Chapter 6 - The Truth Sarah Buried

"Finally."

Rachel's voice came from the darkness.

One word.

Quiet.

Calm.

Almost relieved.

But nobody in that room felt relief.

The lights were gone.

The apartment was silent except for the sound of Chloe breathing beside me.

I couldn’t see her face.

I couldn’t see Liam.

I couldn’t even see Daniel.

But I could feel all three of them frozen.

Waiting.

Rachel knew exactly what she was doing.

She wanted us afraid.

She wanted us to know she was there before she showed herself.

I reached for my phone.

The screen was still glowing.

No signal.

The message from Sarah was still open.

Daniel is lying.

I looked at Daniel in the darkness.

Even without seeing his face clearly, I knew he was watching me.

"Marcus," he whispered.

"Don’t."

I stopped.

"Don’t what?"

"Don’t let her separate us."

My heart tightened.

Because that was exactly what Rachel was trying to do.

She had sent the message.

She had sent the photo.

She wanted me to doubt Daniel.

But then another thought came.

Why would Sarah warn me about Daniel?

Why would she tell me not to trust the man who was protecting her children?

Unless...

Unless there was something I still didn’t know.

The bedroom door creaked.

A thin line of light appeared from the hallway.

Someone had turned on a flashlight.

Then Rachel stepped into view.

She looked nothing like the monster I had imagined.

That was the worst part.

She looked normal.

A woman in her early forties.

Dark hair pulled back.

Simple clothes.

A calm expression.

The kind of person you would trust if you met her at a grocery store.

She looked at Chloe first.

Then Liam.

Then me.

"Marcus," she said softly.

"I’m glad we can finally talk."

I stepped in front of the children.

"You broke into my apartment."

Rachel tilted her head.

"I came here because Sarah put everyone in danger."

"You expect me to believe that?"

She looked disappointed.

"That’s exactly what Sarah wanted."

Daniel moved forward.

"Don't listen to her."

Rachel looked at him.

And smiled.

A small smile.

Like she had been waiting years for that moment.

"You still protect her."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"You don't get to talk about protection."

Rachel ignored him.

She looked at me.

"Marcus, do you know what Sarah did?"

I didn’t answer.

"She stole something."

"The evidence."

Rachel’s expression changed slightly.

So I was right.

The backpack mattered.

"What was inside it?"

Rachel didn't answer.

Instead, she looked at Chloe.

"Your niece doesn't remember everything."

Chloe grabbed my hand.

I looked down.

She was shaking.

"What did you do to her?"

Rachel’s face became serious.

"We tried to help her."

I felt anger rise.

"Help?"

"She was a child."

Rachel sighed.

"You don't understand."

"No."

My voice became louder.

"I understand enough."

I pointed toward Chloe.

"She was afraid to eat."

Rachel looked away for a second.

That tiny reaction told me more than words.

She knew.

She knew about everything.

The fear.

The hunger.

The hidden bread.

The question.

I stepped closer.

"Why was she afraid?"

Rachel didn’t answer.

Daniel did.

"Because they trained her to be."

The room went silent.

I looked at him.

"They?"

Daniel looked at Rachel.

"Her organization."

Rachel's expression hardened.

"Be careful."

Daniel laughed quietly.

"You spent years convincing everyone you were helping children."

He looked at me.

"But you were collecting them."

My stomach turned.

"Collecting?"

Rachel crossed her arms.

"Daniel is making things sound worse than they are."

"Then explain."

She looked at me.

"We ran a behavioral program."

The words sounded clean.

Professional.

Almost harmless.

But I knew better.

"What kind of program?"

She paused.

"For children from unstable homes."

I stared at her.

"And what happened to them?"

Rachel didn't answer.

That was the answer.

Chloe suddenly spoke.

"You hurt Liam."

Everyone turned.

Rachel's face changed.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

"Chloe."

Her voice softened.

"You're confused."

"No."

The little girl stepped closer to me.

"You told Mommy Liam was gone."

Rachel looked at her.

"You don't remember everything."

Chloe shook her head.

"I remember."

Her voice trembled.

"But Mommy came back."

I looked at Daniel.

He looked shocked.

"Sarah came back?"

Liam nodded slowly.

"She found me."

My heart stopped.

"When?"

Liam looked down.

"After they moved me."

I crouched.

"Liam, what happened?"

He looked at Rachel.

Then whispered:

"Mommy found the place where they kept the files."

Rachel immediately stepped forward.

"Enough."

But Liam continued.

"She found my file."

Daniel closed his eyes.

Because he knew.

"What file?"

Liam looked at me.

"The one with my name."

My hands tightened.

"What was in it?"

The boy swallowed.

Then said:

"It said I was an experiment."

The room went completely silent.

Even Rachel stopped moving.

I looked at her.

"You wrote that?"

Rachel’s face became cold.

"You have no idea what you are involved in."

"Then tell me."

She stared at me.

"You want the truth?"

"Yes."

"Your sister destroyed everything trying to expose us."

"Good."

Rachel ignored my response.

"But before she could, she made one mistake."

"What?"

"She trusted someone."

I looked at Daniel.

Rachel smiled.

"Not me."

The silence returned.

My eyes moved between them.

"What are you talking about?"

Rachel stepped closer.

"Ask Daniel where he was the night Sarah disappeared."

I looked at him.

Daniel's face changed.

Not anger.

Pain.

"Marcus..."

"Where were you?"

He didn't answer.

Rachel smiled.

"Exactly."

I felt my stomach sink.

Daniel looked at the children.

"I was trying to save them."

"Then why didn't Sarah know?"

He looked away.

That was enough.

I stepped back.

For the first time, I didn’t know who to believe.

Rachel saw it.

She saw my doubt.

And she used it.

"Marcus, I know this is confusing."

She slowly reached into her pocket.

"I brought something."

She pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

Again.

My blood ran cold.

"Where did you get that?"

Rachel smiled.

"Sarah wrote it."

Daniel moved suddenly.

"Don't open it."

Everyone looked at him.

I held the envelope.

"Why?"

His voice became desperate.

"Because Sarah never wanted you to see it."

Rachel whispered:

"Because it proves what he did."

I stared at Daniel.

"What did you do?"

He didn't answer.

The children were watching.

Waiting.

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

An old photograph.

Sarah.

Daniel.

Liam.

And another person.

Someone standing behind them.

Someone I recognized.

Someone who had been in my life for years.

I looked closer.

My hands began to shake.

Because written on the back of the photo were three words.

"Marcus was there."

I looked up.

Nobody moved.

Rachel watched me.

Daniel looked terrified.

And then Chloe whispered something.

Something that made every piece fall into place.

"Uncle Marcus..."

I turned toward her.

She was staring at the photograph.

"I remember that day."

I couldn’t breathe.

"Which day?"

She pointed at the picture.

"The day Mommy told me to forget your name."

The apartment went silent.

Then my phone lit up.

A new message.

From Sarah.

The message contained only one sentence.

"Marcus, if Chloe remembers you, then Rachel has already found the truth."

And beneath it was another message.

May you like

A location.

My old childhood home.
