Chapter 7 - The Bride Who Chose Him

The gunshot from the chapel echoed through Madeline's phone.
"Sophia!" Clara shouted.
The live video shook.
For one terrible second, nobody could see what had happened.
Then Sophia appeared again.
She was alive.
The bullet had struck the wooden altar beside her.
Elena stood behind her with a pistol.
"Come alone," Elena said into the camera. "Bring Clara and Daniel's book. Or the next bullet won't miss."
The feed ended.
Silence filled the safe room.
Adrian stared at the black screen.
Then at the woman he'd trusted almost his entire life.
Or rather, the image of her frozen in his memory.
Clara remembered Elena welcoming her into the estate.
Warning her to think before speaking.
Standing beside her when the photograph appeared.
Helping arrange the sudden wedding.
It had been Elena who first presented Clara's name to Adrian.
"She chose me," Clara whispered.
Daniel nodded.
"Yes."
Adrian looked at him.
"You knew?"
"I suspected."
"Why didn't you tell us?"
"Because suspicion wasn't enough. Elena had access to everything. Your lawyers. Security schedules. Marriage candidates. Blackridge accounts. If I'd revealed myself too early, she would have destroyed the records."
Adrian's face hardened.
"And Sophia?"
"She found Elena's name in the accounts."
Madeline understood.
"That's why Sophia disappeared."
Daniel nodded.
"She survived the crash. I helped hide her."
Clara looked at him.
"And Madeline?"
"Sophia contacted her after Madeline discovered the same pattern."
Everything finally connected.
Bride one hadn't died.
Bride three hadn't abandoned Adrian.
They had both discovered Elena.
"And Rachel?" Clara asked.
"She really did leave," Daniel said. "Sophia warned her before Blackridge could involve her any further. Rachel changed her name and built another life. She's safe."
Clara exhaled.
One mystery closed.
Then Adrian looked at Gabriel.
"My father."
Isabella stepped between them.
"Gabriel is your biological father."
Adrian didn't move.
Isabella continued before he could ask.
"My marriage to Vittorio Vale had already become violent. Gabriel helped me survive it. We made one mistake."
Gabriel looked down.
"Adrian."
"Don't."
Adrian's voice wasn't angry now.
It was wounded.
Gabriel obeyed.
Isabella said, "Vittorio believed you were his son. I never corrected him because I knew what he would do if he discovered the truth."
"And Luca?"
"Vittorio's biological son."
Adrian closed his eyes.
Clara took his hand.
He held hers.
"What happened between you and Gabriel?" he asked.
"I disappeared to protect both you and Luca. Gabriel stayed away because Vittorio threatened you too."
Gabriel finally spoke.
"I watched from a distance. It wasn't enough. I know that."
Adrian looked at him.
Fourteen years couldn't be repaired in one conversation.
Clara understood that.
So did Adrian.
But this was no longer the moment for it.
Sophia was waiting.
Adrian looked at Marco.
"Get everyone we trust."
Daniel shook his head.
"Elena controls too much of your security."
"Then we don't use my security."
He looked at Gabriel.
"You spent fourteen years hiding from the Vale organization?"
"Successfully."
"Then show me what you learned."
For the first time, something passed between father and son that wasn't anger.
Understanding.
They left twenty minutes later.
Not for the mansion.
For the chapel.
Daniel knew an old service road through the mountain woods.
They parked half a mile away.
Clara reached for the door.
Adrian stopped her.
"No."
She stared at him.
"Do not start."
"Elena specifically asked for you."
"Exactly."
"Which makes you bait."
"Which makes me necessary."
"Clara."
She placed both hands against his enormous chest.
"Listen to me."
He did.
"You've spent your whole life deciding that protecting people means pushing them away."
His jaw tightened.
"Sometimes it does."
"Not tonight."
"She could kill you."
"She could kill Sophia if I don't go."
Adrian looked away.
Clara touched his face.
"Trust me."
His eyes returned to hers.
That was harder for him than facing armed men.
She knew it.
Finally he nodded.
"But you stay beside me."
"Deal."
"And if I tell you to run—"
"I'll strongly consider it."
"Clara."
"Fine."
Daniel handed her the recipe book.
The original Blackridge records weren't actually inside the chapel.
That had been Daniel's final protection.
The iron box beneath the altar contained an encrypted drive.
But the key to decrypt it had been hidden inside the recipe book.
Neither was useful alone.
Elena needed both.
They approached the chapel.
The doors stood open.
Sophia sat near the altar.
Her hands were tied.
Elena stood behind her.
The gun remained pointed at Sophia.
"You came."
Adrian stepped inside first.
Clara followed.
Daniel remained hidden outside with Gabriel and Marco.
Elena smiled sadly.
"I hoped you'd understand."
Adrian's expression didn't change.
"You tried to kill me."
"I tried to save what your family built."
"You turned women into pieces on a board."
"Nobody was supposed to die."
"Luca died."
The smile disappeared.
Sophia spoke.
"Tell him."
Elena pressed the gun closer.
"Quiet."
Sophia didn't stop.
"Tell him who ordered Luca's car sabotaged."
