Chapter 3 - The Room That Was Never Empty

The floorboard creaked again.

Not from the hallway.

Closer.

Behind me.

For a moment, I couldn’t move.

My mind tried to convince me there was a reasonable explanation.

Maybe the apartment had settled.

Maybe something had fallen.

Maybe fear was making me imagine things.

But then Chloe squeezed my hand harder.

And I knew she heard it too.

A five-year-old child didn’t need an explanation to recognize danger.

She already knew the sound.

"Uncle Marcus..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

I slowly turned around.

The hallway was dark.

The closet door was still slightly open.

Nothing moved.

Nothing looked different.

But I couldn’t shake the feeling that someone was watching us.

I held my phone tightly and moved closer to Chloe.

"Stay behind me."

She nodded.

I didn’t want to scare her.

But I also couldn’t pretend everything was normal anymore.

A woman had come to my door knowing my name.

My sister had warned me not to let her inside.

My niece had told me about a brother I never knew existed.

And now an unknown person had sent me a message saying someone had been hiding in my apartment before I arrived.

I looked toward the closet.

Slowly, I walked forward.

Every step felt louder than it should have.

The closet wasn’t large.

It was just a small storage area near my bedroom where I kept old boxes, winter clothes, and things I rarely used.

There was no reason for anyone to hide there.

Except someone had.

Because when I opened the door completely, I saw something that made my stomach turn.

A small blanket.

Folded neatly in the corner.

Next to it was a plastic cup.

And beside the cup was a child’s drawing.

I picked it up.

The paper was old.

The edges were worn.

The drawing showed three people holding hands.

A woman.

A little girl.

And a boy.

Above them, a child had written:

"MOMMY, CHLOE, AND LIAM."

My fingers went numb.

Liam.

The name Chloe never told me.

The name Sarah never mentioned.

I turned around.

"Chloe."

She was standing at the entrance of the hallway.

The moment she saw the drawing, her face changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

"You know him," I said.

Her eyes filled with tears.

"I miss him."

I crouched down.

"Who was Liam?"

She looked toward the floor.

"My brother."

"Why didn't your mom tell me about him?"

Chloe didn't answer.

Instead, she whispered:

"Because Mommy said people would take him away."

I felt my heart beating faster.

"Take him away from where?"

She looked at me.

And before she could answer, someone knocked on my apartment door.

This time, it wasn’t polite.

It was three sharp hits.

Like a warning.

I stood up immediately.

The woman outside spoke.

"Marcus."

I froze.

"Open the door."

I didn’t respond.

"You're making a mistake."

I looked at Chloe.

She was trembling.

The woman continued.

"You don't know what Sarah did."

My hand tightened around the drawing.

I wanted to believe Sarah.

She was my sister.

The person who helped me through every difficult moment in my life.

But I also couldn't ignore what I was seeing.

A hidden room.

A hidden child.

A secret she had kept for years.

"Who are you?" I shouted.

A pause.

Then:

"My name is Rachel."

The name meant nothing to me.

But Chloe reacted immediately.

She covered her ears.

"No."

I looked at her.

"Chloe?"

"No, no, no..."

She started breathing faster.

"She can't be here."

I moved closer.

"Who is Rachel?"

Chloe shook her head.

"She knows about Liam."

The room felt colder.

I looked back at the door.

"Rachel, why are you here?"

Her answer came calmly.

"Because Sarah ran out of places to hide."

I wanted to open the door.

I wanted answers.

But every instinct told me not to.

Instead, I grabbed my phone and searched for Sarah's number again.

She answered after one ring.

"Marcus?"

"Rachel is here."

The silence on the other end was immediate.

Then Sarah whispered:

"Leave."

"What?"

"Take Chloe and leave right now."

"Sarah, who is Rachel?"

My sister started crying.

I had never heard Sarah cry like that.

Not when our father died.

Not when she went through her divorce.

Not ever.

"Marcus, I need you to trust me."

"I need the truth."

"I know."

"No, you don't understand. Chloe thinks she had a brother. She thinks someone was hiding in my apartment."

Sarah didn't answer.

That was enough.

"Sarah."

Finally, she said:

"Liam wasn't supposed to survive."

I stopped.

"What does that mean?"

"I can't explain this over the phone."

"Then explain it now."

Another knock came from the door.

Rachel again.

"Marcus, Sarah is lying to you."

I looked toward the door.

Sarah heard it.

Her voice became urgent.

"Marcus, listen carefully."

"I'm listening."

"Do not let Rachel talk to Chloe."

"Why?"

"Because she knows exactly what happened the night Liam disappeared."

My eyes moved to Chloe.

She was standing beside the table, holding the old bracelet.

The blue beads shook in her hand.

I lowered my voice.

"What happened that night?"

Sarah was silent.

Then she said:

"Marcus..."

Her voice cracked.

"Liam was taken because he saw something."

"What?"

Before Sarah could answer, the call ended.

Not disconnected.

Ended.

Like someone had taken the phone away from her.

I stared at my screen.

Then I heard something.

A small sound.

From the kitchen.

A chair moving.

I turned.

Nobody was there.

But the front door was still locked.

The windows were closed.

There was nowhere someone could have entered.

Unless...

I looked back toward the hallway.

The closet.

The hidden blanket.

The child's drawing.

Someone had been living in my apartment.

And suddenly, I realized something worse.

They hadn't been hiding from me.

They had been hiding from whoever was outside.

I grabbed Chloe's hand.

"We're leaving."

She nodded quickly.

I grabbed my keys.

My phone.

The backpack.

Everything happened within seconds.

But when I reached the front door, Chloe suddenly stopped.

She stared at the floor.

"Uncle Marcus..."

"What?"

She pointed.

There was a small envelope underneath the door.

It had been pushed inside while we were talking.

My name was written on the front.

Not printed.

Handwritten.

I picked it up.

My hands were shaking.

Inside was a single photograph.

A photograph of my apartment.

Taken from inside.

I looked closer.

The picture showed my living room.

The couch.

The table.

The hallway.

And in the corner of the photo...

A person was standing behind the curtain.

Watching.

On the back of the picture, there were only six words.

"I was here before you."

I felt my blood turn cold.

Because the handwriting wasn’t Rachel’s.

It wasn’t Sarah’s.

It was a child’s handwriting.

Chloe looked at the photo.

Then she whispered a name I had never heard before.

May you like

"That’s Liam."

And behind us, the locked bedroom door slowly began to open.
