Chapter 6 - The Night Rowan House Turned Against Him

Caleb read the message without blinking.
Elise expected denial.
Instead he said:
"I did."
Jonah stared at him.
"What?"
"Not intentionally."
Eight years of silence finally broke.
Caleb and Adrian had fought in the east wing.
Adrian accused their father of hiding financial crimes.
Caleb accused Adrian of stealing.
A lamp was knocked over during the argument.
The shade caught.
Caleb tried to extinguish it.
The fire spread faster than either expected.
Adrian dragged Caleb from the first room before disappearing back inside for evidence.
Part of the structure collapsed.
Caleb never saw him again.
"I thought I killed him."
Elise understood the weight he'd carried.
"That's why you never challenged the official story."
Caleb nodded.
"Guilt made it easy to accept."
The house suddenly went dark.
Not emergency lighting.
Everything.
Jonah swore.
A generator should have activated.
It didn't.
Then Caleb's wheelchair stopped responding.
Elise's pulse jumped.
"Manual release."
Caleb activated it.
Nothing.
Someone had disabled the backup chair too.
A smell reached Elise.
Not smoke.
Fuel?
No.
Solvent.
"Move away from the foyer."
Jonah began helping with the chair.
Caleb snapped, "Don't push me."
Elise crouched.
"Caleb."
He looked at her.
"This isn't about pride."
His jaw tightened.
"Release the brake manually."
He showed her where.
Together they disengaged the system.
The chair rolled.
Elise took the handles.
"Tell me where."
"Service courtyard."
They moved through the dark.
No gunfire.
No explosions.
Just alarms failing one by one and doors locking remotely.
Someone had seized the mansion's control system.
Grant.
Or Voss.
Elise pushed harder.
The chair was brutally heavy.
Caleb tried to assist through the rims where possible.
"Leave me," he said.
"No."
"Elise."
"No."
"You can move faster alone."
"Then stop talking and make yourself lighter."
Even in the darkness she heard his incredulous laugh.
They reached the service corridor.
A locked fire door blocked them.
Jonah searched for manual access.
Elise noticed scratches near the bottom hinge.
Fresh.
"Not that door."
Jonah turned.
"What?"
"They expect us to use it."
She pointed toward the laundry passage.
They changed direction.
Seconds later, a heavy security shutter dropped across the corridor they'd abandoned.
Caleb looked at Elise.
"How did you know?"
"Scratches."
They reached the courtyard.
Police and private security reinforcements arrived soon afterward.
Grant was arrested trying to leave through a maintenance tunnel.
Voss remained missing.
Under questioning, Grant admitted disabling systems.
But he insisted Voss had ordered everything.
The floor.
The wheelchair.
The cloned credentials.
Framing Elise.
Voss needed Caleb frightened enough to reopen the east-wing evidence.
Grant's job was to create pressure without killing him.
But the silicone trap could have caused serious harm.
Grant claimed that hadn't been the plan.
Caleb didn't believe him.
Neither did Elise.
Then Grant said something stranger.
"Voss isn't the one you should worry about."
Caleb stared.
"Who?"
Grant laughed bitterly.
"Your brother."
Adrian had orchestrated Elise's hiring.
He had sent the messages.
He had pushed Caleb toward the hidden evidence.
Voss believed he controlled Adrian.
Grant believed the opposite.
Elise thought of Adrian smiling in the photograph.
"Where is he?"
Grant refused to answer.
Until Elise noticed mud on his shoes.
Red clay.
Rowan House grounds had pale gravel and dark soil.
But there was red clay somewhere nearby.
Martha knew where.
The old greenhouse.
Built on imported clay fill decades earlier.
They found Voss's abandoned car there.
No Voss.
No Adrian.
Inside the greenhouse was a table.
Two chairs.
And the stolen drive.
Caleb looked at it.
"Too easy."
Elise agreed.
A recorder sat beside it.
She pressed play.
Adrian's voice.
"Caleb, if you're hearing this, Elise did what I believed she would."
Elise hated hearing her name.
"You used her," Caleb said to the empty greenhouse.
The recording continued.
"I needed someone you couldn't intimidate, buy, or predict."
Elise folded her arms.
"He got one thing right."
Caleb almost smiled.
Then Adrian's voice changed.
"Voss caused the financial theft. Father discovered it. Voss manipulated us against each other. The fire gave him an opportunity. Father hid me because Voss believed I had died."
Caleb stared at the recorder.
"Why stay hidden?"
Adrian answered as if hearing the question.
"Because I discovered Voss wasn't working alone."
Silence.
Then:
"The second person still lives inside Rowan House."
Elise looked at Caleb.
Footsteps sounded behind the greenhouse door.
Slow.
Measured.
Someone turned the handle.
May you like
And Martha whispered:
"Oh, God. I know who it is."
