Chapter 2 - The Name Behind the Door

The message on Alessandro Moretti’s phone was only one word.
But that one word changed the entire room.
I watched his face as he read it.
The color returned to his eyes.
Not because he was relieved.
Because he finally understood.
"Who is it?" I asked.
He didn’t answer.
That scared me more than anything.
Alessandro Moretti was a man who always had an answer.
A man who never hesitated.
A man who could walk into a room full of enemies and make everyone else afraid to breathe.
But now he was staring at his phone like it had shown him a ghost.
Emma was still holding my hand.
She looked up at him.
"Mr. Moretti?"
He slowly lowered the phone.
Then he looked at my daughter.
And something changed.
Not softness.
Not exactly.
Something closer to protection.
"Emma," he said quietly, "I need you to stay next to your mother."
She nodded.
She didn’t ask why.
Children always know when adults are scared.
They just don’t always know what to call it.
I pulled her behind me as Alessandro moved toward the study door.
"Wait."
He stopped.
I didn’t know why I said it.
Maybe because I was afraid.
Maybe because I had spent years watching powerful people forget that ordinary people existed.
"Your medicine was changed," I whispered. "Someone tried to kill you."
His jaw tightened.
"I know."
"And whoever did it might still be here."
For a moment, he looked at me.
Not like a servant.
Not like someone beneath him.
Like someone whose words mattered.
Then he nodded.
"You’re right."
Those two words felt strange coming from him.
Alessandro Moretti didn’t admit mistakes.
Not to anyone.
He reached into his jacket and pulled out his phone again.
He typed quickly.
A few seconds later, his expression became colder.
"What are you doing?" I asked.
"Finding out who was inside this room before I arrived."
The footsteps outside stopped.
The entire mansion seemed frozen.
Then Alessandro raised his voice.
"Come in."
The door opened slowly.
A man stepped inside.
He was older.
Maybe late fifties.
Gray hair.
Perfect suit.
Calm expression.
The kind of calm that made me more nervous.
I recognized him immediately.
Marco Bellini.
Alessandro’s closest friend.
The man who had worked beside him for more than twenty years.
Everyone in the mansion respected Marco.
Some people even trusted him more than Alessandro.
Because Alessandro was feared.
But Marco was liked.
And sometimes, I had learned, the most dangerous people were the ones everyone trusted.
Marco looked around the room.
His eyes moved from the broken glass.
To the inhaler.
To Emma.
Then finally to Alessandro.
"What happened?"
His voice sounded concerned.
Almost too concerned.
Alessandro said nothing.
Marco took a step forward.
"Alessandro?"
"I had an asthma attack."
Marco’s expression changed slightly.
Only slightly.
But I saw it.
A tiny pause.
A fraction of a second.
A normal person would have missed it.
But Alessandro didn’t.
"Interesting," Alessandro said.
Marco frowned.
"What?"
"You knew it was an asthma attack."
The room became silent.
Marco looked confused.
"Because you told me about your condition."
"No."
Alessandro stepped closer.
"I never told you."
Marco stopped.
That was when I realized something.
The man standing in front of us had just made a mistake.
A small one.
But a deadly one.
Marco’s face remained controlled.
"I must have heard it from someone else."
Alessandro stared at him.
"Who?"
Marco didn’t answer.
Emma squeezed my fingers.
She was scared.
So was I.
Because the friendly man who everyone trusted was suddenly standing in the middle of a room where someone had tried to murder his oldest friend.
Alessandro picked up the altered inhaler.
"Someone switched this."
Marco looked at it.
Then quickly looked away.
"I’m sure there’s an explanation."
"There is."
Alessandro’s voice became quiet.
"Someone wanted me dead."
Marco sighed.
"Alessandro, you’re accusing the wrong people."
"Am I?"
"You’re emotional."
A dangerous smile appeared on Alessandro’s face.
"No."
He held up the inhaler.
"I’m alive."
Nobody moved.
Then Emma spoke.
Small.
Quiet.
But loud enough for everyone.
"He was there."
All of us turned.
Marco looked at her.
"What?"
Emma hid slightly behind me.
I knelt down beside her.
"What did you say, sweetheart?"
She looked at Alessandro.
Then at Marco.
"He was there."
My heart stopped.
Alessandro’s eyes narrowed.
"Who was there?"
Emma pointed.
Her tiny finger slowly lifted.
Straight toward Marco.
"He was talking in the hallway."
The silence afterward felt unbearable.
Marco stared at her.
Not angry.
Not yet.
But surprised.
And that was enough.
Because innocent children didn’t understand lies.
They just remembered what they saw.
Marco forced a small smile.
"Little girl, you must be mistaken."
Emma shook her head.
"No."
Her voice became stronger.
"He said someone would get hurt."
I felt cold all over.
Alessandro moved immediately.
He placed himself between Emma and Marco.
"Leave."
Marco looked at him.
"After twenty years?"
"Leave."
The two men stared at each other.
There was history between them.
Years of loyalty.
Years of secrets.
Years of things I would never understand.
Marco slowly stepped backward.
"This is a mistake."
Alessandro didn’t respond.
Marco reached the door.
Then he stopped.
He looked at me.
At Emma.
And for one second, his expression changed.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Fear.
Like he knew something we didn’t.
Then he left.
The door closed.
Only then did I realize I had been holding my breath.
Emma looked up at Alessandro.
"Are you mad at me?"
His expression softened.
"No."
"But I told."
"You did the right thing."
She looked down.
"I just didn't want you to die."
Those words hit harder than anything else that night.
Alessandro looked away.
For a moment, the powerful man disappeared.
And I saw someone else.
Someone who had spent years believing nobody cared whether he lived or died.
Then his phone rang.
He answered immediately.
A few seconds passed.
His face changed.
"What?"
I watched him listen.
Then slowly turn toward me.
"Say that again."
A pause.
Then his grip tightened around the phone.
"No."
His voice dropped.
"That’s impossible."
I stepped closer.
"What happened?"
He looked at Emma.
Then at me.
"The security cameras."
My stomach tightened.
"What about them?"
"They recorded everything."
"Then you know who did it."
He didn’t answer.
That frightened me.
Because Alessandro Moretti looked like a man who had just discovered something worse than an attempted murder.
"Alessandro?"
He slowly lowered the phone.
"The cameras were erased."
I swallowed.
"By who?"
His eyes moved toward the hallway.
Toward the same place where Emma said she heard someone speaking.
Then his phone received one final message.
A video file.
No name.
No number.
Just one sentence.
Alessandro opened it.
And the moment the screen lit up, his face turned completely pale.
Because the person in the recording was not standing outside the study.
May you like
They were inside.
And they were holding Emma’s inhaler before the attack began.
