Chapter 4 - The Man Who Was Buried Twice

The name on the paper stared back at him.

Thomas Sloan.

Everett Sloan stood in the middle of his courtroom holding a piece of paper that felt heavier than anything he had ever held.

Because Thomas Sloan was not just a name.

He was his brother.

His younger brother.

The man who had been declared dead fifteen years ago.

The man whose funeral Everett had attended.

The man whose grave he had visited every year.

The man he had cried over.

And now someone was telling him he was alive.

The courtroom remained silent.

Nobody knew what to say.

Not even Everett.

The judge who had spent decades finding answers for others suddenly had no answers for himself.

"Judge Sloan..."

Elena's voice pulled him back.

Everett looked at her.

Her expression told him something he didn't want to believe.

She wasn't surprised.

She had known.

"You knew Thomas was alive."

It wasn't a question.

It was an accusation.

Elena looked down.

"I knew he survived."

The words cut deeper.

Everett stepped closer.

"Survived?"

His voice became colder.

"You let me believe my brother was dead."

Elena looked at him with sadness.

"I let you believe what they wanted you to believe."

Everett shook his head.

"No."

He looked around the courtroom.

"No more secrets."

His eyes moved toward Daniel.

"You knew too."

Daniel didn't deny it.

That was the worst part.

Everett had spent his entire career recognizing lies.

And now he was surrounded by people who had been lying to him for decades.

Daniel slowly nodded.

"I found out the truth five years ago."

Everett's face hardened.

"Five years?"

The courtroom felt smaller.

"You knew for five years that my brother was alive?"

Daniel looked away.

"I was trying to protect you."

Everett laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because the excuse sounded exactly like every other lie he had heard.

"Everyone says that."

He looked at Elena.

"They said they were protecting me when they took you away."

He looked at Daniel.

"They said they were protecting me when they hid the letters."

He looked at the empty chair where the messenger had been sitting.

"And now you're saying you protected me too."

Nobody answered.

Because there was nothing to say.

Everett turned back toward the little girl.

She was still holding her mother's hand.

She looked confused.

She didn't understand the weight of the conversation happening around her.

To her, this was simple.

She had found someone her mother said she needed to find.

She had brought him a truth nobody wanted to reveal.

Everett crouched down slightly.

"What is your name?"

The little girl looked at him.

"Clara."

Everett nodded.

"Clara..."

He struggled with the next question.

Because he already knew the answer.

But he needed to hear it.

"Who is your father?"

Elena's expression changed immediately.

"Everett."

But Clara answered before her mother could stop her.

"My daddy's name was Thomas."

The courtroom froze.

Everett stood slowly.

Thomas.

Not just his brother.

His brother was her father.

His brother had a daughter.

A daughter who called him Grandpa Everett.

A daughter whose existence had been hidden from him.

Everett looked at Elena.

"You had a child with Thomas?"

Elena's eyes filled with tears.

"Yes."

"Why?"

The question came out broken.

Not angry.

Just hurt.

"Why hide this from me?"

Elena looked at Clara.

"Because Thomas told me to."

Everett's expression changed.

"Thomas?"

She nodded.

"He said if you knew the truth, they would come after you."

"Who?"

Elena didn't answer.

Everett stepped closer.

"Who was he afraid of?"

Elena opened her mouth.

But before she could speak, every phone in the courtroom suddenly vibrated.

The sound echoed through the room.

One after another.

Dozens of devices.

Lawyers.

Spectators.

Court officers.

Everyone looked down.

Everett's assistant checked his phone.

Her face immediately changed.

"Judge..."

Everett looked at her.

"What is it?"

She hesitated.

Then slowly turned the screen toward him.

A video had been sent to every person inside the courtroom.

No sender.

No number.

Just one title.

THE TRUTH ABOUT EVERETT SLOAN

Everett felt a cold feeling move through him.

Someone wanted everyone to see this.

He looked at Elena.

She looked terrified.

"Don't open it."

Everett stared.

"Why?"

Her voice dropped.

"Because whoever sent it wants you to remember something."

The courtroom watched as Everett took the phone.

He pressed play.

The screen showed a dark room.

The image was old.

Grainy.

A man sat in front of the camera.

Everett recognized him instantly.

Thomas.

His brother.

Alive.

Older.

Tired.

Afraid.

Everett stopped breathing.

Thomas looked directly into the camera.

"If you're watching this..."

His voice cracked.

"...then they failed to erase everything."

Everett stepped closer.

The entire courtroom watched.

Thomas continued.

"Everett, I know you hate me."

A pause.

"But before you judge me, you need to understand what happened."

Everett's hands tightened.

Thomas looked away from the camera.

Like he was struggling with whether he should continue.

"I didn't disappear because I wanted to."

Another pause.

"I disappeared because I found out who was controlling everything."

The screen flickered.

Thomas leaned closer.

"And the person who destroyed our family..."

Everett held his breath.

"...was sitting next to you the entire time."

The video stopped.

The courtroom went silent.

Everyone looked around.

Trying to understand.

Trying to guess.

Everett looked at Elena.

Then Daniel.

Then the people in the gallery.

Someone had spent twenty years hiding the truth.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

A court officer suddenly walked toward the entrance.

"Judge Sloan."

Everett turned.

The officer looked nervous.

"There is someone outside asking to see you."

Everett stared.

"Who?"

The officer swallowed.

"He said his name is Thomas Sloan."

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the man standing outside the courtroom door...

was supposed to be dead.

Everett slowly walked toward the door.

His hand reached for the handle.

The door opened from the other side.

May you like

And a voice whispered:

"Hello, brother."
