Chapter 5 - The Price on Emma's Life

Nobody moved.
The alarm screamed for three more seconds.
Then stopped.
Silence returned.
Adrian stared at the speaker.
Emma looked at Rosa.
“That was Antonio?”
Rosa nodded.
“He's dead,” Adrian said.
Charles looked almost amused.
“So was your wife.”
Adrian turned on him.
“One more clever sentence and—”
“Threats later. Basement now.”
Vincent was rushed to a secure medical room.
The bullet had entered near his shoulder.
He might survive.
Adrian gathered his remaining security team.
The basement door was hidden beneath the main staircase.
Emma expected a wine cellar.
Instead she found reinforced steel.
Fingerprint reader.
Mechanical lock.
A keypad installed decades earlier.
Rosa held up trembling hands.
“Antonio never let anyone enter.”
Adrian touched the scanner.
Green.
The keypad requested six digits.
He tried his father's birthday.
Wrong.
Lucas's birthday.
Wrong.
Emma looked at the brass key.
“Try David's death date.”
Adrian looked at her.
She hated the suggestion.
But it worked.
The steel door unlocked.
Inside was a narrow stairway.
Adrian went first.
Emma followed despite his objection.
Charles came behind her under guard.
Margaret stayed upstairs with Lucas and Noah.
At the bottom waited another door.
No lock.
Adrian opened it.
Lights activated automatically.
Emma stopped.
The basement contained a fully equipped archive room.
Servers.
File cabinets.
Old surveillance monitors.
On one wall were photographs.
Hundreds.
Politicians.
Police officers.
Business leaders.
Families.
Children.
Emma found her own photograph.
Age twelve.
School uniform.
Another at sixteen.
Another at college graduation.
Another taken two weeks earlier outside Bellini's.
Someone had watched her for years.
Adrian stood beside photographs of Lucas.
His expression became lethal.
Charles whispered, “Antonio knew.”
“Knew what?” Emma demanded.
A monitor flickered.
Static appeared.
Then an old man.
Antonio Vale.
Recorded, not alive.
The relief was strange.
Adrian's father looked directly into the camera.
“If Adrian is seeing this, then the system has activated because David Carter's archive has been opened.”
Emma moved closer.
Antonio continued.
“I built many ugly things in my life. The worst was not the Vale organization. The worst was believing I could control the men who hid behind legitimate institutions.”
Charles looked away.
“They approached me twenty-three years ago. Judges. Officers. Federal contractors. They offered protection. In return, they wanted access to my intelligence.”
Antonio paused.
“I agreed.”
Adrian clenched his jaw.
“The partnership became something else. Children became pressure points. Families became currency.”
Emma whispered, “The network.”
Antonio continued.
“David Carter discovered it. Elena discovered it later.”
The video changed.
A photograph appeared.
David.
Elena.
And a baby.
Emma leaned closer.
The baby was not Lucas.
Antonio's recorded voice said, “David made one mistake. He believed evidence would be enough.”
Another image appeared.
Emma as an infant.
Antonio stood beside her mother.
And holding baby Emma—
Antonio.
Emma stopped breathing.
“Why is he holding me?”
Charles whispered, “Because you're family.”
Adrian looked at him.
“What?”
Charles closed his eyes.
Antonio's recording continued.
“Adrian, there is something I never told you. David Carter was not born David Carter.”
Emma stared.
“He was born Davide Vale.”
Adrian whispered, “No.”
“My younger brother.”
Emma stepped backward.
“No.”
Antonio continued without mercy.
“Your uncle.”
Emma looked at Adrian.
The relationship struck them simultaneously.
David Carter had been Antonio Vale's brother.
Which made Emma—
Adrian's cousin.
Not close enough to explain everything, but close enough to tie her by blood to the family she had never known.
“My father changed his name?”
Rosa nodded from the doorway.
“He wanted out.”
Emma couldn't speak.
Antonio explained that David had rejected the criminal family at nineteen.
He changed his name.
Went to college.
Eventually returned temporarily when Antonio begged him to help clean legitimate accounts.
Then David discovered the network.
“He tried to destroy what I had helped create,” Antonio said. “I tried to help him. We failed.”
Emma's eyes burned.
“Who killed him?”
The recording seemed almost to answer.
“The man responsible for David's death is called The Broker.”
