Chapter 5 - The Dead Man in the Photograph

Dante stared at his father's face.
There was no doubt.
Older.
Gray hair.
A scar near the chin.
But Antonio Moretti.
Alive.
Five years earlier, Dante had stood beside a closed coffin while two hundred people watched him become head of the Moretti organization.
The official explanation had been a heart attack while traveling in Sicily.
The body had been badly damaged in a vehicle fire during transport.
Dante had accepted dental identification.
Dental identification.
Exactly like Serena.
He almost laughed at the cruelty of it.
Serena watched him.
"Did you know?"
"No."
"Are you sure?"
Dante looked at her.
"Don't ask me that twice."
"Why? Because nobody questions Dante Moretti?"
"Because I buried my father."
The anger in his voice stopped her.
Then she saw what was underneath.
Grief.
Betrayal.
The same things she was carrying.
"I'm sorry," Serena said.
Dante turned away.
"Don't be."
Julian examined the photograph.
"Where was this taken?"
Marco enlarged background details.
A marina.
Boat slips.
A partially visible sign.
Luca spotted it first.
"Montauk."
Dante's jaw tightened.
The Celestine accident had occurred offshore from Montauk.
Of course.
They drove east that night.
Dante wanted Serena to remain at the estate.
She refused.
Julian wanted to come.
Dante refused him.
"Why does she get to go?"
"Because I already lost control of that argument."
Serena almost smiled.
Julian didn't.
"She's my sister."
"Then stay alive in case I fail."
That ended the debate.
Montauk was quiet by the time they arrived.
Marco traced the photograph to an abandoned boat repair facility near the old harbor.
A light burned inside.
Dante entered first.
Serena followed despite his glare.
At the far end of the workshop, an old man sat beside a wooden table.
Antonio Moretti.
Dante stopped.
His father stood.
Five years of rage fit into one silence.
"Dante."
Dante crossed the room and punched him.
Antonio fell against the table.
Marco made no move.
Neither did Serena.
Antonio wiped blood from his mouth.
"I deserved that."
"You deserved worse."
"Probably."
Dante grabbed his jacket.
"I buried you."
"I know."
"You watched me bury you?"
"I couldn't come back."
"You couldn't?"
"It would have gotten you killed."
"Try again."
Antonio looked past him.
At Serena.
His expression broke.
"Little Bell."
Serena froze.
Nobody had called her that.
Not since childhood.
A memory rushed back.
A birthday party.
Antonio Moretti handing her an enormous box.
Inside, a tiny silver bell for the bicycle she wanted.
He had laughed and called her Little Bell.
Serena whispered, "I remember you."
Antonio closed his eyes.
"Then God forgive me."
Dante released him.
"What happened on the boat?"
Antonio sat slowly.
"I was there because Charles called me."
"Why?"
"He believed someone was targeting his children."
"Who?"
"He didn't know."
Antonio looked at Serena.
"The night of the accident, I was below deck when the explosion happened."
Serena's breathing changed.
"Explosion?"
"The yacht didn't strike anything."
Antonio nodded.
"A charge damaged the hull."
"Who planted it?"
"I never proved it."
Dante said, "Tell us what you did see."
Antonio's eyes remained on Serena.
"I saw you on the aft deck."
Memory flickered across her face.
"With who?"
"Your aunt Evelyn."
Silence.
Serena's hand rose to her mouth.
Antonio continued.
"You were arguing."
"About what?"
"I couldn't hear. Then another explosion hit. I was thrown against the railing."
Serena whispered, "Did she push me?"
Antonio shook his head.
"No."
That surprised everyone.
"I saw someone else."
"Who?"
"I couldn't see the face. Hood. Rain jacket."
"But?"
"The person grabbed you."
Serena's eyes closed.
A hand around her wrist.
Exactly.
"I tried to reach you," Antonio said. "The deck tilted. You went over."
"Was I conscious?"
"Yes."
"Could I swim?"
"You were a strong swimmer."
"So how did Avery get me?"
Antonio looked ashamed.
"Because he was waiting."
Dante understood.
"A rescue boat."
"Yes."
"The accident was designed to separate her."
Antonio nodded.
"They pulled Serena from the water before anyone else could."
Serena whispered, "You saw it?"
"From the deck. I thought they were rescuers."
"When did you realize?"
"Two days later."
"Why didn't you tell my parents?"
"I did."
"My father?"
"Yes."
"My mother?"
"No. Charles wanted to protect her until we knew where Serena had been taken."
Serena's face hardened.
