Chapter 4 - The Name Hidden in the Photograph

The cafe door opened.
Everyone looked.
I did too.
A woman stepped inside.
Her face was hidden beneath a dark hood.
Snow covered her shoulders.
She closed the door behind her.
Then she looked directly at me.
Not Victor.
Not Emily.
Me.
My hand moved instinctively toward Emily.
Rex stood between us and the room.
The woman stopped when she saw him.
"Daniel."
Her voice was quiet.
But I knew that voice.
Not because I had heard it recently.
Because I had heard it in memories.
Old recordings.
Old conversations.
A voice I thought I would never hear again.
Emily gasped.
"Mom?"
The entire world seemed to stop.
The woman pulled back her hood.
And there she was.
Claire.
Emily's mother.
Alive.
For three months, everyone had believed she was gone.
For three months, Emily had believed she was lost.
And now she was standing in front of me.
Breathing.
Looking terrified.
I didn't move.
I couldn't.
Because too many questions hit me at once.
Where had she been?
Why had she let her daughter believe she was gone?
Why had she hidden?
And most importantly...
Who had been trying to stop her from being found?
Emily jumped out of her chair.
"Mom!"
Claire crossed the room quickly.
She dropped to her knees and hugged her daughter.
The girl who had spent the morning searching for somewhere safe finally found the person she had been searching for all along.
But Claire wasn't crying because she was happy.
She was crying because she knew this wasn't over.
I watched them closely.
A mother seeing her child after three months should have looked relieved.
Claire looked afraid.
She kept looking toward the windows.
Toward the door.
Toward the people around us.
Like she was waiting for someone else to arrive.
Victor stood slowly.
"You shouldn't have come here."
Claire looked at him.
Her expression changed.
"You knew she was here?"
Victor didn't answer.
That was enough.
Claire stood.
"You brought her here?"
"No."
Victor looked at me.
"He did."
Claire turned toward me.
For a second, I thought she would be angry.
Instead, she looked exhausted.
"You don't understand what you've stepped into, Daniel."
I almost laughed.
Everyone kept saying that.
But nobody ever explained.
"My father knew you."
Claire froze.
The reaction was immediate.
She looked at the necklace in my hand.
Then at the photograph on the table.
"Where did you get that?"
"Emily had it."
Claire closed her eyes.
Like she already knew.
"She wasn't supposed to find it."
"Why?"
She looked at me.
"Because your father died trying to protect that information."
The words hit harder than I expected.
I had spent eight years believing my father's death was an accident.
A heart attack.
A simple ending to a complicated life.
But now...
Everyone around me was telling me the same thing.
It wasn't simple.
It wasn't an accident.
"What information?"
Claire looked around.
Then lowered her voice.
"Not here."
I shook my head.
"No."
She looked surprised.
"You want answers?"
I nodded.
"Then start giving them."
For a moment, nobody spoke.
The cafe continued around us.
People drank coffee.
People laughed.
People lived normal lives.
But at our table, everything had changed.
Claire sat down.
She looked at Emily first.
Then at me.
"Your father discovered a group inside the military."
My face tightened.
"An internal organization?"
She nodded.
"They weren't supposed to exist."
Victor added quietly:
"They operated without authorization."
I looked at him.
"And you know because?"
Victor looked away.
That bothered me.
"Who are you, Victor?"
Silence.
Claire answered.
"He worked with my husband."
I looked at her.
"Your husband?"
She nodded.
"Before he died."
I looked at Emily.
Then back at Claire.
"You said my father."
She didn't correct me.
Because she knew.
The answer was already there.
My father had been connected to Emily's family long before I knew.
Claire continued.
"Your father found evidence that someone inside the system was selling information."
"To who?"
"We never found out."
"Never?"
She shook her head.
"Because everyone involved disappeared."
The words settled heavily.
"Except you."
Claire looked down.
"Except me."
I studied her.
"You disappeared too."
Her face changed.
"I didn't have a choice."
"What happened?"
She took a breath.
Then she looked at Emily.
"Three months ago, they found out I had copied the files."
"Where are the files now?"
Claire didn't answer.
That was the answer.
She had them.
I leaned forward.
"Claire."
She looked at me.
"Where are the files?"
Before she could speak, Rex suddenly turned toward the front window.
His body became tense.
A low growl escaped.
I followed his gaze.
A black sedan had stopped outside.
Not the SUV from earlier.
Another vehicle.
The driver's door opened.
A man stepped out.
Even from a distance, I recognized him.
Thomas Reed.
Claire saw him.
And all the color left her face.
"No."
I stood.
"Who is he?"
Claire whispered:
"The reason your father died."
The words froze me.
Thomas walked toward the cafe.
Slowly.
Confidently.
Like he already knew what was waiting inside.
Victor reached into his coat.
Claire grabbed his arm.
"No."
Victor looked at her.
"We don't have a choice."
Claire shook her head.
"We always have a choice."
The door handle moved.
Thomas was outside.
Emily moved closer to her mother.
I stepped forward.
The entire cafe went silent.
The door opened.
Thomas walked inside.
But he wasn't alone.
Someone followed him.
Someone I never expected to see.
Someone wearing the same military insignia I wore.
Someone carrying an old photograph in his hand.
May you like
He looked directly at me.
And said my father's name.
