Chapter 2 - The Account Nobody Knew About

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Ryan recovered first.
“What account?”
Evelyn Shaw didn't answer him.
She looked at Claire.
“Can we speak privately?”
“No,” Ryan said.
Claire turned.
The confidence he had worn at dinner had disappeared.
“This concerns me too.”
Daniel Brooks closed his folder.
“That remains to be determined.”
Ryan laughed once.
“You walk into my home—”
“Claire's home,” Daniel corrected.
Ryan's face tightened.
Margaret stepped forward.
“This is ridiculous.”
Daniel looked at her.
“Margaret Mercer?”
She froze.
“Yes.”
“I believe you already know who I am.”
“No.”
“Thomas Lawson did.”
Claire watched Margaret.
Something about that name had frightened her.
Not Claire's name.
Her father's.
Daniel gestured toward the dining room.
“We should sit.”
Ryan refused.
Claire didn't.
She walked back to the table and lowered herself carefully into her chair.
The others followed.
The dinner suddenly looked grotesque.
Half-empty wine glasses.
Cold roast.
Candles burning peacefully.
Ashley whispered, “What is happening?”
Claire looked at Evelyn.
“The account.”
Evelyn opened her laptop.
“Your father established a private asset-protection trust shortly before his death.”
Claire frowned.
“I know about the Lawson Family Trust.”
“This isn't that trust.”
Evelyn turned the laptop.
“This one was called Hawthorne Holdings.”
Claire stared at the screen.
Balance histories appeared.
Properties.
Investments.
Cash reserves.
Then a number.
$14,820,611.
Ashley inhaled sharply.
Ryan said nothing.
Margaret gripped her wine glass.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“My father never told me.”
“He intended to.”
“What happened?”
Daniel glanced toward Margaret.
“We believe someone convinced him not to.”
Margaret stood.
“I will not sit here while strangers make accusations.”
Claire looked at her.
“Then leave.”
Margaret blinked.
“What?”
“You wanted the east wing.”
Claire's voice remained quiet.
“Now I'm asking you to leave the dining room.”
Ryan slammed his palm against the table.
“Stop talking to my mother like that.”
Daniel immediately stood.
The uniformed officer moved one step closer.
Ryan noticed.
His hand dropped.
Claire's heart hammered.
But she did not look away.
“Sit down, Ryan.”
For the first time in their marriage, he obeyed.
Evelyn continued.
“Hawthorne Holdings remained dormant for years. Then six months ago, someone began making inquiries.”
“Who?”
“We're tracing that.”
Ryan folded his arms.
“This is absurd. Claire knows nothing about investments.”
Evelyn looked at him.
“That doesn't prevent her from owning them.”
Ashley glanced toward Ryan.
Claire noticed.
There it was.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Fear.
“You knew,” Claire said.
Ashley shook her head too quickly.
“No.”
“You knew something.”
“I didn't.”
“Ashley.”
“I said I didn't.”
Claire remembered the $1.8 million transfer.
Suddenly it looked different.
Not a desperate attempt to rescue Ashley's boutique.
A test.
Someone wanted to know how quickly Claire would notice money disappearing.
“What happened twenty minutes ago?” Claire asked.
Evelyn turned the screen again.
“Four hundred and eighty thousand dollars was transferred from a Hawthorne-linked account.”
“To whom?”
“A shell company.”
“Name?”
Evelyn hesitated.
“AM Strategic Ventures.”
Ashley went pale.
Claire stared at her.
“A.M.”
“No.”
“Ashley Mercer.”
“No!”
Ashley stood so quickly her chair struck the wall.
“I don't know anything about that.”
Margaret grabbed her wrist.
“Sit down.”
Ashley stared at her mother.
That was the second moment Claire understood something important.
Ashley was frightened of Margaret too.
She sat.
Ryan rubbed his forehead.
“This has gone far enough.”
Claire ignored him.
“Evelyn, can the transfer be reversed?”
“We've already flagged it.”
“Good.”
Ryan looked at her.
“You planned this.”
Claire turned toward him.
“I planned to protect myself.”
“From your husband?”
Claire glanced at her sling.
Nobody laughed this time.
Ryan's face reddened.
“That was an accident.”
The officer watched him.
Claire said nothing.
Daniel did.
