Chapter 3 - The Face Inside the Recording

The video lasted only twelve seconds.

But twelve seconds were enough to destroy twenty years of trust.

I stood beside Alessandro as the security footage played across his phone screen.

At first, I couldn’t understand what I was seeing.

The angle was from inside the hallway outside the private study.

The camera showed the door.

The same door where Emma had found Alessandro struggling to breathe.

The same door where I had run in and found my daughter holding the inhaler that saved his life.

For a few seconds, nothing happened.

Then someone appeared.

A person walked into the frame.

Slowly.

Calmly.

Carrying something in their hand.

My heart started beating faster.

Because I knew that walk.

I knew those shoulders.

I knew the way that person moved through the mansion like they belonged there.

Alessandro watched the screen without blinking.

His face became colder with every second.

"Stop it," he whispered.

The video paused.

I looked at him.

"Who was it?"

He didn’t answer.

That frightened me.

Because Alessandro Moretti was not a man who avoided the truth.

Even painful truth.

Especially painful truth.

He pressed play again.

The person in the video stepped closer to the study door.

Their hand reached toward the handle.

Then the footage ended.

No face.

No proof.

Only a silhouette.

Only enough to create doubt.

Only enough to make everyone dangerous.

"Can you identify them?" I asked.

Alessandro placed the phone down.

"Yes."

His voice was quiet.

Too quiet.

"Who?"

He looked at me.

Then at Emma.

And I realized something.

He wasn’t worried about himself anymore.

He was worried about us.

"Not here."

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means whoever did this still has access to this house."

The words made my stomach twist.

The Moretti mansion suddenly felt different.

The walls felt closer.

The hallways felt darker.

Every person walking outside that room became a possible threat.

Emma held onto my dress.

"Mama, can we go home?"

That question broke my heart.

Because home was supposed to be the place where a child felt safe.

But my daughter had spent the evening saving a man from being killed inside someone else’s home.

I knelt beside her.

"We’re okay."

I wanted to believe my own words.

Alessandro watched us.

Then he took out his phone.

"Nobody leaves."

My eyes widened.

"What?"

"Nobody in this mansion leaves until I know the truth."

The way he said it told me he wasn’t asking.

He was making a decision.

I stood up.

"Mr. Moretti, my daughter has been through enough."

His eyes moved toward me.

"I know."

"Then let us go."

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then something unexpected happened.

He apologized.

"I’m sorry."

I stared at him.

I had heard Alessandro Moretti intimidate people.

I had heard him make threats.

I had heard people fear him.

But I had never heard him apologize.

Not once.

"I didn’t mean for Emma to be involved."

His voice softened slightly.

"But she is involved now."

I looked away.

Because I knew he was right.

The moment my daughter gave him that inhaler, she became part of something much bigger than either of us.

A few minutes later, Alessandro called his security team.

Not the mansion guards.

His personal security.

That told me how serious this was.

Three men entered the study.

They were silent.

Professional.

They searched every corner.

The broken glass.

The desk.

The hallway.

The cameras.

Everything.

Then one of them found something.

A small piece of paper hidden beneath the edge of the desk.

"Mr. Moretti."

Alessandro took it.

I watched his expression change.

"What is it?"

He folded the paper immediately.

"Nothing."

I almost laughed.

Nothing?

A hidden note in the room where someone tried to murder him was not nothing.

"You’re lying."

He looked at me.

Most people probably would have stepped back after saying something like that to Alessandro Moretti.

I didn’t.

Not anymore.

Not after my daughter had risked herself for him.

Not after I watched someone try to take his life.

"Clara."

His voice was warning.

But I noticed something else.

He respected that I challenged him.

"The person who changed your medicine wanted you dead," I said. "My daughter saw something. There is a hidden note. And you’re telling me nothing happened?"

He looked down.

Then opened the paper.

Only slightly.

Enough for me to see three words.

Not a message.

Not a threat.

A name.

My breath caught.

"Who is that?"

Alessandro folded the paper again.

"Someone who should be dead."

I felt a chill move through me.

Before I could ask another question, the study door opened.

A woman stepped inside.

Elegant.

Confident.

Perfectly dressed.

Her name was Sofia Moretti.

Alessandro’s younger sister.

I had seen her many times.

She was one of the few people in the mansion who could speak to Alessandro without fear.

She looked at the broken glass.

Then at Emma.

Then at the inhalers.

"What happened?"

Alessandro didn’t respond.

Sofia looked at him.

"Alessandro?"

He stared at her.

Then said something that made my blood run cold.

"You tell me."

Her expression changed.

Only for a second.

But it was there.

Shock.

Fear.

Something she tried to hide.

"What are you talking about?"

"The cameras were erased."

Sofia went silent.

"And someone entered my study before my attack."

She looked toward me.

Then Emma.

Then back at Alessandro.

"I don’t know anything about that."

Alessandro stepped closer.

"Do you know what I found?"

Sofia swallowed.

"What?"

He held up the folded paper.

"The name of someone who knows exactly what happened."

The room went quiet.

Sofia’s eyes moved to the paper.

And for the first time, she looked afraid.

Not confused.

Not offended.

Afraid.

Then her phone rang.

She looked down.

The screen lit up.

She immediately rejected the call.

But it was too late.

Alessandro had seen the name.

"Who was that?"

"No one."

"Who was calling you, Sofia?"

She didn’t answer.

Emma suddenly pulled my hand.

"Mama."

I looked down.

"What is it?"

She pointed toward Sofia.

Her small face had gone pale.

"I know that lady."

Everyone froze.

Sofia looked at her.

"What?"

Emma stepped closer to me.

"She was the lady outside the door."

My heart stopped.

Alessandro slowly turned toward his sister.

"Sofia."

Her face changed.

"Emma, sweetheart, you’re confused."

Emma shook her head.

"No."

She looked at Alessandro.

"She was there."

The silence became unbearable.

Then Alessandro’s phone vibrated.

A new message appeared.

One picture.

One sentence.

He opened it.

And the moment he saw the image, he grabbed my arm and pulled Emma behind him.

Because the picture showed someone standing outside the mansion.

May you like

Watching the window of the study.

And the person in the picture was holding a second inhaler.
