emptied.

Elias began converting several properties into legitimate companies with transparent ownership.

He established a medical assistance fund.

He named it after Daniel Hayes.

Adeline was furious when she discovered it.

“You should have asked.”

“I knew you’d say no.”

“That is not an argument in your favor.”

“I’m learning.”

“You’re learning slowly.”

“Very.”

She tried not to smile.

Failed.

Their relationship changed quietly.

No dramatic declaration.

No instant romance.

Coffee.

Arguments.

Evan teasing them.

Elias occasionally appearing at 4C with groceries far too expensive for anyone living there.

Adeline sending half of them back.

One evening he arrived with bread.

Only bread.

She stared at it.

“That’s it?”

“I was told my groceries were offensive.”

“Your strawberries cost fourteen dollars.”

“They were excellent strawberries.”

“They were ridiculous strawberries.”

He held up the bread.

“This acceptable?”

She took it.

“Barely.”

Then someone knocked.

Evan opened the door.

A courier stood outside.

He handed Adeline an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph.

Daniel.

Alive.

Timestamped two days after his official death.

Adeline stopped breathing.

On the back were four words.

YOUR FATHER SURVIVED ST. VINCENT’S.

Beneath them was an address.

And tomorrow’s date.