“We have reason to dispute that.”
Ryan's head snapped toward him.
“What does that mean?”
Daniel opened another section of his folder.
“Claire provided security footage.”
Margaret whispered something under her breath.
Ryan stared at Claire.
“You recorded me?”
“No.”
“You—”
“The house did.”
Ryan pushed back from the table.
The officer moved again.
Ryan stopped.
Claire could almost see calculations racing through his head.
“What do you want?” he asked.
Claire looked at him.
It was such a revealing question.
Not: Are you okay?
Not: How did we get here?
Not even: Can we fix this?
What do you want?
As though everything had a price.
“I want the truth.”
“About what?”
“My father's trust.”
Ryan looked genuinely confused.
Claire believed that part.
She turned to Margaret.
Her mother-in-law wasn't confused.
“Why is your name on my father's document?”
Margaret's lips parted.
No answer.
“Why were you with him three days before he died?”
Still nothing.
Ashley looked between them.
“Mom?”
Margaret stood.
“This conversation is finished.”
“No,” Claire said. “It's beginning.”
Margaret reached for her handbag.
Daniel spoke calmly.
“Mrs. Mercer, leaving won't change the document.”
She stopped.
“What exactly are you accusing me of?”
“Nothing yet.”
“Then stop behaving like I'm some criminal.”
Daniel's expression remained neutral.
“I said nothing about criminal conduct.”
That silenced her.
Claire looked down at the document.
Her father's handwriting remained unmistakable.
If Claire ever loses control of the primary estate, activate Hawthorne immediately.
Claire read it twice.
“What did he mean by loses control?”
Daniel leaned forward.
“We don't know.”
Ryan spoke.
“Maybe because Thomas knew she couldn't manage money.”
Claire stared at him.
Evelyn almost looked amused.
Daniel didn't.
“Thomas Lawson left Claire an estate worth approximately thirty-eight million dollars.”
Ryan's expression changed.
Ashley stared.
Margaret slowly turned toward Claire.
Claire herself couldn't speak.
She knew her father had been wealthy.
She had never known that number.
Daniel continued.
“Most assets are protected through structures Ryan cannot access.”
Ryan stood again.
“This is insane.”
Daniel turned another page.
“Except one joint account Claire voluntarily created after marriage.”
The account Ryan had tried to drain.
Claire understood.
Her father had protected her.
Even from decisions she hadn't known she would need protection from.
Margaret suddenly headed toward the hallway.
“Mom?” Ashley called.
Margaret didn't stop.
Claire watched her.
“Where are you going?”
“To get some air.”
Evelyn's phone vibrated again.
She looked down.
“Wait.”
Margaret froze.
Evelyn stared at the screen.
“What?” Claire asked.
“The shell company.”
“What about it?”
“We found its registered contact.”
Ashley whispered, “Who?”
Evelyn slowly lifted her eyes.
“Not Ashley.”
Margaret's hand tightened around her purse.
Ryan looked at his mother.
Claire felt cold.
“Then who?”
Evelyn turned the laptop.
The name appeared.
MARGARET MERCER.
Ashley gasped.
Ryan stared at his mother.
Margaret ran.
She didn't walk.
She ran toward the staircase.
“Mom!” Ryan shouted.
The officer followed.
Claire stood.
Pain shot through her shoulder.
Daniel tried to stop her.
She followed anyway.
Margaret reached the landing.
She disappeared into the east corridor.
Claire knew exactly where she was going.
Her father's old study.
A room Margaret had supposedly never entered.
They reached the hallway seconds later.
The study door stood open.
Margaret was gone.
Ryan stared inside.
“Where is she?”
Claire looked toward the bookcase.
One panel was slightly open.
A hidden compartment her father had shown only to her.
Claire stepped closer.
Inside, an old metal box sat empty.
Except for one photograph.
She picked it up.
Her father stood beside Margaret.
And between them stood a man Claire had never seen before.
On the back, her father had written six words:
If Margaret comes back, call him.
Below the sentence was a name.
Claire read it aloud.
“Jonathan Vale.”
Behind them, Daniel stopped breathing.
Claire turned.
“You know him?”
Daniel's face had gone white.
Before he could answer, the front doorbell rang again.
May you like
This time, Daniel whispered:
“Claire, don't open that door.”
