Chapter 5 - The Room Where She Disappeared

The hidden door opened slowly.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

The only sound was the old wood scraping against the floor.

My father stood beside me.

My mother stayed behind us.

And Claire...

Claire looked like she wanted to run.

That was when I knew.

Whatever was behind that door was not just a family secret.

It was something that could destroy everyone standing in that basement.

I stared into the darkness.

"Who was she?"

Nobody answered.

I looked at my father.

"Who was the woman in that photo?"

His face tightened.

"My first wife."

The words felt unreal.

I looked at my mother.

She didn't deny it.

That hurt.

Because some part of me was still hoping everyone was wrong.

Still hoping there was a simple explanation.

But there wasn't.

My father stepped toward the hidden room.

"Her name was Victoria."

I followed him.

The room behind the door was small.

Much smaller than I expected.

It wasn't a bedroom.

It wasn't storage.

It looked like someone had frozen a moment in time.

A desk sat against the wall.

Old files covered the surface.

A broken lamp rested in the corner.

There were photographs everywhere.

But the thing that caught my attention was the wall.

Hundreds of notes.

Dates.

Names.

Connections.

My life.

My mother's life.

My father's life.

All connected by lines.

Someone had been investigating us.

I stepped closer.

"This was hers?"

My father nodded.

"Yes."

"Why?"

He looked at the wall.

"Because she knew someone was trying to destroy this family."

I picked up one of the papers.

It was a report.

A property investigation.

Another document.

Financial transfers.

Another.

A list of names.

My eyes stopped.

Because I saw one name written over and over again.

Claire.

I turned around.

"She was involved."

Claire crossed her arms.

"I was trying to find the truth."

I looked at her.

"You expect me to believe that?"

She looked frustrated.

"You don't know what happened."

"Then tell me."

She stayed silent.

That silence was becoming familiar.

Everyone in this house had mastered the art of saying nothing.

My mother walked into the room.

"I should have told you."

I looked at her.

"Yes."

The word came out colder than I intended.

She nodded.

"I know."

She looked at the photographs.

"Victoria discovered something about your father."

My father looked away.

"Not about me."

My mother looked at him.

"About what happened before."

I frowned.

"What happened before?"

Nobody answered.

I grabbed another folder.

Inside was a photograph of my father and Victoria.

They looked happy.

Young.

Nothing like the story I had been told.

On the back of the picture was a date.

The same year my mother said my father left.

I looked at her.

"You knew they were still married?"

My mother closed her eyes.

"Yes."

The room felt smaller.

"So you were the other woman?"

The second I said it, I regretted it.

My mother's face broke.

Not from anger.

From pain.

"No."

Her voice was quiet.

"I wasn't."

She looked at my father.

"Tell her."

My father didn't move.

"Tell her what happened."

He stayed silent.

And for the first time, I saw anger in my mother's face.

Not fear.

Anger.

"You owe her the truth."

My father finally spoke.

"Victoria disappeared before we knew what happened."

I stared at him.

"You said she died."

He nodded.

"Everyone believed that."

"Everyone?"

He looked at the floor.

"Because someone made sure everyone believed it."

A cold feeling moved through me.

"Who?"

My father looked toward Claire.

She immediately shook her head.

"No."

I stepped toward her.

"You know."

She looked at me.

"I know part of it."

"Then start talking."

She looked at my mother.

Then my father.

Then me.

Finally, she spoke.

"Victoria was investigating your family's finances."

I listened carefully.

"She found something."

"What?"

Claire swallowed.

"Someone was using your father's company to move money."

My father nodded.

"I found out after she disappeared."

I looked at him.

"And you did nothing?"

His expression changed.

"I tried."

"Then why did you leave?"

He looked at me.

"Because the next person they were going after was you."

Silence.

My heart stopped for a moment.

"Me?"

My father nodded.

"They knew about you."

I looked at the wall.

All those pictures.

All those notes.

Someone had been watching my life.

My childhood.

My family.

Everything.

My mother touched my arm.

"We wanted you far away."

I pulled my arm back.

"Far away?"

I looked at both of them.

"You sent me away."

My mother's eyes filled with tears.

"We saved your life."

I wanted to believe her.

I wanted to.

But there were too many secrets.

Too many years stolen from me.

I turned back toward the files.

Then I found something.

A letter.

My name was written on it.

Not recently.

Years ago.

My hands trembled.

I opened it.

The handwriting was unfamiliar.

But the first sentence made my entire body freeze.

"If you are reading this, then they failed to keep you away from the truth."

I kept reading.

"Your mother tried to protect you. Your father tried to hide you. But the person closest to you is the one you should fear."

I stopped.

The room became silent.

I looked around.

Everyone was watching me.

"Who wrote this?"

My father stepped forward.

"Give it to me."

"No."

I held it tighter.

"You have hidden enough."

I continued reading.

"Do not trust the person who tells you they saved your family."

My eyes moved slowly.

Then I saw the signature.

Victoria.

My father's first wife.

The woman everyone thought was gone.

I looked at my father.

"She knew."

He looked terrified.

"Yes."

"She knew who did this."

He nodded.

"But she never got the chance to tell us."

I looked back at the letter.

There was something else inside.

A small piece of paper.

A name.

Only one name.

I read it.

And my blood turned cold.

Because it wasn't Claire.

It wasn't my father.

It wasn't anyone I expected.

It was my own name.

Someone had written my name as the final piece of the secret.

I looked up.

"What does this mean?"

Nobody answered.

Then my father's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed instantly.

"What?"

I watched him listen.

Then his hand started shaking.

"Where?"

A pause.

Then:

"Don't let her leave."

Everyone froze.

I stepped closer.

"Who was that?"

My father looked at me.

His eyes were filled with fear.

"The police."

My heart dropped.

"Why?"

He slowly lowered the phone.

"Because they found Victoria."

Nobody moved.

I stared at him.

"Found her?"

He nodded.

"But that's impossible."

My father looked toward the hidden room.

"No."

His voice became a whisper.

"Because she wasn't dead."

The basement lights suddenly went out.

Darkness covered everything.

Then, from upstairs...

A woman's voice called my name.

A voice I had never heard before.

May you like

But my father recognized it immediately.

And when he whispered who it was, my entire world stopped.
