Chapter 3 - The Man Who Opened His Eyes

The first thing I saw was not a stranger.
It was Lorenzo Moretti.
Standing outside my apartment door.
Awake.
Alive.
For several seconds, my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
The man who had spent forty-nine nights lying unconscious behind machines was standing in front of me.
His face was pale.
His movements were slow.
But his eyes were open.
And they were looking directly at me.
I stepped back instinctively.
“How…”
The word barely escaped my mouth.
Lorenzo looked past me.
Toward Mia’s bedroom.
Then back at me.
His voice was quiet.
Almost unfamiliar.
“Where is the girl?”
My heart started racing.
The girl.
Not my daughter.
Not Mia.
The girl.
I tightened my grip on the door.
“Who are you?”
For a moment, something changed in his expression.
Not anger.
Not surprise.
Something closer to confusion.
Then a man appeared behind him.
Elena.
She looked exhausted.
“Clara, wait.”
She quickly stepped between us.
“He woke up two hours ago.”
I stared at her.
“Two hours ago?”
She nodded.
“The doctors are still trying to understand how much he remembers.”
I looked at Lorenzo again.
The man everyone feared.
The man who had been silent for weeks.
The man my daughter sang to.
And now he was standing in front of me asking about her.
“Why are you here?”
Nobody answered.
That silence told me everything.
Something was happening.
Something bigger than a medical miracle.
Lorenzo looked toward Mia’s room again.
“I heard a voice.”
My breath stopped.
“What?”
His eyes moved back to mine.
“A little voice.”
He touched his forehead.
“When I was asleep… I couldn’t move.”
His voice became quieter.
“But I heard her.”
I felt a chill.
“You heard my daughter?”
He nodded.
“She was singing.”
Behind him, Elena looked at me carefully.
Like she was waiting to see how I would react.
I didn’t know what scared me more.
That Lorenzo Moretti remembered my daughter.
Or that my daughter remembered him.
Before I could say anything else, footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Isabella appeared.
The second she saw Lorenzo standing there, her expression changed.
For the first time since I met her…
She looked afraid.
“Lorenzo.”
He turned.
“Isabella.”
The way they looked at each other told me something.
They had known each other for a long time.
A very long time.
“What are you doing here?” Isabella asked.
Lorenzo’s eyes moved toward me.
“I wanted to see the child.”
The room became silent.
Isabella immediately looked at me.
Then at Mia’s door.
“No.”
Her voice was firm.
Everyone froze.
Even Lorenzo.
“No?”
His tone was calm.
But there was power behind it.
Isabella took a step forward.
“You don’t know what happened.”
“I know enough.”
“You don’t.”
For the first time, Lorenzo’s expression changed.
He looked irritated.
“What are you hiding?”
Nobody spoke.
I stood there confused.
Because I was beginning to realize something.
Mia was not just the reason Lorenzo woke up.
She was connected to something nobody wanted to discuss.
And everyone in this house knew it except me.
The next morning, Lorenzo returned to the medical wing.
The doctors insisted he needed rest.
But the entire estate felt different.
The guards moved faster.
The staff whispered less.
Because the person they thought would never wake up…
had awakened.
And he was asking questions.
I spent the morning cleaning the downstairs rooms.
But I couldn’t focus.
Every few minutes, I looked toward the second floor.
Toward the forbidden hallway.
Toward the room where my daughter had done the impossible.
Around noon, Elena found me.
“We need to talk.”
I put down the cloth.
“About Lorenzo?”
She nodded.
We went into a small storage room where nobody could hear us.
Elena closed the door.
“Clara, there is something you need to know.”
I waited.
“When Lorenzo’s car accident happened, it wasn’t just an accident.”
My hands stopped moving.
“What do you mean?”
She looked uncomfortable.
“I shouldn’t be telling you this.”
“But you are.”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
A long silence passed.
“Someone wanted him gone.”
I swallowed.
“Who?”
Elena shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“That’s not true.”
She looked at me.
“You think everyone here tells me everything because I’m a nurse?”
Her voice became bitter.
“I take care of people who have secrets.”
I stayed quiet.
Then she continued.
“Before the accident, Lorenzo was investigating something.”
“What?”
Elena hesitated.
“A betrayal.”
The word felt heavy.
“Inside his own organization.”
I looked toward the hallway.
“And now?”
“Now everyone is afraid because he woke up before they finished what they started.”
I thought about the envelope.
The warning.
The man Mia saw outside.
I reached into my pocket and pulled it out.
Elena read the message.
Her face changed.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone left it in my apartment.”
She looked at me.
“Clara…”
“What?”
She lowered her voice.
“You need to leave.”
I stared.
“What?”
“You and Mia need to leave this estate tonight.”
My heart tightened.
“I can’t.”
“You can.”
“No.”
I looked at her.
“This job is everything I have.”
Elena’s expression softened.
“Clara, money doesn’t matter if someone is trying to hurt your daughter.”
The word hurt stayed in my mind.
Because I knew she was right.
But I also knew something else.
Lorenzo Moretti was awake.
And he was the only person who might know why my daughter had become a target.
That evening, I went upstairs.
Not to the medical room.
To the hallway.
The forbidden door was closed.
I stood there for several seconds.
Then I heard something.
A voice.
Inside.
Lorenzo.
Speaking.
I slowly opened the door.
He was sitting on the edge of the bed.
The machines were still connected.
But he looked stronger.
He looked at me.
“You came.”
I froze.
“You knew I was here?”
He nodded.
“I heard you.”
I stepped inside.
“I need answers.”
“So do I.”
His eyes moved toward the chair where Mia had sat.
“She changed something.”
I crossed my arms.
“She’s a child.”
“I know.”
“Then why does everyone act like she did something impossible?”
Lorenzo looked away.
Because for the first time…
he looked vulnerable.
“She reminded me of someone.”
My chest tightened.
“Who?”
He didn’t answer immediately.
Then he said:
“My daughter.”
I stared.
“I thought you didn’t have children.”
His expression darkened.
“Neither did I.”
The silence that followed felt unbearable.
“What does that mean?”
Before he could respond, the medical monitor suddenly beeped.
A sharp warning sound.
Lorenzo looked toward the door.
His entire expression changed.
Someone was outside.
Not staff.
Not security.
Someone he recognized.
He whispered one name.
A name that made all the color disappear from Isabella’s face when she entered the room.
“Victor.”
The door handle slowly turned.
May you like
The door opened.
And the man standing outside was the person everyone believed had died three years earlier.
