Chapter 6 - The Last Secret

Dominic did not remember leaving the pier.
He remembered the car door.
The road.
Sophia beside him.
Then the mansion.
The front door stood open.
Isabella waited in the foyer.
“Where is she?”
“I turned around for seconds.”
Dominic’s face hardened.
“Who was here?”
“No one.”
“Someone took her.”
Sophia moved toward Isabella.
“What happened?”
Isabella shook.
“Lily wanted water. I went into the kitchen. When I came back, the terrace door was open.”
Dominic rushed outside.
A small red ribbon lay on the stone path.
Lily’s.
Sophia picked it up.
Her hands trembled.
Dominic called Marco.
“Trace Salvatore’s last message.”
Marco answered from the hospital.
“Already doing it.”
Minutes later, Elena identified the number.
It belonged to a private phone registered under a shell company.
The company’s owner stunned everyone.
Isabella Moretti.
Dominic slowly turned toward his mother.
She looked confused.
“No.”
“The number is yours.”
“I don’t have another phone.”
Sophia stared.
“Who has access to your accounts?”
Isabella’s face changed.
“My attorney.”
“What attorney?”
“Charles Wynn.”
Dominic knew him.
Family lawyer.
Sixty-eight.
Quiet.
Trusted.
He had handled Moretti legal affairs for twenty years.
Elena searched her files.
Then froze.
“Charles Wynn’s real name is Carlo Salvatori.”
Dominic looked at her.
“Salvatori?”
“Salvatore’s son.”
Silence.
Isabella sat down.
“He told me his family was from Boston.”
“He lied.”
Dominic clenched his jaw.
“Where would he take Lily?”
Sophia looked at the ribbon.
Then remembered something.
“There’s one place.”
The old Bellini house.
Sophia’s childhood home had been abandoned for years.
They arrived before sunrise.
The front door was unlocked.
Dominic entered first.
A child’s voice came from upstairs.
“Mommy?”
Sophia nearly ran.
Dominic stopped her.
“Wait.”
He moved ahead.
Charles Wynn stood inside the bedroom holding Lily.
A gun rested against her side.
Dominic froze.
“Put her down.”
Charles smiled.
“You look like your father.”
Lily was crying silently.
Dominic kept his voice calm.
“Lily, look at me.”
She did.
“Remember my promise?”
She nodded.
“I’m taking you home.”
Charles laughed.
“You always were arrogant.”
Sophia stepped into view.
“Take me instead.”
“No.”
Charles looked at her.
“You caused this.”
“I found a ledger.”
“You destroyed my family.”
“Your father destroyed your family.”
Charles’s expression twisted.
“Salvatore spent his life protecting what belonged to us.”
Dominic moved one step closer.
The gun pressed harder against Lily.
“Stop.”
Dominic stopped.
“What do you want?”
Charles tossed documents onto the floor.
“The Moretti trust.”
“Take it.”
Sophia looked at him.
Dominic continued.
“You want the money? Take every dollar.”
Charles stared.
“You’d give away everything?”
“For her?”
Dominic looked at Lily.
“Yes.”
Charles smiled.
“That’s why you’ll never be your father.”
Dominic answered quietly.
“I finally understand that’s a good thing.”
Charles’s face hardened.
“You sign first.”
Dominic stepped toward the table.
He picked up the pen.
Sophia watched.
Then Lily looked at Charles.
“My teddy bear.”
“What?”
“I dropped him.”
Charles glanced down instinctively.
Lily bit his hand.
He shouted.
Dominic moved.
Sophia grabbed Lily.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
Dominic slammed Charles against the wall.
The weapon fell.
Elena rushed in with police officers.
Charles was arrested.
Sophia sank to the floor holding Lily.
Dominic knelt beside them.
Lily reached for him.
He wrapped both mother and daughter in his arms.
For the first time in four years, Sophia did not pull away.
Later that morning, the mansion felt different.
No guests.
No music.
No secrets pretending to be celebration.
Dominic sat beside Lily on the staircase.