"Protect her by letting her think I was dead?"
Antonio looked down.
"It was a terrible decision."
Dante muttered, "Sounds like our fathers."
Antonio did not argue.
Charles and Antonio searched secretly for months.
They discovered Avery.
But before they could reach Serena, she had been moved.
Then Helena learned enough to begin searching herself.
She died soon after.
Antonio became convinced somebody inside both families had access to every investigation.
"So you disappeared," Dante said.
"Eventually."
"Five years ago."
"Because I found proof."
"What proof?"
Antonio stood and opened an old metal cabinet.
Inside were files.
Photographs.
Payment records.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Not Martin Hale.
Not Evelyn Cross.
Gabriel Moretti.
Dante's uncle.
His father's younger brother.
Dante stared.
"Gabriel died twenty years ago."
Antonio shook his head.
"No."
Another dead man.
Another lie.
Antonio explained.
Gabriel had worked secretly with Martin Hale to siphon money from the Bellacorte trust.
When Charles discovered irregularities, Gabriel realized that Serena and Julian would eventually inherit controlling shares and expose everything.
They needed both heirs gone.
"But why not kill Serena?" Marco asked.
Antonio looked at her.
"Because Serena had access."
"To what?"
"A dormant Bellacorte account containing assets nobody else could unlock until she turned twenty-five. Billions."
Serena stared.
"They needed me alive."
"Exactly."
"Without my memories."
"Exactly."
Dante saw the design.
Erase Serena.
Use her identity biometrics when needed.
Keep her hidden.
Destroy anyone searching.
But something had gone wrong.
Serena had escaped Avery's system and vanished into homelessness before they could finish whatever plan they had.
"How did I get away?" Serena asked.
Antonio shook his head.
"I don't know."
A faint memory returned.
A nurse.
Young.
Terrified.
Opening a side door.
Giving Serena forty dollars.
Saying:
Run and never tell anyone your real name.
Serena whispered, "Someone helped me."
Antonio leaned forward.
"Who?"
"I don't remember her name."
Dante said, "You don't need it tonight."
Serena nodded.
Antonio pulled out one final file.
"Evelyn discovered part of the truth."
Serena looked up sharply.
"My aunt?"
"She's not innocent. But she wasn't behind the kidnapping."
"Then why did she try to cut my hair?"
Antonio frowned.
"She did?"
Serena explained the memory.
Antonio considered it.
"Maybe she was looking for something."
Luca, who had joined them after securing the vehicles, suddenly looked at Serena's hair.
"Something hidden."
Everyone turned.
Serena's two-meter hair had not been cut in years because of trauma.
But before the accident, Evelyn had attempted to cut it.
What if Serena's hair had contained something even then?
Luca said, "The necklace clasp wasn't the only metal I felt."
Serena looked alarmed.
"What?"
"There's another hard section near the oldest matting at the back. I assumed it was debris."
"Check."
Luca carefully separated strands.
Ten minutes.
Twenty.
Then his fingers found something.
A small cylindrical capsule, woven and knotted into an old braid so deeply that the hair had grown around it.
Serena stared.
"How long could that have been there?"
Luca said, "Years."
Antonio whispered, "Helena."
"What?"
"Your mother used to braid protective charms into your hair when you were a child. Family tradition."
Luca opened the capsule.
Inside was a rolled strip of waterproof film.
A string of numbers.
Marco examined it.
"Bank coordinates?"
Antonio shook his head.
"Vault code."
Serena looked at him.
"For what?"
"The Bellacorte archive."
Dante frowned.
"What's inside?"
Antonio's face became grim.
"Everything."
They drove back toward New York before dawn.
Halfway there, Dante's phone received an encrypted video.
Unknown sender.
He played it.
Julian appeared tied to a chair.
Blood on his forehead.
Serena screamed his name.
A distorted voice spoke from behind the camera.
"You found Antonio. Very touching."
Dante's eyes hardened.
The voice continued.
"Bring Serena Bellacorte and the capsule to Pier 19 by midnight."
Serena whispered, "No."
The camera moved closer to Julian.
"If you involve police, Julian dies."
Then another chair came into frame.
A woman sat bound beside him.
Elegant.
Silver-haired.
Evelyn Cross.
She looked terrified.
Serena stared.
The distorted voice said:
"One of these two betrayed Serena twelve years ago."
The camera shifted.
A third person stepped from the darkness.
An older man.
Martin Hale.
He smiled directly into the lens.
May you like
Then he said:
"And tomorrow night, Serena gets to decide which one dies first."
