Chapter 9 - Sophie's Last Clue

Alexei ordered the house locked.
Maria grabbed Sophie.
Dmitri called police.
The SUV stopped outside.
Viktor stepped out alone.
His hands were visible.
No weapon.
No attempt to run.
He walked to the front door and waited.
Alexei spoke through the intercom.
"Why are you here?"
"Because Daniel is coming."
Maria looked at Sophie.
The child hid behind her.
Viktor continued.
"And if you don't let me inside, you won't know where."
Alexei let police handle the entry.
Officers arrived within minutes.
Viktor surrendered immediately.
Inside an interview room at the estate, he confessed.
Not to poisoning Alexei.
To helping Daniel enter.
Daniel had threatened Viktor's family.
Viktor disabled the cameras.
But he claimed he didn't know Daniel intended to contaminate the coffee.
Sophie had seen Viktor in the study afterward, attempting to remove evidence.
"Then why did she say you put something in the coffee?" Maria asked.
Viktor looked confused.
Sophie corrected her.
"He put yucky coffee away."
Maria blinked.
"You saw him take a cup?"
Sophie nodded.
Two cups.
That changed everything.
The poisoned coffee had indeed been intended for Maria.
Daniel prepared it after learning Alexei planned to reveal the trust.
Alexei accidentally took Maria's cup.
Viktor entered afterward and removed the second cup to hide his own involvement in the security breach.
Cowardice, not attempted murder.
Still serious.
But different.
"Where's Daniel?" Alexei asked.
Viktor gave them an address.
The old community center.
Of course.
Daniel had returned to the place Rafael once used to hide evidence.
Police surrounded it.
This time Maria stayed away.
She had spent too long believing answers required putting herself in danger.
They didn't.
Sometimes courage meant allowing the right people to do their jobs.
Daniel was arrested before dawn.
He had documents, false passports, cash, and copies of financial records.
Enough evidence followed to unravel the rest.
Weeks passed.
The criminal investigation widened.
Maria gave statements.
Alexei testified.
Sergei turned over decades of records.
Elena cooperated fully.
Dmitri confronted the truth about his father.
And Rafael Alvarez's name was finally cleared.
The trust was recognized as legitimate.
Maria learned the amount privately.
She sat in the attorney's office staring at the figure.
She could never earn that much in ten lifetimes.
"What am I supposed to do with this?"
Alexei sat across from her.
"Whatever you want."
"I don't know what I want."
"That's probably healthier than knowing immediately."
She smiled.
Then she looked at him.
"Did you hire me because of the trust?"
"No."
"Why?"
"Initially? To protect you."
"And later?"
Alexei hesitated.
"Because the house became better with you and Sophie in it."
Maria looked away.
There were feelings in that sentence neither of them was ready to name.
Not yet.
Sophie burst into the office wearing her little doctor coat.
Dmitri followed.
"She escaped reception."
"I did not escape," Sophie announced. "I walked."
Alexei nodded solemnly.
"Important distinction."
Sophie climbed beside Maria.
"Are we rich?"
Every adult stared.
Maria laughed.
"Who told you that?"
"Uncle Dmitri."
Dmitri looked horrified.
"I absolutely did not."
Sophie grinned.
Maria kissed her forehead.
"Money doesn't decide who we are."
"Can I get sparkly doctor shoes?"
Maria sighed.
"We'll discuss it."
That afternoon they returned to the estate.
Maria went to Alexei's study.
The desk had been cleaned.
The contaminated cup was gone.
Evidence markers gone.
The room looked normal again.
But Maria didn't.
She opened the drawer.
Sophie's old drawing remained there.
Three stick figures.
Maria.
Sophie.
Alexei.
She stared.
Alexei entered quietly.
"She drew that months ago."
"I know."
"You knew?"
"I found it when I spilled coffee on your papers."
He smiled.
"That explains why it smelled like coffee."
Maria turned.
"What happens now?"
"To Daniel?"
"To us."
Alexei took time before answering.
"You don't work here anymore."
Maria blinked.
"Excuse me?"
"You're wealthy enough to fire me as an employer."
"That's not funny."
"A little."
"Alexei."
He became serious.
"You deserve a life you choose."
"And if I choose to stay?"
"Then stay."
"Not as your maid."
"Never again unless you genuinely want the job."
She smiled.
"No."
"Good."
A comfortable silence settled between them.
Then Sophie ran into the room.
"Mommy!"
Maria turned.
Her daughter held Rafael's letter.
"What are you doing with that?"
"It fell."
"From where?"
Sophie pointed toward the envelope.
Something was sticking from the lining.
Maria took it.
A second, smaller note.
Her father's handwriting.
One sentence.
Maria read it.
Then sat down.
Alexei moved closer.
"What does it say?"
Maria handed him the note.
Rafael had written:
IF PETROV'S SON EVER FINDS YOU, TELL HIM I KEPT MY PROMISE TO HIS FATHER—AND ASK WHETHER HE KEPT HIS.
Maria stared at Alexei.
"What promise?"
Alexei's face changed.
He knew exactly what it meant.
But before he could answer, Teresa appeared in the doorway.
She had heard the question.
"Maria."
Her voice trembled.
"There's one final thing your father asked me never to tell you unless Alexei survived."
May you like
Maria slowly turned toward her.
Teresa closed the door behind her.
