Chapter 3 - The Photograph That Changed Everything

A man stood outside my locked bedroom door, whispering:
“Adrian... you need to see what I found.”
I opened the door expecting Vincent.
But I found my oldest security guard holding Luca’s missing phone.
The last message on the screen was still unread:
“Do not trust anyone in this house.”
I suddenly realized my brother’s death was never an accident.
The man standing outside my door was Marcus.
He had worked for my family for seventeen years.
Before I built my empire.
Before people knew my name.
Before anyone feared me.
Marcus was there.
He was the one person who had never asked for anything.
No promotions.
No money.
No influence.
Only loyalty.
That was why seeing Luca’s phone in his hand made my chest tighten.
Because three years ago, everyone told me the phone disappeared in the crash.
The police said it burned.
The investigators said there was nothing left.
I believed them.
Or maybe I wanted to.
Because accepting that someone had stolen my brother’s final words meant accepting that someone close to me had been involved.
And I was not ready for that.
Not until now.
“Where did you get it?”
Marcus looked over his shoulder.
The hallway was empty.
Then he stepped inside and closed the door behind him.
“I found it hidden inside the old security room.”
My eyes narrowed.
“The security room was searched after the accident.”
“I know.”
“By who?”
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation told me enough.
“Marcus.”
He swallowed.
“By Vincent.”
The room became silent.
Again.
That name kept appearing.
Like a shadow following me.
I looked at the phone in his hand.
“Does it work?”
Marcus nodded.
“Barely.”
“Give it to me.”
He handed it over.
The device was old.
The screen was cracked.
But when I pressed the power button, it turned on.
One notification appeared.
A message.
Sent three years ago.
Never opened.
My fingers tightened around the phone.
Because the sender was Luca.
My brother.
My dead brother.
The message contained only one sentence.
“Adrian, if something happens to me, Elena knows where the truth is.”
I looked toward Elena.
She covered her mouth.
“I never knew he sent that.”
I stared at the screen.
My mind moved faster than I could control.
Luca trusted Elena.
Elena hid evidence.
Vincent threatened her.
And someone inside my family wanted me away from the truth.
But there was something else.
Something I still could not understand.
Why leave clues?
Why hide them instead of destroying them?
Unless Luca knew someone would eventually find them.
Unless he knew I would not stop.
I looked at Marcus.
“Why are you helping me now?”
His face changed.
A mixture of guilt and pain.
“Because I should have helped you three years ago.”
That answer bothered me.
“What happened?”
Marcus looked down.
“The night Luca died, I saw Vincent leave the house.”
I froze.
“What?”
“I was checking the cameras.”
“Then why didn’t you tell me?”
His silence was the answer.
“Marcus.”
He closed his eyes.
“Because I was afraid.”
The words shocked me.
Not because he admitted fear.
Because I understood.
Fear had controlled everyone around me.
Elena.
The staff.
Even people who wanted to protect me.
“Afraid of Vincent?”
Marcus nodded.
“He knew things about everyone.”
“What things?”
“Secrets.”
I laughed quietly.
Not because it was funny.
Because it was exactly how Vincent survived.
He collected weaknesses.
He stored them.
He used them whenever someone became dangerous.
And somehow, I had never noticed.
I had spent years looking for enemies outside my family.
I never considered the possibility that my greatest threat ate dinner at my table.
I looked at the photograph from Luca’s envelope.
The image showed Luca standing beside Vincent.
But there was something else.
A person partially hidden in the background.
A woman.
I picked up the photograph.
“Who is she?”
Elena stepped closer.
Her face changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
“You know her?”
She slowly nodded.
“Yes.”
My stomach tightened.
“Who?”
Elena looked at me.
“She was Vincent’s wife.”
I stared at the photograph.
“That’s impossible.”
“She died before I started working here.”
“Then why is she in this picture?”
Nobody answered.
Because nobody had an answer.
Or because the answer was dangerous.
I turned the photograph over.
Nothing.
Only a date.
Three days before Luca died.
Three days.
I looked at Marcus.
“Find everything about this woman.”
He nodded.
Then suddenly, the lights went out.
The entire mansion fell into darkness.
Lily screamed from the guest room.
Elena immediately ran toward the door.
I grabbed my gun from the drawer beside the bed.
Not because I wanted violence.
Because I had learned something important.
People only attacked when they were afraid of what you knew.
“Stay here.”
I moved into the hallway.
My security system should have switched to emergency power.
It did not.
Someone had disabled it.
Someone who knew the house.
Someone who had access.
The hallway was silent.
Too silent.
Then I heard footsteps.
Slow.
Careful.
Coming from the east wing.
The same direction as my private office.
My office.
The one place where I kept every secret about my family.
I moved toward it.
Marcus followed.
When we reached the door, I noticed something.
The lock was damaged.
Someone had forced it.
Inside, papers were scattered everywhere.
Drawers were open.
Files were missing.
But whoever entered was not searching randomly.
They knew exactly what they wanted.
I walked to my desk.
The hidden compartment underneath was open.
Empty.
My heart sank.
Inside that compartment was the one thing Luca gave me before he died.
A letter.
A letter I had never shown anyone.
Because I had never opened it.
I was too afraid.
The envelope was still there.
But something was wrong.
The seal had been broken.
Someone had already read it.
Marcus looked at me.
“Adrian...”
I picked up the envelope.
My hands were steady.
But inside, everything was collapsing.
Someone had entered my office.
Someone had found Luca’s final message.
Someone knew what I was about to discover.
Then my phone vibrated.
Unknown number.
One new message.
I opened it.
A picture appeared.
It was taken inside my mansion.
Tonight.
My blood went cold.
Because the picture showed me standing in the hallway.
Taken from behind.
A second message appeared.
“You are looking in the wrong direction.”
I stared at the screen.
Then another message arrived.
“He is not your enemy.”
A name appeared beneath it.
A name I never expected.
The office door slowly opened behind me.
May you like
And someone whispered:
“Adrian...”
