Chapter 8 - The Man Who Came Back

"No."

Maria's answer was immediate.

Sophie was not going anywhere.

Police surrounded Warehouse Seven within the hour.

Maria, Alexei, Dmitri, and Teresa remained at the estate command center while officers studied entrances.

Daniel called again.

This time Maria answered.

"Let Elena go."

"Bring the ledger."

"You already tore out the page."

Daniel laughed softly.

"Did I?"

Maria looked at Alexei.

"The page."

She suddenly understood.

The missing page had never been in the ledger.

Rafael said he wrote the name inside it.

Not on a page.

Maria examined the book's cover.

Blue leather.

She ran her fingers along the inside seam.

Something crackled.

She carefully opened the lining.

A folded sheet slid out.

Names.

Dates.

Transfers.

At the bottom:

DANIEL MARKOV — VIKTOR VOLKOV — HELENA NETWORK.

Proof.

Maria photographed every page.

Copies went to police, lawyers, and secure servers.

Then she returned to the phone.

"I found it."

Daniel's voice changed.

"Bring it."

"No."

A pause.

"You think police can save Elena?"

"I think you need the ledger more than I need to obey you."

Alexei looked at Maria with something like respect.

Daniel remained silent.

Then Maria heard a sound.

A train.

Faint.

Dmitri heard it too.

Warehouse Seven was nowhere near active railway tracks.

He wrote on paper:

HE'S NOT THERE.

The video feed was prerecorded or routed.

They traced possibilities.

Only one Petrov property matching an industrial interior near rail lines existed.

An abandoned distribution center twenty miles west.

Police redirected units.

Maria waited.

Ten minutes.

Twenty.

Then Dmitri's phone rang.

Elena had been found.

Alive.

Daniel was gone.

But he'd left something.

A sealed envelope addressed to Maria.

Police brought it hours later.

Inside was a letter from Rafael.

Not a copy.

Original handwriting.

Maria read it privately.

Her father explained that he had created the trust with money legally earned from a small ownership stake Nikolai had granted him.

The stake later became enormously valuable.

Rafael feared Daniel would steal it.

So he protected it for Maria.

But the letter wasn't about money.

It was about fear.

Rafael wrote that if Maria ever read his words, she should not spend her life avenging him.

"Build something safer than what we inherited."

Maria cried.

Alexei sat nearby without speaking.

Finally she folded the letter.

"He knew."

"Your father knew a lot."

"He knew he might die."

Alexei looked down.

"I'm sorry."

"So am I."

Not accusation.

Shared grief.

Daniel remained missing.

But his network collapsed quickly.

Accounts were frozen.

Records seized.

Former associates began cooperating.

Dmitri finally spoke privately with Elena.

Their reunion was awkward.

Painful.

But real.

Two siblings who had spent decades believing the other belonged to a past that could never return.

Sophie solved the awkwardness by handing Elena a bandage.

"For your boo-boo."

Elena laughed and cried simultaneously.

Three days later, Alexei returned to the estate.

He was thinner.

Tired.

But alive.

Sophie ran toward him.

Maria caught her before she jumped onto him.

"Gently."

Sophie approached solemnly.

"You got better."

Alexei nodded.

"Excellent medical care."

Sophie pointed at herself.

"Me."

"Obviously."

He handed her a small white coat.

Her name had been embroidered on it.

DR. SOPHIE.

Maria rolled her eyes.

"You're encouraging her."

"She saved my life. She gets a coat."

For the first time since the collapse, Maria laughed.

Then Sophie became serious.

"Bad coffee man came back."

The room went silent.

Maria crouched.

"What?"

"I saw him."

"When?"

"Outside."

Alexei moved to the window.

Nothing.

"Sophie, who did you see?"

"The man from Mr. Alexei's room."

Maria's pulse raced.

"Daniel?"

Sophie shook her head.

"The other man."

Everyone froze.

"What other man?"

"The man who put yucky in the coffee."

Maria stared at her.

"You saw him?"

Sophie nodded.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"You didn't ask."

Four-year-old logic.

Maria swallowed.

"Can you show us?"

Sophie walked to the table where newspapers and documents were spread.

She pointed at a photograph.

Not Daniel.

Not Sergei.

Not Dmitri.

Viktor.

Alexei's current security chief.

The man who had called the ambulance.

The man who had controlled the cameras.

The man who had supposedly found the outages.

Alexei whispered:

"Where is Viktor?"

Nobody answered.

Then the estate alarm sounded.

A security voice came through the intercom.

"Unauthorized access. East entrance."

Maria looked toward the windows.

May you like

A black SUV had just passed through the gate.

Viktor was driving.
