Chapter 3 - The Man in the Photograph

Claire stared at Daniel.

“Why?”

The bell rang again.

Ryan started downstairs.

Daniel grabbed his arm.

“Don't.”

Ryan jerked free.

“Get your hands off me.”

“Jonathan Vale disappeared four years ago.”

Claire looked at the photograph.

“When?”

Daniel swallowed.

“The night your father died.”

The bell rang a third time.

Nobody moved.

Then Claire's phone buzzed.

UNKNOWN NUMBER.

One message.

DON'T LET MARGARET LEAVE.

Claire's stomach tightened.

“She's already gone.”

Daniel looked toward the open compartment.

“How?”

“There’s another staircase from the east wing.”

Ryan cursed and pulled out his phone.

He called his mother.

Straight to voicemail.

Ashley appeared behind them.

“Where is Mom?”

No one answered.

Claire showed Daniel the message.

“Could this be Vale?”

“Possibly.”

Ryan headed downstairs again.

Claire followed.

“Ryan.”

He stopped.

“You don't control this.”

His laugh was bitter.

“You've made that clear.”

“No. I mean whoever is outside may be connected to my father.”

Ryan turned.

“And I'm supposed to hide upstairs?”

Claire looked at her sling.

“Interesting choice of words.”

His face changed.

She walked past him.

The officer opened the door.

A man stood outside.

Late fifties.

Gray suit.

Silver hair.

No visible threat.

He held an old leather briefcase.

“Claire Lawson?”

“Yes.”

“My name is Jonathan Vale.”

Daniel appeared beside her.

“You're supposed to be dead.”

Vale smiled sadly.

“No. I was supposed to look dead.”

Claire stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because your father asked me to disappear.”

He looked past her.

“Where is Margaret?”

Claire didn't answer.

Vale nodded as though that told him enough.

“We don't have much time.”

Inside the study, Vale opened his briefcase.

He removed documents.

Thomas Lawson had hired him eighteen years earlier as a forensic accountant.

Margaret had once worked for one of Thomas's investment companies.

Long before Ryan met Claire.

That revelation hit Claire hardest.

“You knew my father before I knew Ryan?”

Margaret wasn't there to answer.

Vale nodded.

“She knew exactly who you were.”

Ryan stared at him.

“My mother introduced me to Claire at a charity dinner.”

“Yes.”

Ryan's face slowly changed.

Claire felt sick.

Their meeting hadn't been accidental.

Their marriage?

She couldn't let herself ask yet.

Vale continued.

“Thomas discovered Margaret had been manipulating vendor accounts. He confronted her. She returned the money and resigned. He chose not to prosecute because she had two young children.”

Ashley covered her mouth.

“My mother stole from him?”

“Your mother made unauthorized transfers.”

Ryan shook his head.

“No.”

Vale slid a document across the desk.

Margaret's signature.

A repayment agreement.

Ryan read it.

Then again.

Claire watched something collapse behind his eyes.

For one brief second she almost felt sorry for him.

Then her arm throbbed.

Compassion disappeared.

“Why did Dad meet her before he died?” Claire asked.

Vale looked at her.

“Because she contacted him.”

“Why?”

“She told him you were dating Ryan.”

Claire's heartbeat stopped.

Ryan looked up.

“What?”

“Thomas didn't know Ryan was Margaret's son until Margaret told him.”

Claire remembered her father's strange silence after meeting Ryan.

His questions.

His insistence on the prenuptial agreement.

His warning.

People don't always arrive in your life accidentally, sweetheart.

She had thought he was being overprotective.

“Did he ask me to leave Ryan?”

“No,” Vale said. “He knew that would push you closer to him.”

“So he created Hawthorne.”

“Yes.”

Ryan paced toward the window.

“You're saying my mother engineered our relationship?”

“I don't know.”

“You just implied it.”

“I said Margaret knew Claire's identity before you met.”

Ashley whispered, “Ryan.”

He ignored her.

Vale produced another envelope.

“This was intended for Claire if Margaret ever attempted to access Lawson assets.”

Claire opened it with her left hand.

Her father's handwriting.

Claire,

If you're reading this, I was right to worry and wrong to remain silent.

Her vision blurred.

She kept reading.

He explained Margaret.

The old theft.

The repayment.

His fear that she might use her children to regain access.

Then one final sentence:

Do not assume the child understands the parent's plan.

Claire looked at Ryan.

Her father hadn't known whether Ryan was involved.

Neither did she.

“What about the transfer tonight?” Claire asked.

Vale looked at Evelyn.

She answered.

“Margaret initiated it.”

“Can we prove that?”

“Yes.”

Ashley began crying.

Not theatrically.

Quietly.

“Mom told me Ryan was transferring money for my boutique.”

Ryan stared at her.

“What?”

“She said you had everything arranged.”

“I tried to transfer the 1.8.”

“I know. But she told me you had another source if Claire blocked it.”

Ryan turned toward Claire.

“I didn't know about Hawthorne.”

Claire believed him.

That didn't absolve him.

It merely meant there were multiple betrayals in the room.

“What happens now?” Ashley asked.

Daniel answered.

“The transfer has been frozen.”

“And Mom?”

“That depends on what she does next.”

Vale leaned back.

“There may be something more important.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“Thomas suspected Margaret had help inside his company.”

“Who?”

“I never identified the person.”

He opened his briefcase again.

Empty.

He frowned.

“What?”

Vale searched it.

“No.”

“What are you looking for?”

“A ledger.”

Daniel stood.

“You brought it here?”

“Yes.”

“Where is it?”

Vale looked toward the hallway.

“I had it when I arrived.”

Claire remembered Margaret's disappearance.

But Margaret had left before Vale arrived.

Someone else had taken it.

The officer checked the front entrance.

No sign of forced entry.

Ryan looked around.

“Who else is in the house?”

Claire thought of the dinner guests.

Staff.

Family.

Security.

Too many people.

Evelyn opened the hallway camera feeds.

They watched Vale arrive.

Watched the officer let him inside.

Watched them walk toward the study.

Then Claire saw movement.

A figure behind Vale.

Someone brushed against him.

Three seconds.

Enough to open the briefcase?

Evelyn froze the image.

Ashley leaned closer.

“That can't be right.”

Ryan whispered, “No.”

Claire recognized the man.

He had been sitting at dinner.

Quiet.

Almost invisible.

Ryan's uncle.

Margaret's older brother.

Edward Mercer.

Claire turned toward the dining room.

His chair was empty.

“Where's Edward?”

No answer.

Then the lights went out.

Ashley screamed.

Claire heard footsteps.

A door slammed.

Her phone vibrated.

Another unknown message appeared.

HE HAS THE LEDGER.

Claire typed with one hand.

WHO?

Three dots appeared.

Then disappeared.

Appeared again.

A response arrived.

NOT EDWARD.

Claire stared at the screen.

Another message came immediately.

LOOK BEHIND YOU.

Claire slowly turned.

The study door was moving.

Someone was standing on the other side.

May you like

And Claire heard a familiar voice whisper her name.

“Claire…”