A list of aliases appeared.
No photograph.
Antonio continued.
“The Broker never leads publicly. He places people beside powerful families. Advisers. Spouses. Drivers. Security.”
Emma looked at Charles.
He said, “Not me.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because I spent twenty years trying to become him.”
That was somehow worse.
“You worked for him.”
“Yes.”
“Did you order Dad stopped?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because I thought David would expose everything and get Margaret and you killed.”
“So you sent men after him?”
Charles looked ashamed.
“I told them to take the files.”
“And they killed him.”
“Yes.”
Emma slapped him.
Hard.
Nobody stopped her.
Charles touched his cheek.
“I deserved that.”
“You deserve worse.”
“Yes.”
Antonio's recording continued.
“Elena identified The Broker.”
Adrian moved closer.
“Name him.”
“But before she could tell me, she died.”
Adrian slammed his fist into the desk.
Emma flinched.
The recording switched to Elena.
She looked frightened.
“If you're watching this, Adrian, I didn't make it.”
Adrian went perfectly still.
Elena smiled sadly.
“I need you to know I loved you. None of that was an assignment.”
Adrian looked away.
Emma wanted to give him privacy, but nobody moved.
“I found The Broker. I hid his identity because he has access to Lucas. If I put his name in a file, he'll know.”
Adrian whispered, “Then where?”
Elena held up a children's storybook.
“The answer is where our son hears the same story every night.”
The video ended.
Adrian turned.
“Lucas's room.”
They ran upstairs.
Lucas's favorite book sat on his nightstand.
A worn picture book about a lion and a little prince.
Adrian flipped through it.
Nothing.
Emma took it.
“Same story every night.”
She examined the spine.
A page near the center was thicker.
She peeled two layers apart.
Inside was a photograph.
The Broker.
Everyone stared.
Emma recognized him first.
“No.”
Adrian's face lost color.
The man was older now, but unmistakable.
United States Attorney Raymond Cole.
A celebrated prosecutor.
Television regular.
The man publicly credited with dismantling organized crime operations across three states.
Adrian laughed once.
Coldly.
“The man who built his career prosecuting families like mine.”
Charles nodded.
“Because he controlled which families survived.”
Emma looked at the photograph.
Then at Charles.
“You worked for him.”
“For years.”
“Does he know we're here?”
“He knows everything.”
Adrian's phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Raymond Cole's voice filled the room.
“Adrian.”
Nobody spoke.
“You finally found Elena's little photograph.”
Adrian's hand tightened.
“You killed her.”
“I didn't touch her.”
“You ordered it.”
“That is closer.”
Lucas was standing in the doorway.
Adrian quickly lowered the phone volume.
Too late.
The boy had heard.
His face crumpled.
Emma went to him.
Cole continued.
“You have something that belongs to me.”
“The files?”
“Emma.”
Everyone froze.
Emma looked at the phone.
Cole said, “Antonio never understood David's real value. David created access keys to every account and archive the network ever used. Those keys were inherited.”
Emma whispered, “By me.”
“Precisely.”
“I don't know anything.”
“You don't need to. Your biometrics are enough.”
Adrian stepped between Emma and the phone as though Cole could somehow reach through it.
“You're not getting near her.”
Cole laughed.
“There is the problem, Adrian. I already am.”
A loud crash came from the kitchen.
Guards shouted.
Adrian pushed Lucas toward Rosa.
“Safe room. Now.”
Emma grabbed Lucas.
They moved.
Then Rosa stopped.
Her hand went to her throat.
A red laser dot appeared on her chest.
Emma froze.
A second dot appeared on Adrian.
A third—
On Lucas.
Cole's voice came through the speaker.
“Choose carefully.”
Adrian's face became stone.
“What do you want?”
“Emma Carter at Pier Nine.”
“No.”
“Then I begin removing people you love.”
Emma looked at Lucas.
At Rosa.
At her mother.
At Adrian.
She already knew what she was going to do.
Adrian saw it.
“Don't.”
Emma backed away.
“I'm sorry.”
“Emma.”
She ran.
Not toward the safe room.
Toward the side entrance.
Adrian shouted her name.
Emma reached the door.
Unlocked it.
And found a black sedan already waiting outside.
The rear window lowered.
Raymond Cole sat inside.
May you like
He smiled.
“Hello, Emma.”
