Chapter 4 - The Enemy Behind the Name

A woman stood in my office doorway, covered in rain, whispering:

“Adrian… I know who killed Luca.”

When I raised my gun, I recognized the woman from the photograph.

She placed an old wedding ring on my desk.

Three words were engraved inside:

“Never trust Vincent.”

I suddenly realized the person I thought was dead had been hiding for three years.

The woman standing in front of me was not a ghost.

She was a warning.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The gun in my hand remained pointed at her.

Marcus stood beside me, frozen.

Elena covered her mouth.

And the woman in the doorway looked at me with eyes filled with exhaustion.

Not fear.

Not anger.

Regret.

“Adrian…”

She said my name like she had been waiting years to say it.

I tightened my grip.

“Who are you?”

The woman looked at the photograph on my desk.

Then at the ring beside it.

“My name is Sofia.”

The room went silent.

Because I knew that name.

Everyone in my family knew that name.

Sofia Moretti.

Vincent’s wife.

The woman everyone believed died three years ago.

The woman whose funeral I attended.

The woman whose death was explained as a tragic illness.

The woman standing in front of me alive.

“You’re dead.”

Her eyes lowered.

“I was supposed to be.”

Those words made the entire room colder.

I stepped closer.

“Explain.”

Sofia looked toward Elena.

Then Marcus.

Then me.

“Before I tell you anything, you need to understand one thing.”

She swallowed.

“Vincent was never protecting this family.”

My jaw tightened.

“Then what was he doing?”

She looked directly at me.

“Controlling it.”

I had spent my entire life believing power came from money.

From influence.

From fear.

But standing there, listening to Vincent’s wife tell me he had manipulated everyone around us, I realized something.

The most dangerous people were not always the ones holding weapons.

Sometimes they were the ones holding secrets.

“Three years ago,” Sofia began, “Vincent found out Luca discovered the truth.”

I stared at her.

“What truth?”

She looked at the broken name tag on my desk.

“The same truth he was trying to hide tonight.”

I waited.

But she hesitated.

And that hesitation made me angry.

“No more secrets.”

My voice echoed through the office.

“You walked into my house after three years of hiding. You know my brother died. You know Vincent is involved. So tell me everything.”

Sofia closed her eyes.

Then she finally spoke.

“Luca discovered Vincent was stealing from the family.”

Marcus looked down.

As if he already knew.

“How much?”

“More than money.”

That answer confused me.

“What does that mean?”

Sofia walked toward the desk.

She touched the photograph.

“Vincent wasn’t just moving money.”

She looked at me.

“He was building something.”

My expression hardened.

“Something like what?”

“A replacement.”

The word stayed in the air.

A replacement.

For me.

I understood immediately.

Vincent had not wanted my money.

He wanted my position.

My empire.

My name.

Everything I had built.

“How did Luca find out?”

Sofia looked away.

“Because he found the accounts.”

“What accounts?”

“Hidden accounts.”

She paused.

“Accounts connected to companies that did not officially exist.”

I felt my hands tighten.

For years, Vincent had handled parts of my business operations.

He had always said it was because he wanted to protect me from unnecessary details.

I had believed him.

Because trust was easier than suspicion.

And that had nearly killed me.

“Why didn’t Luca tell me?”

Sofia’s face changed.

Pain appeared.

“Because he tried.”

The room went quiet.

“He called you that night.”

My heart stopped.

The last phone call.

The one I ignored.

I remembered it.

Luca’s name on my screen.

I was in a meeting.

I looked at the phone.

I told myself I would call him back.

Then another hour passed.

Then another.

Then he was gone.

My chest tightened.

“What did he say?”

Sofia looked at me.

“He left you a voicemail.”

I froze.

“What?”

“He knew something might happen.”

She reached into her coat.

She pulled out a small device.

A recording chip.

My eyes narrowed.

“Where did you get that?”

“Luca gave it to me.”

Marcus stepped forward.

“Before he died?”

Sofia nodded.

“He knew Vincent was watching him.”

I stared at the chip.

A piece of my brother’s final hours.

A voice from the person I failed to protect.

“Play it.”

Nobody moved.

Sofia connected the chip to my computer.

The screen flickered.

Then a voice filled the room.

“Adrian…”

I stopped breathing.

Luca.

Older.

Tired.

Scared.

But alive.

“If you’re hearing this, something happened.”

My eyes closed.

I had heard his voice thousands of times.

But never like this.

Never afraid.

“I don’t have much time.”

A pause.

Then Luca continued.

“Do not trust Vincent.”

The same words.

The same warning.

The same name.

“Everyone thinks he is helping you.”

Another pause.

“He isn’t.”

The recording became distorted.

Then his voice returned.

“He has someone inside your security team.”

Marcus immediately looked away.

I noticed.

And so did everyone else.

The recording continued.

“Adrian, there is one person you have never suspected because you believe they would never betray you.”

My heart began racing.

“Find the person who was with me the night before I died.”

The recording stopped.

That was it.

No explanation.

No name.

No answer.

Only a mystery left behind.

I turned toward Marcus.

He looked uncomfortable.

“Why are you looking at me?”

Because I had already started thinking the same thing.

The person who was with Luca.

The person who knew the truth.

The person who had access.

Everyone in that room suddenly became a possibility.

Including people I loved.

Sofia stepped closer.

“There’s more.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Vincent didn’t know I survived.”

That changed everything.

“Then how did you escape?”

Her face became darker.

“Because someone helped me.”

“Who?”

She looked at the door.

Not at me.

Not at Marcus.

Not at Elena.

At the hallway.

“Someone who still works for you.”

The lights suddenly came back on.

At the exact same moment, every security monitor in my office turned black.

Marcus checked his phone.

His face changed.

“What?”

I looked at him.

“The cameras.”

“What about them?”

He swallowed.

“All footage from the last hour has been deleted.”

Nobody spoke.

Someone had entered my house.

Someone had moved through my security system.

Someone who knew exactly how to erase their presence.

I walked toward the monitors.

A single file appeared on the screen.

A video.

Created tonight.

I opened it.

The footage showed my bedroom hallway.

The angle was from one of my hidden cameras.

I watched myself leaving my room earlier.

Then the image changed.

Someone appeared behind me.

Standing silently.

Watching.

The camera zoomed in.

My blood turned cold.

Because I recognized the person.

The person had been inside my house for years.

The person had protected my family.

The person I trusted more than anyone.

Marcus whispered:

“Adrian…”

I looked at him.

He looked back at the screen.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A voice spoke.

“Adrian, don’t listen to Sofia.”

I froze.

Because I knew that voice.

It was the last voice I expected to hear.

Luca.

May you like

The call ended.

And the office door behind me slowly opened.