The exact place where he had found her.
Sophia approached.
Lily had fallen asleep against his arm.
“She trusts you.”
Dominic looked at his daughter.
“I don’t deserve that yet.”
Sophia sat beside him.
“She doesn’t know about deserving. She knows who shows up.”
Dominic looked at Sophia.
“I didn’t show up for four years.”
“You didn’t know.”
“But now I do.”
He hesitated.
“I’m leaving the organization.”
Sophia stared.
“What?”
“My father wanted me out.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
“I want out.”
He looked around the mansion.
“I spent years thinking power meant no one could take anything from me.”
His gaze returned to Lily.
“They took everything anyway.”
Sophia’s eyes filled.
“What will you do?”
“Legitimate businesses. Sell whatever needs selling. Cooperate with the investigation.”
“That could be dangerous.”
“I know.”
“And your men?”
“Those who want legitimate work get it. Those who don’t leave.”
Sophia studied him.
“You’ve thought about this.”
“For about six hours.”
She almost laughed.
Dominic smiled for the first time that night.
Then his expression grew serious.
“I’m not asking you to forgive me.”
“You didn’t force me away.”
“I’m still not asking.”
“Good.”
He looked surprised.
Sophia continued.
“You don’t get four lost years back with one speech.”
“I know.”
“You don’t become Lily’s father overnight.”
“I know.”
“And I don’t become the woman I was before.”
“I don’t want you to.”
Sophia looked at him.
“I want to know who you are now.”
He meant it.
Sophia’s eyes softened.
Then Isabella entered.
She stopped several feet away.
“Dominic.”
He looked at her.
His anger had not disappeared.
Neither had his gratitude.
“You lied to me for four years.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me search.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lily was mine.”
Isabella began crying.
“Yes.”
Dominic stood carefully without waking Lily.
“You should have trusted me.”
“I know.”
“Why didn’t you?”
“Because your father died trusting the wrong person.”
She looked at Sophia.
“I could not lose you too.”
Dominic’s voice lowered.
“You almost lost me anyway.”
Isabella nodded.
“I know.”
There was no easy forgiveness.
But there was truth now.
That was a beginning.
Marco arrived from the hospital.
Dominic stood.
“Antonio?”
“Alive.”
Dominic exhaled.
“He’ll need surgery.”
Marco looked toward Lily.
Then Sophia.
“Worth it.”
Dominic nodded.
“Tell him when he wakes up that the door is closed.”
Marco understood.
Hours later, federal agents arrived.
Dominic surrendered his father’s documents.
The Moretti network began collapsing.
Accounts were frozen.
Corrupt officials were arrested.
Years of secrecy cracked open.
Dominic cooperated.
Not because he had become weak.
Because he was finally choosing what his father had chosen too late.
Freedom.
That afternoon, Dominic returned to his study.
Sophia followed.
He opened the safe.
Inside was his copy of the photograph from Lake Como.
He placed Lily’s copy beside it.
Identical.
Except Sophia had written something different on Dominic’s.
D.M. — always.
Dominic smiled sadly.
Sophia touched the handwriting.
“I meant it.”
“Did you?”
“Yes.”
“Even when you disappeared?”
“Especially then.”
They looked at each other.
Four years stood between them.
Love had survived.
Trust had not.
Trust would require work.
Dominic was willing.
Sophia seemed willing too.
Then Marco entered quickly.
“Boss.”
Dominic looked up.
“What?”
“We found something in Salvatore’s files.”
He placed a sealed envelope on the desk.
Dominic’s name was written across it.
But the handwriting was not Salvatore’s.
It was Giovanni Moretti’s.
Dominic opened the envelope.
Inside was one photograph.
A photograph of Dominic’s father.
Alive.
Taken two years after his supposed death.
On the back was a single sentence:
Your father survived the first attempt.
Dominic looked up.
Marco’s face had gone pale.
“There’s more.”
A knock came from the study door.
Three slow knocks.
Dominic reached for the handle.
May you like
A man on the other side said:
“Son.”
