Chapter 3 - The Man Behind the Door

The man standing in the doorway did not look like a stranger.

That was the first thing Adrian noticed.

He wasn't wearing a mask.

He wasn't carrying a weapon.

He wasn't trying to hide.

He simply stood there, holding Lily's stuffed rabbit in his hand as if he belonged in that hospital room.

And somehow, that made Adrian more afraid.

Because dangerous people usually hid their intentions.

This man didn't.

He looked completely confident.

Lily immediately moved closer to Adrian.

Her small fingers tightened around his hand.

"Mama..." she whispered.

Sofia's face turned pale.

"No."

The fear in her voice was different this time.

Not confusion.

Not worry.

Pure recognition.

The man smiled slightly.

"Hello, Sofia."

Sofia pushed herself higher against the hospital bed.

"How did you find us?"

The man's eyes moved toward Lily.

"I didn't find you."

He looked at Adrian.

"He did."

Adrian's expression hardened.

"Who are you?"

The man ignored the question.

Instead, he looked at the stuffed rabbit in his hand.

"Interesting, isn't it?"

He turned the rabbit around.

"The one thing Sofia refused to leave behind."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Put that down."

The man smiled.

"You're protective of her already."

Adrian's eyes narrowed.

"What did you do to my family?"

The man's smile disappeared.

For the first time, his expression became serious.

"Your family was destroyed long before you realized it."

The words hit Adrian like a punch.

He wanted to attack him.

He wanted answers.

But Lily was beside him.

And he couldn't risk frightening her.

Sofia looked at Adrian.

"Don't listen to him."

The man laughed quietly.

"Still protecting him."

He walked closer.

Sofia immediately grabbed Lily's arm.

"Stay away from my daughter."

The man stopped.

"Your daughter?"

He looked at Adrian.

"That's what you've been told?"

Adrian's stomach tightened.

"What are you talking about?"

The man looked at Lily.

Then at Sofia.

Then back at Adrian.

"Ask her who Lily's father really is."

The room went silent.

Lily looked confused.

"Mama?"

Sofia closed her eyes.

Adrian felt like the ground beneath him had disappeared.

"What did you say?"

The man placed the rabbit on the table.

"Three years ago, your wife discovered something she wasn't supposed to know."

Adrian's breathing became heavier.

"My wife died in an accident."

The man tilted his head.

"Did she?"

The question was simple.

But it carried years of pain.

Adrian remembered the phone call.

The police report.

The funeral.

Everything had been explained.

Everything had been settled.

At least, that's what he believed.

The man reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small device.

A digital recorder.

He placed it on the table.

"Your wife recorded this the night before she died."

Adrian stared at it.

His hands slowly formed fists.

"Why do you have that?"

"Because she trusted the wrong person."

Sofia suddenly spoke.

"Stop."

Her voice shook.

"You promised you would never show him."

The man's eyes moved toward her.

"I promised I would keep the truth hidden until the right time."

He looked at Adrian.

"The right time is now."

Adrian grabbed the recorder.

"Play it."

The man smiled.

"You're sure?"

"Play it."

The man pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice appeared.

A voice Adrian hadn't heard in three years.

A voice he thought he would never hear again.

"Adrian..."

His entire body froze.

It was her.

His wife.

The woman he buried.

The woman he cried for every night.

The recording continued.

"If you are hearing this, it means they failed to stop you."

Adrian looked at Sofia.

Then the man.

His heart was racing.

"Who are they?"

The recording continued.

"I need you to understand something. The story they gave you about that night was not true."

Adrian covered his mouth.

The room became painfully quiet.

His wife's voice continued.

"Lily is alive because I trusted someone to protect her."

Adrian looked at the little girl.

Lily looked back at him.

Confused.

Scared.

The recording continued.

"But the person who tried to take her from me was someone inside our own circle."

Adrian's eyes widened.

Someone inside his own circle.

Someone close.

Someone he trusted.

Then the recording suddenly stopped.

The man turned off the device.

Adrian looked at him.

"Why did you stop it?"

"Because the rest is dangerous."

Adrian stepped forward.

"Turn it back on."

The man didn't move.

"You're not ready."

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

"I lost my wife."

His voice became darker.

"I spent three years believing she was gone."

He pointed toward Lily.

"I found a child who was supposed to be dead according to everyone around me."

His eyes filled with anger.

"You don't get to decide what I'm ready for."

The man stared at him.

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

Then Sofia whispered:

"Adrian..."

He turned.

Sofia was crying.

"I wanted to tell you."

"Then why didn't you?"

"Because I knew what would happen."

"What?"

Sofia looked at the hospital door.

"They would come for Lily."

Adrian followed her eyes.

The hallway outside was empty.

But suddenly, he understood.

Someone had been watching.

Someone had allowed him to find Lily.

Someone had wanted him involved.

"Who is he?" Adrian asked.

Sofia looked at the man.

Her voice was barely audible.

"His name is Daniel."

Adrian looked at him.

"Daniel what?"

The man didn't answer.

Sofia did.

"Daniel Hayes."

Adrian froze.

That name meant something.

Not personally.

Professionally.

Daniel Hayes was the man who had handled the investigation into his wife's death.

The lead investigator.

The person who told Adrian there was nothing suspicious.

The person who closed the case.

Adrian slowly looked at Daniel.

"You were the one who told me it was an accident."

Daniel didn't deny it.

"I was."

Adrian felt his anger rising.

"You lied to me."

Daniel looked down.

"I protected you."

"From what?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because suddenly, the hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then went completely dark.

Lily screamed.

Sofia grabbed her daughter.

Adrian immediately moved between them and the door.

Emergency lights turned on.

Red.

Slow.

Flashing.

Then Adrian noticed something.

The hospital room window was open.

Snow was blowing inside.

Someone had climbed in.

Daniel looked at the empty window.

His face changed.

For the first time, Adrian saw real fear in him.

"He's here."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he walked toward the window.

On the snowy floor beneath it was a single object.

A photograph.

Adrian picked it up.

His hands began shaking.

Because the picture showed him.

His wife.

Lily.

And another person standing beside them.

A person Adrian thought had been dead for three years.

On the back of the photograph were five words written in fresh ink:

"Ask your daughter who I am."

May you like

Then Lily looked at the doorway and whispered a name Adrian never expected to hear...

"Grandpa."
