Chapter 4 - Locker 317

Gregory provided an alibi.

Too perfect an alibi.

Restaurant receipts.

Security footage.

Three witnesses.

A private driver.

Adrian distrusted perfect things.

Real life contained mistakes.

Only carefully constructed lies arrived without wrinkles.

Still, Gregory had supposedly been forty miles away when Marcus’s house burned.

By afternoon, Adrian had something more important.

The unidentified body recovered from the fire was not Marcus Rourke.

Dental records belonged to a man named Peter Vance.

A petty thief.

Adrian stared at Tomas.

“Then Marcus escaped.”

“Or wasn't there when the house burned.”

“Lily heard him during the shooting.”

“Maybe he survived.”

Adrian looked toward the window.

“Find him.”

They searched hospitals first.

Nothing.

Then train stations, shelters, police reports.

Nothing.

At sunset, one of Tomas’s men called.

An injured man had been seen limping into an abandoned church four miles from the fire.

Adrian drove there personally.

Lily insisted on coming.

“No.”

“He's my dad.”

“If it is him.”

“If he’s hurt, he'll be scared.”

Adrian almost told her grown men weren't scared.

Then remembered the starving dog.

Everyone was afraid of something.

He allowed her to come but made her remain in the SUV until the building was secure.

The church had been abandoned after a roof collapse.

Broken stained glass covered the floor.

Tomas found blood beside the altar.

Fresh.

Adrian followed the trail downstairs.

A figure moved behind a pillar.

A gun appeared.

Tomas raised his weapon.

“Drop it!”

The wounded man laughed.

“I wondered how long you'd take, Vale.”

Adrian froze.

Marcus Rourke stepped into the light.

Older.

Thinner.

A scar crossed one side of his face.

But alive.

Adrian stared at the ghost of the man he had mourned.

Then punched him.

Marcus fell backward.

Tomas sighed.

“Boss.”

“That was six years overdue.”

Marcus wiped blood from his mouth.

“Fair.”

Adrian grabbed his jacket.

“Where is Elena?”

Marcus looked at him.

“You really haven't changed.”

“Where is she?”

“I don't know.”

Adrian tightened his grip.

“But she's alive,” Marcus said quickly.

Adrian released him.

“Explain.”

Marcus sank against a pew.

Twelve years earlier, Elena had discovered that someone inside Adrian’s organization was secretly trafficking weapons through humanitarian shipments.

She planned to expose it.

Before she could, she disappeared.

Marcus had investigated.

Every clue pointed toward him.

Financial transfers appeared in his accounts. Phone records showed contact with rival groups. Witnesses claimed Marcus had ordered Elena abducted.

Adrian believed the evidence.

Marcus ran.

Six years later, Gregory’s men found him.

“They shot me at the docks,” Marcus said. “I fell into the river.”

“I saw you fall.”

“You didn't see me die.”

“I searched.”

“And Gregory made sure you wouldn't find me.”

Adrian’s face hardened.

“You're accusing my uncle.”

“I'm telling you your uncle is the Architect.”

Adrian said nothing.

Marcus continued.

“Gregory built the entire conspiracy. He manufactured evidence against me. He took Elena. He made you believe your enemies were outside the family so you'd never look across your own dinner table.”

“Why?”

“Because he wanted your empire.”

“He could have killed me.”

“No. The captains would never have followed him after murdering you. He needed you isolated. Angry. Dependent.”

Adrian remembered all the years Gregory had advised him.

Every rival named.

Every suspicion encouraged.

Every war.

“How does Lily fit into this?”

Marcus looked toward the staircase.

“She doesn't.”

A small voice answered.

“Yes, I do.”

Lily stood there.

Adrian turned sharply.

Tomas muttered something impolite.

She had slipped past the guard.

“Daddy?”

Marcus stopped breathing.

“Lily.”

She ran.

Marcus fell to his knees despite the wound in his side and caught her.

For the first time since Adrian had known him, Marcus Rourke broke completely.

He held his daughter and sobbed.

Lily cried too.

Bear squeezed between them, whining.

Adrian turned away.

Some moments didn't belong to witnesses.

Minutes later, Marcus explained the rest.

Lily was not his biological daughter.

Eight years earlier, Marcus had found her as an infant at a safe house connected to Elena.

Elena had left a message ordering Marcus to protect the child.

“Whose daughter is she?” Adrian asked.

Marcus hesitated.

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

“I promised Elena.”

Adrian stepped closer.

“Marcus.”

Marcus looked at Lily.

Then at Adrian.

“She told me Lily's identity could destroy Gregory.”

“Why?”

“Because Gregory believed the child died.”

Adrian felt unease crawling upward.

“Whose child?”

Marcus answered quietly.

“Elena’s.”

Adrian's entire body went still.

Lily stared between them.

Marcus continued.

“Elena was pregnant when Gregory took her.”

Adrian could hear his own heartbeat.

“How old is Lily?”

“Eight.”

“Elena disappeared twelve years ago.”

“I know.”

“Then she isn't mine.”

“No.”

The realization brought relief and confusion simultaneously.

“Then whose?”

Marcus looked ashamed.

“I never found out.”

Lily stepped away from him.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“You were my daughter.”

“Am I?”

Marcus's face broke.

“You are in every way that matters.”

Lily began crying.

Adrian crouched beside her.

“Family isn't always blood.”

She looked at him.

“Then why does everyone lie about blood?”

Neither man had an answer.

Suddenly gunfire shattered the stained-glass window.

Adrian tackled Lily behind a pew.

Tomas fired toward the entrance.

Marcus pulled Bear down beside them.

More bullets struck stone.

“They followed you,” Marcus said.

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

He looked toward Tomas.

“They followed someone else.”

The gunmen entered from two sides.

Which meant they had known the church layout.

And exactly where Marcus had been hiding.

Someone had leaked the location within minutes of Adrian learning it.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared from Gregory.

COME HOME. WE NEED TO TALK.

Adrian stared at the words.

Then the church lights died.

Lily screamed.

Bear barked.

A man moved in the darkness.

Adrian fired.

When emergency lights flickered on, the attacker was gone.

But Marcus was on the floor.

Blood spread beneath him.

Lily crawled toward him.

“Daddy?”

Marcus reached into his shirt and pulled out a small key.

He pressed it into Adrian’s palm.

“Union Station.”

“What?”

“Locker 317.”

Marcus coughed.

“Elena left proof.”

Lily grabbed his hand.

“Daddy, don't sleep.”

Marcus forced himself to smile.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

Sirens approached.

Adrian looked at the key.

For twelve years, he had hunted enemies.

Now he understood the most dangerous one had been sitting at his table.

And somewhere in Blackridge, Gregory Vale knew Adrian had finally discovered the truth.
