Chapter 9 - The Choice Adrian Never Expected

Mara Reynolds was alive.
Dr. Reynolds reached her first.
Brother and sister stood in the entrance hall staring at one another across eleven lost years.
Then Ethan embraced her.
Mara cried.
Titan circled them, tail moving slowly.
Her disappearance had been part of Gabriel’s protection plan.
Unlike Gabriel, she had left the country completely.
She returned only after learning Vane had been arrested.
The envelope contained legal documents.
Evidence proving Adrian’s grandfather had unknowingly invested in Vane’s fraudulent company.
More importantly, it contained compensation funds recovered years earlier.
Money intended for victims.
Including Elena’s father.
Vane had hidden the records.
The Castillo family had been entitled to restitution.
Adrian offered to make it right immediately.
Elena surprised him.
“No.”
He frowned.
“No?”
“I want the victims found. All of them.”
“That could take months.”
“Then take months.”
“It could cost considerably more.”
“That isn't my problem.”
Adrian stared at her.
Then smiled.
“No. Apparently it isn't.”
Together they established a restitution project.
Not charity.
Repayment.
Thomas cooperated with investigators.
His sentence would be decided by a court, and Elena refused to pretend consequences were cruelty.
She visited once.
Thomas apologized to Sophia through Elena.
Elena told him that one day, if Sophia chose, she might see him.
But not yet.
Gabriel continued earning his way back.
Months passed.
Sophia began calling him Dad naturally.
The first time it happened, Gabriel had to leave the kitchen because he couldn't stop crying.
Elena pretended not to notice.
Later she found him outside.
“You okay?”
“No.”
She smiled.
“Good.”
He laughed through tears.
Their relationship remained uncertain.
But it was honest.
That was better than promises.
Adrian changed too.
He reduced the walls around his life.
The mysterious, intimidating man who once ate alone now regularly found Sophia sitting across from him at breakfast demanding pancakes shaped like animals.
Titan became her permanent shadow.
One evening, Adrian asked Elena whether she regretted coming to work at the mansion.
She considered it.
“No.”
“Even after all this?”
“Especially after all this.”
He nodded.
Then handed her another envelope.
She groaned.
“You have a problem with envelopes.”
“This one isn't for you.”
It was addressed to Sophia.
Inside was a certificate.
Titan’s ownership had legally been transferred into a shared family trust ensuring he would remain with Sophia if anything happened to Adrian.
Elena looked up.
“You love that dog.”
“Yes.”
“And you're doing this?”
“He made his decision before I did.”
Sophia hugged Adrian.
He froze.
Then awkwardly hugged her back.
Elena saw something soften in him.
A man who had built his life around control had discovered that love usually entered without permission.
That night, Gabriel arrived.
He asked Elena to walk with him.
No dramatic speech.
No ring.
No demand.
“I want to ask you something.”
“What?”
“Can I keep showing up?”
Elena looked at him.
“You don't need permission to be Sophia’s father.”
“I’m not asking about Sophia.”
She understood.
He continued.
“I don't expect us to become what we were.”
“We can't.”
“I know.”
“But maybe we can become something else.”
Elena looked toward the house.
Sophia sat on the steps with Titan.
Adrian stood behind her.
For years Elena had survived by expecting nothing.
Now possibility frightened her more than loneliness ever had.
“Keep showing up,” she said.
Gabriel smiled.
“I can do that.”
Then Dante came outside.
His expression was serious.
“Adrian needs everyone inside.”
Elena’s heart tightened.
“What happened?”
Dante handed her a letter.
It had arrived from federal investigators.
Charles Vane had signed a full confession.
But attached to it was one final document.
A custody record.
Sophia’s name appeared at the top.
Elena stared at it.
“Why is my daughter’s name on this?”
Gabriel took the paper.
His face changed.
Adrian stepped into the doorway.
“There’s something about Sophia’s birth none of us knew.”
Elena looked at him.
He held the second page.

Then he read the name printed beneath the words LEGAL GUARDIAN.
And everything went silent.