Adrian went still.
Elena's silence answered.
"You?"
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."
Adrian took one step forward.
Elena raised the weapon.
"Stop."
He stopped.
Clara could see his hands shaking.
"You killed my brother."
"I needed Sophia gone. Luca wasn't supposed to be driving."
"You killed him."
Elena's voice cracked.
"I was protecting us!"
"From what?"
"From losing everything!"
Her composure finally broke.
"Vittorio left chaos behind. Blackridge was collapsing. Families were turning against us. Money was disappearing. I rebuilt it."
"By laundering money."
"By controlling people."
"By murdering Luca."
Elena's eyes filled with tears.
"That was a mistake."
Adrian looked at her with something colder than hatred.
"Luca wasn't a mistake."
Elena flinched.
Clara quietly moved toward Sophia.
Elena noticed.
"Don't."
Clara stopped.
"You wanted me here."
"I want the book."
Clara held it up.
"Let Sophia go."
"Give me the book first."
"No."
Elena laughed bitterly.
"You're negotiating with me?"
"I negotiate cake flavors with Mafia bosses. You're not that intimidating."
Sophia almost laughed despite the gun.
Adrian closed his eyes briefly.
Even now.
Clara was still Clara.
Elena extended her hand.
"The book."
Clara opened it.
"You know what my father taught me about recipes?"
"I don't care."
"You should."
She tore several pages free.
Elena's face changed.
"No!"
Clara held them toward a candle burning beside the altar.
"Drop the gun."
"You wouldn't."
"You're right."
Clara moved the pages closer to the flame.
"I'm a baker. Destroying recipes feels immoral."
The edge began to brown.
"But I'll recover."
Elena panicked.
Her weapon shifted away from Sophia.
That was enough.
Sophia dropped sideways.
Adrian lunged.
Elena fired.
The bullet struck the stone wall.
Adrian hit her before she could fire again.
The weapon skidded across the chapel floor.
Marco burst through the side entrance.
Gabriel followed.
Daniel ran to Clara.
Within seconds, Elena was disarmed.
Sophia's restraints were cut.
Nobody had been shot.
Clara looked at the pages in her hand.
"That went surprisingly well."
Adrian turned toward her.
His face was furious.
"What?"
"You held paper over an open flame while someone pointed a gun at you."
"It worked."
He crossed the distance between them.
"I am going to spend the rest of my life developing high blood pressure because of you."
Clara smiled.
"The rest of your life?"
Adrian realized what he'd said.
For once, the terrifying Adrian Vale looked completely defenseless.
Clara's smile softened.
"We should probably discuss that later."
"Definitely."
Police arrived soon afterward.
Not officers connected to Blackridge.
Daniel had spent years gathering evidence for a federal investigation.
The drive beneath the chapel altar completed it.
The records exposed everything.
Accounts.
Bribes.
Threats.
Shell companies.
Payments authorized by Elena.
The order that led to Luca's death.
Evidence proving Sophia had been framed.
Evidence proving Madeline had been hunted after discovering the accounts.
And proof that Elena had manipulated Clara's father's debt to force her into Adrian's orbit.
Thomas Grayson survived and agreed to testify.
Rachel Monroe was contacted through federal investigators and confirmed Sophia had warned her to disappear before Blackridge could use her.
Sophia was finally able to return home.
Madeline received protection until the criminal cases were complete.
Gabriel surrendered everything he knew about Vittorio Vale's old organization in exchange for consideration from prosecutors.
Isabella stopped running.
Daniel did too.
For Clara, forgiveness took longer.
She loved her father.
She was furious with him.
Both could be true.
"You should have trusted me," she told him weeks later.
"I know."
"You watched me nearly lose the bakery."
"I know."
"I lived on instant noodles for four months."
Daniel winced.
"That might be the part I'm most ashamed of."
Clara tried not to smile.
She failed.
Then she hugged him.
Adrian's healing was quieter.
He visited Luca's grave with Isabella.
Then with Gabriel.
He didn't suddenly call Gabriel Dad.
Nobody expected him to.
But he listened.
Sometimes a beginning didn't need to be dramatic.
Sometimes it was simply choosing not to walk away.
Three months after Elena's arrest, Clara stood inside Bennett's Bread & Butter at four in the morning.
The ovens hummed.
Flour covered her cheek.
Someone knocked.
She knew who it was.
Adrian had to duck slightly beneath the old doorway.
His expensive black coat looked absurd beside sacks of flour.
"You're early."
"You said four."
"I meant normal-person four."
"This is four."
Clara smiled.
The bakery had been restored.
Not with Blackridge money.
Not through their marriage contract.
The stolen funds connected to her father's business had been recovered, and Clara had refused Adrian's offer to pay for everything else.
She had accepted one thing.
A new oven.
Mostly because Adrian had bought the wrong commercial model and couldn't return it.
At least, that was what he claimed.
Clara suspected otherwise.
He approached the counter.
She placed a cinnamon roll in front of him.
"First batch."
"Is it burned?"
She stared.
"How dare you."
He took a bite.
Then another.
