Chapter 5 - The Price of Fear

Locker 317 contained no money.

No gun.

No passport.

Only a red notebook, an old cassette recorder, and a photograph.

Adrian lifted the photograph first.

Elena stood outside a white farmhouse.

The date printed on the back was three years after her disappearance.

Alive.

Beside her stood Gregory.

Adrian stared until Tomas quietly asked, “You okay?”

“No.”

It was the most truthful answer Adrian had given in years.

The notebook was filled with numbers and initials.

Payments.

Dates.

Shipping containers.

Political officials.

Police officers.

Judges.

Gregory had been building a network beneath Adrian’s organization for almost two decades.

The cassette was worse.

Elena’s voice filled the empty station storage room.

“If Adrian hears this, then Marcus survived long enough to find him.”

Adrian sat down.

Twelve years had passed, but he would have recognized her voice anywhere.

“Adrian, you need to understand that Gregory didn't take me because of you. He took me because I discovered what he was doing.”

The recording continued.

Gregory had used Adrian’s shipping businesses to move illegal weapons and stolen medical supplies. Elena found the accounting records accidentally while helping Adrian reorganize a charitable foundation.

She confronted Gregory.

That same evening, she disappeared.

“I stayed alive because Gregory believed I had copied evidence he still needed. He was right.”

Elena's breathing trembled.

“If Lily is alive, protect her.”

Adrian leaned forward.

The tape hissed.

“Lily is my sister’s daughter.”

Adrian blinked.

Elena’s younger sister, Maria, had supposedly died in a car accident nine years earlier.

“She witnessed Gregory murder a federal investigator. Gregory ordered Maria killed. She survived long enough to give birth. I took the baby before Gregory could find her.”

Now everything made sense.

Lily wasn't merely evidence.

She was a witness connection Gregory desperately wanted erased.

The recording ended with coordinates.

An old lakeside sanitarium outside Blackridge.

Adrian stood immediately.

Tomas stopped him.

“This could be a trap.”

“It probably is.”

“That usually means we don't walk into it.”

“You're welcome to stay.”

Tomas stared at him.

“After fifteen years, you still make terrible jokes.”

At the hospital, Marcus remained alive after surgery.

Lily sat beside his bed.

Bear slept under her chair.

When Adrian entered, she stood.

“Did you find Elena?”

“Maybe.”

Lily saw the answer on his face.

“You're going after her.”

“Yes.”

“I'm coming.”

“No.”

“Why does everybody keep saying no to me?”

“Because eight-year-olds don't accompany organized crime investigations.”

“I lived through one.”

Adrian had no response.

Lily crossed her arms.

“You said family isn't always blood.”

“I did.”

“Then Elena is family.”

Adrian looked at Marcus.

Marcus smiled weakly.

“Good luck.”

“You're enjoying this.”

“More than I should.”

Adrian eventually compromised.

Lily would remain at the mansion with Dr. Hart and six guards.

Before he left, she handed him the locket.

“She might remember this.”

Adrian closed his fingers around it.

The sanitarium had been abandoned for seventeen years.

Adrian's team entered at midnight.

They found signs someone had been living there.

Food.

Medical equipment.

Books.

Then they found a locked room.

Adrian opened it.

A woman stood beside the window.

Her hair was streaked with gray.

Her face was thinner.

But she was Elena.

Neither moved.

Twelve years.

Adrian had imagined this moment a thousand different ways.

None included silence.

Elena crossed the room.

She touched his face.

“You got older.”

He almost laughed.

“So did you.”

Then she slapped him.

Tomas turned away.

Adrian stared.

“That was for believing Marcus betrayed me.”

“I probably deserved that.”

Then Elena wrapped her arms around him.

Adrian stood motionless for one second.

Then twelve years of grief collapsed.

He held her.

Not like a crime boss.

Not like the most feared man in Blackridge.

Like a man who had spent twelve years pretending he had no heart because losing the person inside it had hurt too much.

Elena whispered against him.

“You took too long.”

“I know.”

A gun clicked behind them.

Gregory’s voice came through the doorway.

“Yes, he always was slow.”

Adrian turned.

Gregory stood with three armed men.

Tomas had disappeared from the hallway.

Adrian's expression went cold.

“You've been busy, Uncle.”

Gregory smiled.

“I built everything you have.”

“No. You poisoned everything I built.”

“Semantics.”

Elena stepped beside Adrian.

Gregory looked at her.

“You were always troublesome.”

“You were always mediocre.”

His smile tightened.

“Still fearless.”

“No. I’m terrified.”

She took Adrian’s hand.

“I just don't let it choose for me.”

Gregory lifted his weapon.

Before he could fire, the building alarm exploded.

Red emergency lights flashed.

Smoke poured from a hallway.

Gregory turned.

Tomas appeared behind one guard and knocked him unconscious.

Adrian lunged.

The room erupted.

Two shots.

Breaking glass.

A struggle.

Gregory escaped through a side corridor.

Adrian chased him to the courtyard.

A black vehicle sped away.

Tomas appeared behind him.

“Lost him.”

Adrian looked toward the road.

“No.”

He checked his phone.

Twenty-three missed calls.

All from the mansion.

His stomach dropped.

He answered.

Dr. Hart was crying.

“Adrian…”

“What happened?”

“The security system went down.”

Adrian stopped breathing.

“Where's Lily?”

Silence.

“Evelyn.”

“They took her.”

The world narrowed.

“And Bear?”

“He attacked one of them. They shot him.”

Adrian closed his eyes.

For one terrible second, rage nearly swallowed everything else.

Then Elena touched his arm.

“Adrian.”

He opened his eyes.

“What?”

She understood immediately.

“Gregory has Lily?”

Adrian nodded.

Elena's face changed.

The frightened prisoner disappeared.

May you like

Something harder replaced her.

“Then we stop running.”
