Chapter 5 - Cracks in the Foundation

The collapse of Hawthorne Holdings wasn't an event; it was a highly orchestrated demolition.
By Monday morning, the financial world woke up to the news that Meridian Bank had initiated hostile foreclosure proceedings against Adrian’s empire. The stock price plummeted eighty percent in the first two hours of trading.
Sitting in the glass-walled boardroom of Vale Consolidated, I watched the news tickers with a cup of herbal tea in my hand. Marcus Sterling stood by the monitor, reading the reports.
"His logistics partners have severed ties," Marcus announced smoothly. "Once word got out that Vale ports would no longer prioritize Hawthorne shipments, the shipping conglomerates pulled their contracts. He has zero incoming revenue, and three hundred million in debt due by Friday."
"What about his personal assets?" I asked.
"Frozen," Marcus replied. "Because he used his personal estate as collateral for the Vanguard leases, we have locked his accounts pending the foreclosure."
On the other side of the city, the reality of my words was crashing down on Adrian.
Inside the Hawthorne estate, chaos reigned. Adrian was screaming into his phone, pacing the floor of his study. "What do you mean declined?! It's a black card! Try it again! ... Well, unfreeze it!" He threw the phone violently against the wall, shattering it into pieces.
Vanessa stood in the doorway, her arms crossed, looking at the man she thought was her golden ticket. The shiny veneer had worn off. He was pale, sweating, and reeked of stale alcohol.
"Adrian, my credit card was declined at the salon today," she said, her voice entirely devoid of the sweet, submissive tone she usually used.
"Everything is frozen, Vanessa!" he snapped, running his hands through his unkempt hair. "Claire is doing this. She's destroying me!"
"Well, fix it!" Vanessa shot back. "I didn't sign up to be with a broke loser. You told me you were untouchable. You told me she was a nobody!"
"She lied to me!" Adrian roared.
"She didn't lie, you were just too stupid to check!" Vanessa sneered. She turned on her heel and marched upstairs. Thirty minutes later, she came down with two Louis Vuitton suitcases.
"Where are you going?" Adrian demanded, his voice cracking.
"Out," Vanessa said coldly. "I have an audition in LA. Don't call me."
She walked out the front door, leaving Adrian standing alone in the massive foyer.
Upstairs, Eleanor was experiencing her own private hell. Her phone had been ringing non-stop, but not with invitations. The Country Club had called to inform her that her membership had been suspended due to "unpaid dues." The charity boards she sat on had politely asked for her immediate resignation, citing the "unfortunate public scandal" at the gala. She had been exiled from the only world she cared about.

She walked downstairs, her face pale and aged. "Adrian... we have to apologize to her. We have to beg."
Adrian looked at his mother, the reality of his total ruin finally settling into his bones. The arrogant king of real estate was gone. Only a terrified boy remained. "It's too late, Mom. She owns everything."
