Chapter 5 - The Wife Who Came Back With A Warning

Antonio Moretti had faced death many times.

He had looked into the eyes of men who wanted him gone.

He had survived betrayals.

He had watched enemies fall.

But nothing prepared him for seeing the woman he buried standing in front of him.

Sophia.

Alive.

For several seconds, Antonio couldn't move.

His mind refused to accept what his eyes were seeing.

The woman standing near the office door was older.

Tired.

Different.

But it was her.

The same eyes.

The same voice.

The same expression she had when she looked at him after their son was born.

Richard stood behind her.

Holding the old file.

Watching.

Too calmly.

Antonio noticed.

That was the first thing that felt wrong.

Richard was not shocked.

He was not confused.

He was not afraid.

He looked like someone who had been waiting for this moment.

Antonio slowly turned toward him.

"You knew."

Richard remained silent.

Antonio's voice became colder.

"You knew she was alive."

Richard looked down.

"Antonio..."

"No."

Antonio stepped forward.

"Don't say my name like you still have the right."

Sophia looked at him.

Pain appeared in her eyes.

"Antonio, please."

He turned toward her.

"Five years."

His voice cracked slightly.

"Five years I visited your grave."

Sophia looked away.

"I know."

"No, you don't."

Antonio's hands tightened.

"You don't know what it feels like to wake up every morning believing your family is gone."

Sophia closed her eyes.

A tear fell.

"I know exactly what it feels like."

The answer stopped him.

Because he realized something.

She wasn't defending herself.

She was carrying the same pain.

Antonio looked at Richard.

"What happened?"

Richard finally spoke.

"You need to understand something."

Antonio stared at him.

"That sentence is always used by people who are about to lie."

Richard stepped inside.

The security guards immediately moved closer.

Antonio raised his hand.

Everyone stopped.

He wanted answers.

Not violence.

Not yet.

Sophia slowly walked into the room.

She looked around.

Her eyes stopped at the photograph of their son on Antonio's desk.

Her expression broke.

"I missed him."

Antonio followed her eyes.

The anger inside him weakened for a second.

Because that was real.

A mother looking at a child she thought she lost.

But then the questions returned.

"Why?"

Sophia looked at him.

"Because someone was trying to destroy this family."

"Who?"

She looked at Richard.

Richard's face changed.

Just slightly.

But Antonio noticed.

"Richard."

The room became silent.

Antonio laughed quietly.

A cold laugh.

"The man who helped me survive after your death."

Sophia whispered:

"He was never helping you."

Richard immediately stepped forward.

"Be careful, Sophia."

Antonio looked between them.

There it was.

Fear.

Not from Antonio.

From Richard.

Antonio noticed every detail.

The way Richard avoided eye contact.

The way his hand tightened around the file.

The way Sophia looked at him.

Like she knew exactly what he was capable of.

Antonio walked toward Richard.

"Give me the file."

Richard didn't move.

"Antonio, listen to me."

"Give me the file."

A long silence.

Then Richard handed it over.

Antonio opened it.

Inside were documents.

Photographs.

Reports.

The first page had a date.

Five years ago.

The night his son died.

His eyes moved across the words.

Then stopped.

His expression changed.

Because the report was not about an accident.

It was an investigation.

An investigation his wife had started.

Antonio looked at Sophia.

"You knew."

She nodded.

"I found out something was wrong."

"What?"

Sophia looked at the file.

"Your son saw something."

Antonio frowned.

"My son was seven."

"I know."

"Children don't investigate things."

Sophia looked at him.

"He wasn't investigating."

A pause.

"He was trying to protect us."

Antonio opened another document.

A list of names.

Payments.

Dates.

Transfers.

His eyes moved faster.

Then he saw one name.

Richard.

His breathing changed.

Richard spoke quickly.

"Antonio, don't believe everything you see."

Antonio looked up.

"Why?"

"Because someone wanted you to find that."

"Who?"

Richard didn't answer.

That was enough.

Antonio closed the file.

"Where is my son?"

The question changed the room.

Sophia looked at him.

Her eyes filled with pain.

Antonio repeated:

"Where is my son?"

She took a slow breath.

"Antonio..."

"No."

His voice became louder.

"I spent five years believing my son died."

Sophia looked down.

"Because that is what they wanted you to believe."

Antonio stepped closer.

"Then tell me the truth."

Sophia looked at Richard.

Then whispered:

"Your son survived that night."

The room went completely silent.

Antonio stared.

"What?"

Richard's expression changed.

"That's impossible."

Antonio turned toward him.

"You said impossible too quickly."

Richard froze.

Sophia continued.

"They took him."

Antonio felt like the floor moved beneath him.

"Who?"

"I don't know everyone involved."

"Who took him?"

Sophia looked at the file.

"Someone inside your organization."

Antonio immediately thought of every person who had access to his life.

Every person who knew his movements.

Every person who had been near his family.

Richard.

The name appeared again.

Richard stepped forward.

"Antonio, she is manipulating you."

Antonio looked at him.

"Then why are you afraid?"

Richard didn't answer.

The silence was louder than any confession.

Suddenly, Lily entered the office.

Nobody noticed her walking in.

She looked at Sophia.

Then at Antonio.

Then she said:

"I know her."

Everyone froze.

Antonio looked down.

"Lily."

The little girl pointed at Sophia.

"She came to my house."

Sophia's face changed.

"What?"

Elena ran into the room.

"Lily, stop."

But it was too late.

Antonio looked at Sophia.

"When?"

The child thought.

"Before Mommy worked here."

Antonio's eyes narrowed.

"You met Sophia before?"

Lily nodded.

"She gave me something."

Antonio felt a cold feeling.

"What did she give you?"

The little girl reached into her pocket.

She pulled out a small folded paper.

Sophia immediately stood.

"Where did you get that?"

Lily looked at her.

"You told me to keep it safe."

Antonio took the paper.

His hands shook.

He opened it.

Only one sentence was written inside.

In Sophia's handwriting.

"If Antonio finds this, it means I failed."

Antonio looked at Sophia.

She was crying.

"What does that mean?"

Sophia opened her mouth.

But before she could answer...

The mansion lights suddenly went out.

Every screen in Antonio's office turned black.

Then one monitor turned on.

A live camera feed appeared.

A room.

Dark.

Empty.

Antonio stepped closer.

Because he recognized that room.

It was his son's bedroom.

But someone was sitting on the bed.

Someone with their back facing the camera.

A child's voice came from the speakers.

"Dad..."

Antonio stopped breathing.

May you like

The child slowly turned around.

And Antonio saw the face he had spent five years believing he would never see again.
