Chapter 2 - Someone Touched the Chair

Elise didn't answer.

Jonah moved between her and the doorway.

"Who is in there?"

Silence.

The phone stopped ringing.

Caleb watched the darkness with an expression so controlled that Elise found it more unsettling than anger.

"Lights."

A guard hit the switch.

The charging room illuminated.

Empty.

Jonah entered first.

Elise remained beside Caleb.

A phone lay on the workbench.

Cheap.

Black.

Disposable.

Jonah picked it up with a cloth.

"One outgoing call."

"To whom?" Caleb asked.

Jonah looked at Elise.

"Her."

Elise's stomach dropped.

"My number?"

"Yes."

"Nobody here has my personal number."

"Martha does," Caleb said.

"Human resources does."

Jonah added, "Security."

Elise looked at him.

"That's comforting."

The phone contained nothing else.

No contacts.

No messages.

No identifying data.

But beneath it sat something worse.

A tiny metal component.

The independent wheelchair technician arrived twenty-three minutes later.

Dr. Aaron Vale wasn't a doctor of medicine, he explained twice, but Caleb apparently insisted on calling everyone by their proper title.

Vale examined the caster.

His expression became serious.

"This retaining fastener has been loosened."

Caleb's jaw tightened.

"Could servicing cause that?"

"Servicing should prevent it."

"Could it happen accidentally?"

"Possible."

Elise heard the careful language.

"But?"

Vale looked at Jonah.

"I wouldn't expect to see this immediately after a professional service."

He examined the component found beside the phone.

Then went silent.

Caleb noticed.

"What is it?"

Vale held it up.

"A matching locking insert."

Nobody spoke.

The implication settled over the room.

The contaminated floor.

The loosened wheel.

The dead camera.

Three abnormalities in one morning.

Caleb turned to Jonah.

"Get me the technician."

Jonah made the call.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

The company dispatcher finally answered.

The technician assigned to Rowan House that morning had never arrived.

Jonah frowned.

"Your system shows him checking in."

"Impossible," the dispatcher said through the speaker. "He's home sick."

Elise felt the hairs rise on her arms.

Caleb looked at Jonah.

"Then who serviced my chair?"

Security footage from the front entrances showed nobody unexpected.

The service entrance was different.

Its camera had frozen for fourteen minutes.

The electronic access log showed a valid employee credential.

Martha Bell.

Head housekeeper.

Elise stared at the screen.

"No."

Jonah glanced at her.

"You've known her three days."

"And you've known her twelve years. Which of us sounds more frightened by that name?"

Jonah didn't answer.

Martha was found upstairs.

She had been inventorying linens with two employees for nearly an hour.

Three witnesses confirmed it.

Her access card was still clipped to her uniform.

Jonah examined it.

Cloned credential.

Caleb watched everything.

He didn't accuse Martha.

He didn't accuse anyone.

That worried Elise more.

By afternoon, Rowan House had become a quiet prison.

Employees were interviewed individually.

Phones were checked with consent.

Access records were reviewed.

Elise returned to work because she didn't know what else to do.

At four, she was cleaning the library when Caleb rolled through the doorway in a backup chair that had been inspected twice.

"You shouldn't be working."

She looked at him.

"I'm being paid to."

"You stopped me from crossing that floor."

"And?"

"And you're dusting."

"The shelves didn't become innocent because somebody tampered with your wheelchair."

Caleb studied her.

"Why didn't you leave?"

"Doors are locked."

"I'd let you leave."

She continued wiping the shelf.

"Then whoever did this learns I scared easily."

"You do understand you could simply take your wages and go?"

"What about the bonus?"

His expression changed.

"You're worried about four thousand dollars right now?"

"People who have enough money always find other people's four thousand dollars funny."

Caleb went still.

Elise regretted it immediately.

But he surprised her.

"Fair."

She looked at him.

He nodded toward the chair beside him.

"Walk with me."

"Where?"

"Kitchen."

"Why?"

"I'm hungry."

"You have staff."

"I currently distrust half my staff."

"And you trust me?"

"No."

Elise nodded.

"At least you're consistent."

In the kitchen, she made him a sandwich because every cook was being interviewed.

Caleb watched her.

"You worked hotels."

"Nine years."

"Why leave?"

"Didn't."

"Meaning?"

"They eliminated my position."

"And the eviction?"

Elise stopped cutting the sandwich.

"Employment file?"

"No."

"Then that's none of your business."

He accepted that.

That mattered.

She placed the plate before him.

Caleb took one bite.

"This is terrible."

"It's turkey."

"It's dry."

"Then survive."

He stared at her.

And laughed.

It was the first genuine laugh she had heard from him.

For a few seconds, the mansion felt normal.

Then Martha rushed into the kitchen.

Her face was white.

"Mr. Rowan."

Caleb's expression instantly reset.

"What?"

"We're missing a uniform."

Elise turned.

"What kind?"

Martha looked at her.

"Housekeeping."

The room became silent.

"Which size?" Elise asked.

Martha hesitated.

"Yours."

Elise put down the knife.

Jonah entered moments later.

They searched the staff locker room.

Elise's spare uniform was gone.

So were an apron and shoes.

Someone had taken enough clothing to resemble her from a distance.

Caleb looked toward Jonah.

"The camera?"

Jonah's face told them before he spoke.

Footage had been recovered from the service corridor.

At 11:27, a heavyset woman in a housekeeping uniform appeared for less than three seconds.

Her face was turned away.

Her hair resembled Elise's.

Her build resembled Elise's.

She used Martha's cloned credential.

Then disappeared into the charging room.

Elise stared at the image.

"They're framing me."

Caleb didn't respond.

Jonah enlarged the frame.

Something protruded from the woman's apron.

A folded white cloth.

Elise felt every eye turn toward her.

Her cleaning cloths were white.

Jonah spoke carefully.

"Elise, I'm going to need your locker key."

She handed it over.

Caleb watched her face.

"You expected this."

"No."

"You don't look surprised."

"I'm too angry to look surprised."

Jonah opened her locker.

Uniforms.

Shoes.

A paperback novel.

Two protein bars.

A cheap purse.

Then he stopped.

At the bottom was a small plastic bottle.

Citrus solvent.

The exact substance found on the marble.

Martha covered her mouth.

Elise stared at it.

"That's not mine."

Jonah lifted the bottle with gloves.

"I believe you."

She looked at him.

"You do?"

"Because whoever planted this made a mistake."

He turned the bottle.

A label was attached underneath.

Inventory control.

The bottle had been issued from a storage room Elise had never been authorized to enter.

Caleb looked almost satisfied.

Not because they had solved anything.

Because somebody had finally made an error.

Jonah scanned the inventory code.

The system produced a name.

He read it once.

Then again.

Caleb's expression changed.

"Say it."

Jonah looked up.

"The bottle was checked out yesterday under my credentials."

Nobody moved.

Jonah stared at the screen.

"I didn't take it."

Caleb said nothing.

"Caleb."

Still nothing.

Jonah stepped forward.

"I've protected you for eleven years."

"I know."

"You think I did this?"

"I think someone wants me to."

Elise looked between them.

That was when her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

One photograph.

She opened it.

Her apartment building.

Taken that afternoon.

Then another message appeared.

WE KNOW WHY YOU NEED THE BONUS.

Elise's face went cold.

Caleb saw it.

"What?"

She turned the screen toward him.

Another message arrived before he could speak.

LEAVE ROWAN HOUSE TONIGHT.

Then a final photograph loaded.

May you like

It showed Elise entering the mansion three days earlier.

Someone had been watching her from the beginning.
