Chapter 3 - The Witness Nathan Left Behind

The person standing behind Richard did not say a word.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Not Richard.
Not Bianca.
Not even me.
Because I knew that face.
Not because I had seen it recently.
Because I had seen it in the memories Nathan left behind.
"Samantha?"
My voice came out barely above a whisper.
The woman standing inside my house looked toward the phone on the porch.
"Yes, Elena. I'm here."
I couldn't believe it.
Nathan's attorney was standing in my kitchen.
Holding a document.
A document with my husband's signature.
Richard slowly lowered the small black box in his hand.
"What are you doing here?"
Samantha looked at him calmly.
"The same thing I should have done yesterday."
Richard's expression hardened.
"You don't have permission to enter this house."
Samantha glanced toward the open door.
"Neither did you."
The silence afterward was painful.
Because everyone knew she was right.
Bianca stepped forward.
"Richard, who is she?"
Samantha looked at her.
"I'm the attorney who managed Nathan Moore's estate."
Bianca's confidence disappeared.
Richard immediately stepped between them.
"This is a private family matter."
"No."
Samantha opened the folder in her hands.
"This stopped being a family matter when you filed fraudulent documents with the county."
My heart raced.
Fraudulent documents.
The words sounded unreal.
I had spent the last three weeks trying to survive losing my husband.
Trying to prepare for a baby without him.
Trying to understand how my life had changed overnight.
I never imagined my own father would become the person I needed protection from.
Richard laughed nervously.
"You are making accusations you cannot prove."
Samantha looked at him.
"I can prove everything."
She placed the document on the kitchen table.
"Including the fact that Nathan changed the estate protection plan six months ago."
Richard's face changed.
Only slightly.
But I noticed.
He knew exactly what she was talking about.
I saw it.
The moment of recognition.
"You knew about this," I whispered.
Richard looked at me through the window.
For a second, he looked almost guilty.
Then the cold expression returned.
"You don't understand what you're involved in."
The words hurt.
Because they sounded less like a father speaking to his daughter.
And more like someone warning an enemy.
Samantha walked toward the door.
"Elena, emergency services are on their way."
I nodded.
But my eyes stayed on Richard.
"What is in that box?"
Nobody answered.
That scared me.
Samantha looked at the black box.
Then at Richard.
"Give it to me."
Richard tightened his grip.
"No."
"Richard."
"No."
His voice became louder.
"You don't get to walk in here and take things from my family."
Samantha stared at him.
"That box does not belong to your family."
She paused.
"It belongs to Elena."
My heart stopped.
Mine?
Richard looked shocked.
Bianca looked confused.
I looked at the box.
"Why would Nathan leave something for me that I don't know about?"
Samantha's expression softened.
"Because Nathan knew you would never believe anyone was capable of doing this to you."
I felt tears forming.
Because she was right.
Nathan knew me better than anyone.
I always looked for the good in people.
Even when they didn't deserve it.
Especially with my father.
I had spent years hoping Richard would eventually see me as his daughter instead of a responsibility.
But maybe Nathan saw the truth before I did.
"What is inside?"
Samantha looked at the box.
"Evidence."
The word made the room colder.
"Evidence of what?"
She didn't answer immediately.
Then she looked at Richard.
"Ask him."
Everyone turned.
Richard's jaw tightened.
"You have no idea what you're doing."
Samantha stepped closer.
"I know exactly what I'm doing."
She pointed at the folder.
"Nathan recorded every conversation, every document, and every attempt to interfere with Elena's inheritance."
I stared at her.
"Nathan recorded things?"
"Not everything."
She looked toward the box.
"Only what he thought he would need."
A memory flashed through my mind.
A week before Nathan died, he had come home late.
He seemed distracted.
I asked if something was wrong.
He hugged me.
Longer than usual.
Then he said:
"Promise me something."
"What?"
"If anything ever feels wrong, don't ignore it because you want to believe someone is better than they are."
At the time, I thought he was talking about strangers.
I never imagined he meant my father.
Richard walked toward Samantha.
"You are trying to turn my daughter against me."
Samantha shook her head.
"No."
She looked at me.
"Your actions did that."
Richard stopped.
The words hit harder than yelling would have.
Bianca suddenly grabbed Richard's arm.
"Maybe we should leave."
He looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed unsure.
But then he looked back at the box.
"No."
That single word told me everything.
He wasn't leaving because of me.
He wasn't staying because he cared.
He stayed because of what Nathan had hidden.
"What is in that box?" I asked again.
Richard didn't answer.
Samantha did.
"A key."
I frowned.
"A key?"
She nodded.
"And a message."
My breathing slowed.
"What message?"
Samantha looked at the box.
"One Nathan wanted you to read only if someone tried to take your home."
The room went silent.
I felt a wave of emotion hit me.
Nathan had known.
He had prepared for a moment when I would need him most.
Even after death, he was still trying to protect me.
I reached for the edge of the porch.
"I want to see it."
Samantha looked at Richard.
"Then he needs to step away."
Richard laughed.
"You think a piece of paper changes anything?"
Samantha looked at him.
"No."
She picked up her phone.
"But the recording does."
Richard froze.
"What recording?"
Samantha didn't answer.
She pressed a button on her phone.
A voice filled the kitchen.
Nathan's voice.
My entire body went still.
Because I had not heard that voice in three weeks.
"Elena..."
I covered my mouth.
Tears immediately filled my eyes.
It was him.
My husband.
My Nathan.
"If you are hearing this, something happened that I hoped would never happen."
Richard stepped backward.
The color drained from his face.
Nathan continued.
"I need you to know one thing first."
The recording crackled.
Then his voice became clearer.
"Trust Samantha."
I looked at my father's face.
He wasn't angry anymore.
He was afraid.
Nathan's voice continued.
"The person trying to take this house from you is not doing it because of money."
My heart started pounding.
Samantha looked at me.
Richard looked at the speaker.
Then Nathan said the words that changed everything.
"They are doing it because they are afraid of what you will find beneath this house."
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
"What does that mean?" I whispered.
The recording ended.
Richard immediately stepped forward.
"Give me that phone."
Samantha moved away.
"No."
Richard's eyes darkened.
"Elena."
I looked at him.
For the first time in my life...
I was not afraid of disappointing him.
"Tell me the truth."
He said nothing.
Then Samantha's phone vibrated.
She looked down at the screen.
Her expression changed instantly.
"What?"
I watched her read the message.
Then she slowly looked toward me.
"Elena..."
"What?"
She turned the phone around.
It was a message from an unknown number.
Only six words.
My hands started shaking.
Because the message was not for Samantha.
It was for me.
And it said:
"Don't trust your father's version."
A second message arrived.
This time with an image attached.
Samantha opened it.
The picture showed Nathan standing beside someone I knew very well.
Someone who had been inside my house many times.
Someone who had smiled at me while hiding the truth.

And beneath the photo was one sentence:
"He was never working alone."
