Chapter 6 - The Woman Who Saved Serena

Pier 19 was a trap.
Everyone knew it.
Serena intended to go anyway.
Dante hated that.
"What happens when Hale takes the capsule and kills all three of you?"
"Then don't let him."
"Excellent plan."
"You have a better one?"
"Several. They all involve you staying behind."
"Rejected."
Antonio watched them argue from the warehouse safe room.
Finally, he said, "She was exactly like this at sixteen."
Dante looked at him.
"Not helping."
Serena crossed her arms.
"I spent twelve years being told, directly or indirectly, that I didn't get to decide what happened to me. I'm done with that."
Dante's anger disappeared.
He nodded once.
"Fine."
"Fine?"
"You go."
She looked suspicious.
"That's it?"
"No. You wear a wire, a tracker, and a vest. Marco positions two teams. Antonio covers the water. I stay close enough to shoot anyone who breathes wrong."
Serena almost smiled.
"Very normal."
"Welcome to my life."
Before leaving, Luca finished untangling another section of her hair.
Serena looked into the mirror.
For the first time, she could see part of herself beneath years of neglect.
Not the polished heiress from the old photographs.
Not Mara under the bridge.
Something in between.
"Cut some," she said.
Luca froze.
"Are you sure?"
"Not all."
"How much?"
Serena lifted one damaged section.
"What's dead."
Luca's voice softened.
"Hair isn't alive."
"You know what I mean."
He did.
He trimmed the ruined ends.
Only inches.
Yet Serena cried.
Not from fear.
From release.
Dante stood near the door and pretended not to watch.
At eleven forty-five, Serena entered Pier 19.
The capsule hung around her neck.
Hale waited under a single industrial light.
Julian and Evelyn remained tied to chairs.
No visible guards.
That meant hidden guards.
"Serena," Hale said.
"You knew I was alive."
"Eventually."
"You paid Avery."
"Yes."
No denial.
That surprised her.
"Why?"
"Because your family built its fortune by crushing men like me and then expected loyalty."
"So you erased a sixteen-year-old girl?"
"You were leverage."
"I was a child."
"You were a key."
Serena felt rage, but Dante's voice came through the tiny earpiece.
Steady.
She remained calm.
"Who helped you?"
Hale smiled.
"Still asking the wrong question."
He looked at Evelyn.
Serena followed his gaze.
Evelyn's face was wet with tears.
"Tell her," Hale said.
Evelyn shook her head.
"Tell her."
Serena stepped closer.
"Aunt Evelyn?"
Evelyn whispered, "I knew about Avery."
Serena's stomach twisted.
"When?"
"After they took you."
"You knew where I was?"
"For a while."
"And you didn't tell Mom?"
"I tried."
"Did you?"
Evelyn broke.
"I was the one who told her."
Serena froze.
"My mother found me because of you?"
"Yes."
"Then why did she die?"
"Because Hale found out."
Hale laughed softly.
"Evelyn always liked making herself the hero."
Evelyn snapped, "You poisoned Helena."
"I arranged an unfortunate relapse."
Serena's face hardened.
"My mother didn't use drugs."
"Details."
Dante's voice sounded in her ear.
He's confessing. Keep him talking.
Serena said, "Why did you try to cut my hair, Evelyn?"
Evelyn stared at it.
"Your mother hid things in your braids."
"The capsule?"
"I suspected something. I didn't know what."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"You were sixteen and angry at everyone. I thought if I frightened you, you'd let me inspect it."
"So you grabbed scissors."
"I made a terrible mistake."
Serena looked at Hale.
"Who was on the boat?"
Hale smiled.
"Gabriel Moretti."
Dante's breathing changed in her earpiece.
"And Evelyn?"
"Yes."
Evelyn shouted, "I was trying to stop them!"
Hale leaned against a post.
"She's telling the truth about that."
Serena stared.
Hale seemed delighted by confusion.
"Your aunt followed us. She suspected something. She tried to get you off the yacht before the explosion."
"So who pushed me?"
Hale's smile faded.
"Gabriel."
Antonio had seen only the hooded figure.
Now they had a name.
Serena asked, "Where is he?"
