Chapter 5 - The Voice Behind The Lie

"Commander Elias Ward."
Daniel said the name so quietly that for a moment I thought I had heard him wrong.
But General Hale's reaction confirmed it.
His face changed.
The color disappeared from his expression.
The man who had faced battlefields, political attacks, and impossible decisions looked at the hospital speaker like he was looking at something that should never have returned.
"That's impossible," Hale whispered.
The voice through the speaker laughed softly.
Not loudly.
Not dramatically.
Almost like someone enjoying the moment they had waited years for.
"Adrian Hale."
The voice paused.
"You always were the one who believed you could fix everything."
Nobody moved.
The security alarm continued flashing.
The hospital hallway outside had gone completely silent.
Daniel stepped closer to me.
"Stay behind me."
I almost laughed.
After twenty-seven years, after everything that happened, my father finally appeared.
And the first thing he did was try to protect me.
But I wasn't a child anymore.
I wasn't the sixteen-year-old girl who lost her mother and waited for someone to explain why.
I was Lieutenant Claire Morgan.
And I had spent my entire life learning how to stand alone.
"No," I said.
Daniel looked at me.
"I'm done standing behind people who hide the truth."
His expression changed.
Not because he was angry.
Because he understood.
I wasn't asking for protection anymore.
I was demanding answers.
General Hale walked toward the speaker.
"Commander Ward died during Operation Phoenix."
The voice responded immediately.
"You believed the report."
Hale froze.
"Because you wanted to believe it."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who is Commander Ward?" I asked.
Nobody answered.
That told me enough.
I looked at General Hale.
"Tell me."
The general looked exhausted.
"Years ago, Elias Ward was one of the highest-ranking officers involved in intelligence operations."
"Was?"
Daniel looked toward the speaker.
"He was supposed to be dead."
The voice laughed again.
"Supposed to be."
I felt my stomach tighten.
"You faked your death?"
Silence.
Then:
"Not exactly."
The speaker crackled.
"Your mother helped create the story."
My heart stopped.
"My mother?"
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
"Don't listen to him."
The voice interrupted.
"Daniel."
A pause.
"Still protecting her."
Daniel's face tightened.
"You don't get to say her name."
"Oh, I do."
The voice became colder.
"Because I was there when she begged you to tell Claire the truth."
The room went silent.
I looked at Daniel.
He looked away.
That was the answer.
"You knew."
My voice was barely a whisper.
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Claire..."
"You knew."
I felt something break inside me.
Not because my father had secrets.
I expected secrets.
Everyone had them.
But because he had looked at me for the first time today and still chose what to hide.
"Your mother never wanted you involved," Daniel said.
"You don't get to use her to justify lying."
My words hit him.
Good.
I wanted him to feel even a fraction of what I felt.
The speaker continued.
"She was always like that."
I looked toward it.
"Like what?"
"She believed she could save everyone."
A pause.
"Even the people who betrayed her."
General Hale suddenly moved toward the control panel.
"We need to cut the system."
The investigator followed.
But before they reached it, every screen in the room turned on.
The hospital television.
The computer monitor.
The security tablet.
All of them showed the same image.
A video.
My mother.
Elena Morgan.
Alive.
My breath stopped.
She was sitting in a dark room.
Older than the photographs.
Tired.
But alive.
My hands gripped the bed railing.
"No."
Daniel whispered her name.
"Elena..."
The recording began.
Her voice filled the room.
"If you are watching this, then they found you."
My eyes burned.
My mother looked directly into the camera.
Like she knew I would be watching.
"Claire."
Hearing my name from her mouth destroyed the last wall I had built.
"I am sorry."
I couldn't breathe.
"I wanted to tell you everything."
The video paused for a second.
Then continued.
"But if you know the truth, it means I failed."
Daniel covered his mouth.
General Hale looked away.
My mother continued.
"Project Phoenix was never about stolen information."
The room became completely still.
"It was about finding the people who had infiltrated our own government."
I stared at the screen.
"And one of them was someone we trusted."
A file appeared behind her.
A document.
A list of names.
The screen blurred.
Then one name appeared.
I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
Marcus Voss.
My stepfather.
My stomach twisted.
"He wasn't the person controlling everything."
My mother's voice continued.
"He was only the person who got close enough to protect the secret."
I looked at Daniel.
"What does that mean?"
He didn't answer.
The video continued.
"Claire, if Marcus attacked you, it means he found out someone was moving against you."
A tear fell from my eye.
I hated that I wanted to believe her.
I hated that after all these years, one recording could still make me feel like her daughter again.
Then my mother's expression changed.
Fear appeared.
Real fear.
Not the kind someone could fake.
"If you see this message..."
She looked away from the camera.
Like someone had entered the room.
Then she whispered:
"Do not trust Daniel."
The video froze.
The room exploded with silence.
I turned slowly.
My father looked like someone had just shot him.
"Claire..."
I couldn't hear him.
I couldn't hear anyone.
The only thing in my mind was my mother's final warning.
Do not trust Daniel.
The man who said he protected me.
The man who disappeared.
The man who returned today.
The man standing three feet away.
"Explain."
Daniel looked at me.
"I can."
"No."
My voice shook.
"Explain why my mother told me not to trust you."
His eyes filled with pain.
"Because she thought I was dead."
I froze.
"What?"
Daniel looked at General Hale.
The general looked away.
"You don't understand what happened."
"Then make me understand."
Daniel took a breath.
"I wasn't the only person who disappeared."
The speaker suddenly crackled.
Everyone turned.
The voice of Commander Ward returned.
"Finally."
A pause.
"The family reunion is over."
The lights flickered.
Daniel immediately moved.
"Everyone down."
The windows shattered.
Glass exploded across the room.
Security alarms screamed.
Someone fired from the hallway.
General Hale pushed me toward the floor.
The investigator returned fire.
Daniel grabbed my arm and pulled me behind the hospital bed.
Then everything went silent again.
Too silent.
I looked at Daniel.
"What happened?"
He wasn't looking at me.
He was looking at the broken window.
At the darkness outside.
Then my phone vibrated.
A new message.
From the same unknown number.
I opened it.
Three words.
LOOK BEHIND YOU.
I turned slowly.
The hospital room door was open.
May you like
Someone was standing there.
Holding my mother's original Phoenix file.