"Acceptable."
Clara threw flour at him.
It landed across his black shirt.
Adrian looked down.
Clara froze.
She remembered their first meeting.
Her hands clutching that expensive shirt.
Her certainty that he'd be furious.
Instead, Adrian smiled.
"You have a habit of ruining my clothes."
"You have too many black shirts."
He walked around the counter.
Clara backed away.
"Adrian."
He continued.
"Don't."
He caught her around the waist.
She laughed.
"Put me down."
"No."
"You know this technically qualifies as kidnapping."
"We've discussed this."
He lifted her onto the counter.
Suddenly their faces were almost level.
Almost.
Clara touched his cheek.
"People were idiots."
"What people?"
"The women who rejected you because of your size."
His smile faded slightly.
"Clara—"
"I'm serious."
"They had their reasons."
"So did I."
"For accepting?"
"Yes."
"What?"
She pretended to think.
"The debt."
He raised an eyebrow.
"The bakery."
Another.
"Your charming personality."
"Careful."
Clara laughed.
Then became serious.
"The truth?"
"Please."
"I came because I thought I had no choice."
Adrian waited.
"But I stayed because I realized I did."
His expression changed.
Clara continued.
"I chose you."
He kissed her.
Gentle at first.
Then with three months of things neither of them had been brave enough to say.
When they separated, Adrian rested his forehead against hers.
"The contract expires in nine months."
"I know."
"I've been thinking about that."
"That sounds dangerous."
He reached into his coat.
Clara's heart jumped.
"No."
Adrian froze.
"No?"
"Please tell me you're not proposing beside a tray of cinnamon rolls."
He looked offended.
"I had a plan."
"Of course you did."
"It involved the mountain overlook."
"Very Mafia boss."
"And flowers."
"Predictable."
"And a violinist."
Clara stared.
"You hired a violinist?"
"Two."
She burst out laughing.
Adrian sighed.
"Forget it."
He started putting the ring away.
Clara grabbed his wrist.
"I didn't say no to you."
He stopped.
"I said no to the terrible location."
He looked around the bakery.
"This is better?"
"This is where my life is."
Then she looked at him.
"And you're part of it now."
Adrian slowly opened the ring box.
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
"This time," he said, "there's no debt."
She nodded.
"No arrangement."
Another nod.
"No Blackridge."
"No."
"No one choosing for us."
Clara smiled.
"Just us."
Adrian lowered himself onto one knee.
Even kneeling, he was almost annoyingly tall.
Clara laughed through her tears.
"Clara Bennett, will you marry me because you actually want to?"
She pretended to consider it.
Adrian frowned.
"Clara."
"Yes."
He stared.
"Yes?"
"Yes."
He stood so quickly she squealed.
Then he lifted her from the counter and spun her once around the bakery.
"Careful!"
"You survived falling into me."
"That was different!"
He kissed her again.
Six months later, they married at the restored mountain chapel.
Sophia attended.
So did Madeline.
Thomas arrived without being attacked on the way, which Clara considered significant progress.
Isabella sat in the front row.
Gabriel sat several seats away, close enough to be family but far enough to respect what still needed healing.
Daniel walked Clara down the aisle.
Before giving her hand to Adrian, he whispered, "You're sure?"
Clara looked at the enormous man waiting for her.
The Mafia boss everyone had feared.
The man women had rejected without knowing.
The man who had caught her before she hit the floor.
The man who had never once asked her to become smaller so he could feel bigger.
"I'm sure."
Daniel kissed her forehead.
Adrian took her hand.
Their wedding contract contained no financial clauses.
No escape conditions.
No hidden numbers.
Just a marriage certificate signed by two people who had finally been allowed to choose.
After the ceremony, Clara opened the bakery's enormous wedding cake.
Chocolate.
Raspberry filling.
Exactly as she'd negotiated on the day they met.
Adrian tasted it.
"Acceptable."
Clara shoved frosting onto his nose.
Everyone laughed.
Even Gabriel.
Even Isabella.
Adrian stared at Clara for one threatening second.
Then he pulled her against him and kissed her in front of everyone.
Years later, Clara would still tell people she hadn't fallen in love with Adrian Vale at first sight.
Technically, she had fallen into him.
And Adrian always corrected her.
"I caught you."
That evening, beneath the warm lights of the mountain estate, Clara rested her head against her husband's chest while music drifted through the open doors.
No one was hunting them.
No hidden phones waited inside suitcases.
No missing brides remained unexplained.
Daniel was alive and rebuilding his relationship with his daughter.
Sophia and Madeline had their lives back.
Isabella had returned to her son.
Adrian had begun turning the Vale empire into something Luca would have been proud to inherit.
And Clara still woke before sunrise to bake bread because no amount of money could convince her that four in the morning wasn't the best time to make cinnamon rolls.
Adrian looked down at her.
"Happy?"
Clara smiled.
"Very."
His arms tightened around her.
The man everyone had feared finally had a family that stayed.
And the clumsy baker who had arrived believing she was sacrificing a year of her life had found the one thing no contract could ever guarantee.
May you like
A home she had chosen.