Hale looked toward the dark water.
"Close."
Dante whispered, Move now.
Before Serena could react, gunfire exploded from the rafters.
Dante's teams returned fire.
Serena dropped behind a steel crate.
Hale ran.
Marco tackled one gunman.
Antonio fired from outside.
Dante appeared beside Serena.
"You hit?"
"No."
He cut Julian's restraints.
Then Evelyn's.
Hale reached a speedboat.
He almost escaped.
Almost.
Then another man stepped onto the dock.
Older.
Broad-shouldered.
White hair.
Gabriel Moretti.
He shot Hale in the leg.
Hale collapsed.
Dante froze.
"Uncle."
Gabriel looked at him.
"Dante."
Serena stood slowly.
Gabriel's eyes moved to her.
After twelve years, the man who had destroyed her life looked almost disappointed.
"You should have stayed dead."
Dante raised his gun.
Gabriel laughed.
"You won't shoot me."
"Why?"
"Because your father is the reason Serena survived."
Dante frowned.
Gabriel continued.
"Antonio sabotaged our retrieval boat after Avery took her. Serena escaped because his interference created the opening."
Antonio emerged from behind a container.
"Stop talking."
Gabriel looked amused.
"Tell him."
Serena turned toward Antonio.
"Is that true?"
Antonio nodded.
"I found Avery's transport route. I paid one of his nurses to get you out."
"The nurse."
"Her name was Rachel Dunn."
Serena's memory sharpened.
Rachel.
The woman who opened the side door.
The woman who gave her money.
The woman who said run.
Serena began to cry.
Not because of the memory.
Because one good person had existed inside the nightmare.
"Where is she?"
Antonio looked down.
"She disappeared afterward."
Gabriel laughed.
"She didn't disappear."
Everyone turned.
Gabriel pointed toward Evelyn.
"Ask her."
Evelyn went pale.
Serena whispered, "What happened to Rachel?"
Evelyn looked at Hale.
Then Gabriel.
Finally at Serena.
"Rachel came to me."
"When?"
"Two weeks after you escaped."
"Why?"
"She wanted protection."
"And?"
"I gave it to her."
Serena's heart lifted.
"She's alive?"
Evelyn nodded.
"Yes."
"Where?"
Before she could answer, Hale lunged from the ground and grabbed a fallen weapon.
Dante fired first.
The gun flew from Hale's hand.
Marco restrained him.
Gabriel used the distraction to run toward the water.
Antonio chased.
Father and brother disappeared between containers.
A single shot echoed.
Then silence.
Dante moved toward them.
Serena followed.
They found Antonio standing alone.
Gabriel was on the ground.
Alive.
Wounded in the shoulder.
Police sirens grew louder in the distance.
Dante stared at his father.
"You called them?"
Antonio nodded.
"This ends legally."
Dante almost laughed.
"You've changed."
"I'm old."
Gabriel coughed.
"This doesn't end anything."
Serena approached him.
"For me, it does."
He looked up.
"You think getting your money back makes you Serena again?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Then what does?"
"I decide that."
For once, Gabriel had nothing to say.
By sunrise, Hale and Gabriel were in federal custody.
Evelyn gave a full statement.
Antonio surrendered evidence covering twelve years of financial crimes, murder conspiracies, identity fraud, and illegal medical experimentation.
Julian was hospitalized but stable.
Serena believed the nightmare was ending.
Then Rachel Dunn called.
The former nurse was alive.
She had lived under another name for eleven years.
She wanted to see Serena.
They arranged to meet at a secure federal office.
Before Serena left, Rachel sent one photograph as proof of identity.
Serena opened it.
Rachel stood beside another woman.
The second woman was older.
Thin.
Familiar.
Serena stared until the room tilted.
Dante caught the phone.
"What?"
Serena pointed at the woman.
"That's impossible."
"Who is she?"
Serena's voice disappeared.
Then memory gave her the answer.
Her mother's perfume.
Her mother's piano.
Her mother's hands braiding her hair.
Serena whispered:
"That's my mother."
May you like
The photograph had been taken yesterday.
Helena Bellacorte was alive.
