Chapter 6 - The Son Who Was Never Buried

Antonio Moretti forgot how to breathe.

The screen in front of him showed a face he had dreamed about every night for five years.

A face he had seen in photographs.

A face he had touched for the last time in a hospital room.

His son.

Older.

Alive.

Standing inside the bedroom everyone believed was empty.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Even Richard, the man who always had an answer, was silent.

Antonio stepped closer to the monitor.

His hands trembled.

Not from fear.

From something much more dangerous.

Hope.

"Play it again."

His voice was quiet.

But everyone heard the pain behind it.

The security system replayed the footage.

The child turned toward the camera.

The image was unclear.

The lighting was dark.

But the voice was enough.

"Dad..."

Antonio closed his eyes.

A single tear fell.

For five years, he had forced himself to accept that his son was gone.

Now his heart refused to believe what his mind had accepted.

Sophia stood beside him.

Crying silently.

"He survived."

Antonio looked at her.

"You knew?"

Sophia shook her head.

"Not like this."

"Then explain."

She looked at the screen.

"I knew he was alive after the accident."

Antonio froze.

The room became colder.

"What?"

Sophia looked at him.

"I found out three days after they told me he died."

Antonio stared.

"Three days?"

She nodded.

"They showed me fake records. They showed me fake reports. They wanted me to believe he was gone."

Antonio's jaw tightened.

"Who?"

Sophia looked at Richard.

The answer was obvious.

But she still couldn't say it.

Antonio turned toward Richard.

"You."

Richard immediately shook his head.

"No."

Antonio walked toward him.

"Then explain why my wife is looking at you."

Richard stepped back.

"You are emotional right now."

A small smile appeared on Antonio's face.

Not because he was calm.

Because he finally understood.

For five years, Richard had used those words.

Emotional.

Angry.

Unstable.

Every time Antonio asked questions, Richard made him believe his grief was affecting his judgment.

But maybe the grief was never the problem.

Maybe the truth was.

Antonio looked at the monitor again.

The video continued.

His son stood in the bedroom.

Then another figure appeared behind him.

A person walking into the room.

Antonio immediately noticed.

The person was carrying something.

A folder.

The same type of folder he had seen in Sophia's hands.

The video froze.

Antonio pointed at the screen.

"Zoom in."

The security team adjusted the image.

The person became clearer.

Antonio stared.

Because the person entering his son's room was not Richard.

It was someone else.

Someone he never suspected.

Someone who had been part of his family for years.

Sophia whispered:

"No..."

Antonio looked at her.

"You know them?"

Sophia's face turned pale.

"I thought they were dead."

The room went silent.

Antonio looked back at the screen.

"Who?"

Sophia didn't answer.

Antonio grabbed her arm.

"Who?"

She looked at him.

Then whispered:

"Your brother."

Antonio froze.

His brother.

The person who disappeared from their lives years ago.

The person everyone believed had left the city.

The person Antonio never searched for because he thought he had betrayed him.

"No."

Sophia nodded.

"Yes."

Antonio stepped back.

His entire family history suddenly felt like a lie.

His brother.

His wife.

His son.

All connected by secrets he never knew existed.

Richard spoke quietly.

"Antonio, you need to stop."

Everyone looked at him.

He continued:

"You don't understand what happened."

Antonio turned.

"I understand enough."

Richard shook his head.

"No. You don't."

For the first time, Richard looked afraid.

"There are things you don't know about your son."

Antonio's expression changed.

"What things?"

Richard looked at the screen.

"Your son wasn't just a witness."

A pause.

"He found something."

Antonio stared.

"What?"

Richard looked away.

"Something that could destroy everyone."

Antonio laughed coldly.

"My seven-year-old son discovered something powerful enough to scare adults?"

Richard didn't answer.

Because that was exactly what happened.

Antonio walked toward the monitor.

The recording continued.

His son moved closer to the camera.

Then the child’s voice became clearer.

"Dad..."

Antonio stopped.

"I know you are angry."

The boy's voice shook.

"But please listen."

Antonio touched the screen.

His son's voice continued.

"I found out who was lying."

Everyone in the room became still.

The child continued.

"They told me Mommy was gone."

Antonio looked at Sophia.

She covered her mouth.

"But Mommy came back."

A pause.

"She told me not to tell anyone."

Antonio's eyes filled with tears.

His son knew.

His son had been carrying this alone.

Then the recording changed.

A man's voice appeared.

"Give me the file."

Antonio froze.

The voice was familiar.

Very familiar.

His eyes moved toward Richard.

The recording continued.

Young Antonio's son whispered:

"No."

Then a loud sound.

A struggle.

The screen went dark.

Everyone stood frozen.

Antonio slowly turned toward Richard.

Richard's face had lost all color.

"That voice..."

Antonio whispered.

"That was you."

Richard said nothing.

Antonio walked closer.

"You were there."

Richard looked at the floor.

"You don't know what happened."

Antonio grabbed him by the collar.

"You were there when my son disappeared."

The guards moved forward.

But Antonio stopped them.

He wanted Richard to answer.

Not hide.

"Where is my son?"

Richard looked at him.

For the first time in five years, he looked defeated.

"I tried to protect him."

Antonio stared.

"From who?"

Richard didn't respond.

"From who?"

Richard finally whispered:

"From the person who planned everything."

Antonio released him.

"Who?"

Richard looked toward Sophia.

Then Elena.

Then Lily.

His eyes stopped on the little girl.

Antonio noticed.

"What are you looking at?"

Richard said nothing.

Antonio stepped forward.

"Who planned this?"

Richard swallowed.

Then:

"The person who knew your son would find the truth."

Antonio waited.

"The person who knew you would never suspect them."

A long silence.

Antonio's phone suddenly vibrated.

Everyone looked.

Unknown number.

Again.

Antonio answered.

No one spoke.

Then a child's voice came through.

"Dad."

Antonio froze.

Not from hearing his son.

But from what came next.

The child whispered:

"Don't trust Mommy."

Sophia's face changed.

Antonio slowly looked at his wife.

The voice continued:

"She didn't tell you why she left me."

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then the office door slowly opened.

A small figure stood outside.

Holding the same toy bear from his son's room.

May you like

And the child whispered:

"She wasn't the only one who came back."
