Chapter 6 - The Takeover

Friday arrived with the finality of an executioner's axe.

The boardroom of Hawthorne Holdings was a sterile, gray room on the fiftieth floor of their corporate headquarters. Adrian sat at the head of the table, his tie loosened, dark bags under his eyes. His board of directors had abandoned him. Only his mother sat beside him, weeping silently into a handkerchief.

The heavy double doors swung open.

I walked in, wearing a sharp, tailored black maternity suit, my heels clicking rhythmically against the hardwood floor. Flanked by Marcus Sterling and a team of auditors, I took the seat at the opposite end of the long table, directly facing the man who had been my husband.

Adrian looked up. He looked broken. Good.

"Claire," he croaked, his voice raw. "Please."

I opened a file folder and laid it on the table. "This is not a social call, Mr. Hawthorne. I am here representing Vale Consolidated to finalize the acquisition of your assets in lieu of the three hundred million dollars you owe our subsidiaries."

"You can't take the company," Adrian pleaded, standing up, planting his hands on the table. "I built this. This is my legacy."

"You built a house of cards on my father's land," I corrected him coldly. "And you financed it with my family's money. You have no legacy, Adrian. You have a debt."

Marcus slid a stack of legal documents down the polished wood table. "Sign here, Mr. Hawthorne. This transfers complete ownership of Hawthorne Holdings, including all intellectual property, physical assets, and the deed to the Hawthorne estate, to Vale Consolidated. If you sign this, we will forgive the remainder of your personal debt, and you will not go to federal prison for the financial fraud our auditors uncovered in your tax returns."

Adrian flinched. He knew they had found his doctored books. He looked at the pen as if it were a venomous snake.

Eleanor sobbed harder. "Claire, please... we are family. That baby you're carrying... it's my grandchild."

I turned my glacial stare onto Eleanor. The woman who had spat in my face was now begging for mercy in the name of the child she had called a trap.

"You lost the right to call this child your blood the night you threw us into the storm," I said, my voice dangerously soft. "This child is a Vale. They will never know the name Hawthorne."

I looked back at Adrian. "Sign the papers, Adrian. Or Marcus calls the SEC, and you spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary."

Adrian’s hands shook uncontrollably as he picked up the pen. A tear rolled down his cheek, splashing onto the contract. With a jagged, defeated motion, he signed his name, signing away his company, his home, and his entire life.

I stood up, buttoning my jacket. "You have until sunset to vacate the estate. Leave the keys on the counter. Security will escort you out of the building."

I turned and walked toward the door.

"Claire!" Adrian cried out one last time, falling to his knees beside the boardroom table. "I'm sorry! I'm so sorry! I loved you!"

May you like

I paused at the door, glancing over my shoulder. "You didn't love me, Adrian. You loved who you thought you were when you were with me. Goodbye."

The doors closed heavily behind me, sealing his fate.
