Chapter 5 - Someone Inside the Mansion Lied

Vincent raised both hands.

“Before anyone decides I'm responsible, listen.”

Dante searched him.

Nothing.

Vincent looked exhausted rather than dangerous.

He admitted hiding.

Someone had sent him photographs of his sleeping children with threats attached.

He had believed Adrian was being watched.

The suspicious foundation account?

Vincent had never controlled it.

His signature had been forged.

Dante verified the claim.

The evidence pointed somewhere else.

Someone had spent twelve years constructing false trails.

Then Sophia solved what the adults had missed.

She looked at the photographs in the tunnel room.

“Why is the doctor in all of them?”

Everyone turned.

Dr. Reynolds stiffened.

He appeared in the background of photograph after photograph.

Not because he was following anyone.

Because he had been present.

Reynolds slowly sat down.

“I should have told you sooner.”

His sister Mara had not merely helped Gabriel disappear.

She had discovered the original scheme.

A financial adviser named Charles Vane had been stealing from Adrian’s family businesses and manipulating Vincent’s foundation.

Gabriel had uncovered it.

Vane arranged Adrian’s car crash.

Mara helped Gabriel vanish before Vane could reach him.

But Vane himself supposedly died nine years earlier.

“Supposedly?” Adrian asked.

Reynolds nodded.

“His body was never identified conclusively.”

Dante pulled up old photographs.

Sophia looked.

Then pointed.

“That’s the nice man from the church.”

Elena’s blood went cold.

Charles Vane had donated the teddy bear.

He had put the phone inside.

He had returned.

And he wanted them looking at Gabriel instead of him.

Adrian ordered every entrance secured.

But Vane was already gone.

A new message arrived on the hidden phone.

BRING THE BRACELET TO PIER 27. COME ALONE.

Elena looked at the scratched numbers.

2-7-14.

They had never represented a date.

They represented Pier 27, locker 14.

That evening, Dante opened the locker.

Inside was a flash drive.

And Gabriel was waiting.

Elena saw him before anyone else.

Older.

Thinner.

But alive.

For several seconds neither moved.

Then Sophia whispered:

“Daddy?”

Gabriel broke.

He dropped to his knees.

Elena watched years of grief collapse across his face.

Sophia approached cautiously.

Gabriel did not touch her.

He let her choose.

She studied him.

Then handed him her teddy bear.

“You can hold Teddy.”

Gabriel began crying.

Elena turned away.

Later, Gabriel explained everything.

Vane had threatened Elena before Sophia was born.

Gabriel disappeared to protect them while collecting evidence.

He had tried repeatedly to return, but every time he approached, Vane demonstrated that he still knew where Elena lived.

Adrian listened silently.

“You should have trusted me.”

“I didn't know who inside your house belonged to him.”

Adrian accepted that.

The flash drive contained enough evidence to expose Vane’s financial crimes.

But one file was encrypted.

Gabriel knew the password had something to do with Titan.

“Titan?” Elena asked.

Gabriel nodded.

“Mara trained him before Adrian owned him.”

Adrian stared.

That was impossible.

Titan had come from a private rescue after Mara’s supposed death.

Gabriel looked at him.

“That’s why he recognized Sophia.”

“How?”

Gabriel turned toward Elena.

“Because Titan belonged to your family first.”

Before he could explain, Dante’s phone rang.

Security alarm.

Mansion.

Sophia was supposed to be there with Mrs. Bellini.

Dante answered.

His face emptied.

“The nursery door is open.”

Elena grabbed the phone.

“Where is my daughter?”

A guard answered from the other end.

Then Elena heard Titan barking.

May you like

And a child’s voice whispered:

“Mommy, somebody's in my room.”
