Chapter 8 - The Family Alejandro Almost Lost

The doors locked at the same time.

The sound echoed through the mansion.

One after another.

Click.

Click.

Click.

Every exit.

Every window.

Every entrance.

Sealed.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then I looked at the screen.

Luciano Bellandi was still there.

Still smiling.

Like he was sitting comfortably in a room somewhere, watching our lives collapse from a distance.

"The truth is that Sofia was hiding who their mother really was."

The sentence stayed in my mind.

But before fear could take over, anger came first.

Not the anger that made people afraid of me.

Something different.

Something stronger.

The anger of a man who had spent years mourning something that was stolen from him.

I looked at Sofia.

"Tell me."

She didn't look away.

That was the first thing I noticed.

She wasn't hiding anymore.

"I was their mother."

The words confused me.

I stared at her.

"What?"

Sofia stepped closer.

"I know how it sounds."

"Then explain."

She took a deep breath.

"When Luciano discovered I was pregnant, he thought he had found the perfect way to control you."

I looked at the boys.

"But you said..."

"I said he knew they were your weakness."

She looked at them.

"But he never knew the entire truth."

I waited.

Sofia's eyes filled with tears.

"Because he believed there was only one child."

The room became silent.

I didn't understand.

"One child?"

She nodded.

"Before the boys were born, doctors discovered something rare."

She touched her chest.

"They weren't just one baby."

I looked at the four boys.

"Four."

Sofia nodded.

"Four."

The children stood together.

Four small lives.

Four years of secrets.

Four years I had missed.

"Then why hide their identity?"

Sofia looked at Matteo.

Then Elena.

Then me.

"Because Luciano wanted to use the children to force you into giving him control of the company."

I shook my head.

"He could have threatened me."

"He tried."

Her voice became softer.

"That was the problem."

"What?"

"You would have fought him."

I didn't deny it.

Sofia knew me too well.

"If Luciano threatened you directly, you would destroy him."

She paused.

"But if he threatened the children..."

I looked down.

I understood.

I would have done anything.

Anything.

"And that's exactly what he wanted."

I looked at the screen.

Luciano's face had disappeared.

Only the recording remained.

"He knew."

Sofia nodded.

"He knew everything except one thing."

"What?"

"That Matteo had already found out."

My brother stepped forward.

"I discovered Luciano's plan before Sofia did."

I looked at him.

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

Matteo looked away.

"Because our father made me promise."

My expression changed.

"Our father?"

He nodded.

"The night before he died, he gave me the key to the hidden room."

He looked around.

"He knew Luciano was dangerous."

"Why didn't he tell me?"

Matteo's eyes became sad.

"Because he knew you would go after Luciano immediately."

I almost smiled.

Because he was right.

"Your father wanted you to have a normal life."

I looked at the files.

The lies.

The secrets.

"Instead, he gave me this."

Matteo lowered his head.

"I know."

For the first time in years, I saw my brother not as someone who left me.

But as someone who had carried a burden meant for two people.

A sound came from the security monitors.

The video changed.

Luciano appeared again.

But this time, it wasn't a recording.

It was live.

His face filled the screen.

"Beautiful reunion."

My fists tightened.

"You locked my house."

Luciano smiled.

"I corrected a mistake."

"You entered my home."

"No."

He leaned closer.

"I have always been in your home."

The words were meant to frighten me.

They didn't.

Not anymore.

Because I finally understood something.

Luciano's power came from secrets.

And tonight, he had lost his biggest weapon.

The truth.

"You wanted my children."

Luciano smiled.

"I wanted what they represented."

"The company."

"The Moretti legacy."

I looked at Sofia.

Then my sons.

"My legacy isn't something you can steal."

Luciano laughed.

"You sound like your father."

That sentence changed something.

Because suddenly, I wasn't the angry man trying to destroy an enemy.

I was the son of a man who had spent his final years protecting his family.

And I knew exactly what I had to do.

I walked toward the main security panel.

Luciano watched.

"What are you doing?"

I pressed a button.

The hidden room connected to the mansion security system.

Every document.

Every recording.

Every file Luciano had hidden.

Was transferred.

Not to me.

To the authorities.

His smile disappeared.

"What did you do?"

I looked at the screen.

"You spent years collecting evidence."

I paused.

"Thank you for making my job easier."

For the first time, Luciano looked afraid.

The call ended.

The mansion became quiet.

The locks released.

The doors opened.

And for the first time that night, everyone could breathe.

Three months later, the world finally learned the truth.

Luciano Bellandi was arrested after the evidence from the hidden room revealed years of financial crimes, manipulation, and attempts to control the Moretti family.

The people who had helped him disappeared.

The secrets that had controlled our lives for decades finally came into the light.

But the most important thing wasn't the trial.

It wasn't the company.

It wasn't the name Moretti.

It was the four boys sitting at my breakfast table every morning.

My sons.

I still struggled with that word sometimes.

Not because I didn't accept it.

Because I was afraid of how much time I had lost.

Four years.

Four birthdays.

Four years of hearing their first words.

Four years of watching them grow.

Sofia noticed.

She always noticed.

"You blame yourself."

I looked at her.

We were standing in the garden behind the mansion.

The same garden where I once believed I had lost everything.

"I missed their childhood."

She stepped closer.

"You didn't lose them."

I looked toward the house.

The boys were running around with Matteo.

Laughing.

Happy.

"You protected them."

I shook my head.

"No."

I looked at her.

"You did."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Sofia smiled.

A real smile.

The kind I hadn't seen in years.

"I'm sorry."

I looked at her.

"For everything."

The pain was still there.

The scars were still there.

But love had always been complicated.

Especially ours.

"I don't know if I can forget."

She nodded.

"I don't expect you to."

I took her hand.

"But I can forgive."

Tears filled her eyes.

And for the first time since the day I thought I lost her...

I saw hope.

A year later, the mansion no longer felt like a place full of secrets.

It was loud.

Messy.

Alive.

Exactly what Sofia had always wanted.

The dining table that had once been untouched became the center of our home.

Four little boys sat around it every morning.

Arguing.

Laughing.

Making impossible demands.

"More pancakes."

"Not that cup."

"Mateo took my chair."

Normal problems.

Beautiful problems.

Matteo stayed close.

Not as someone protecting us from the shadows.

As my brother.

The brother I thought I lost.

Elena remained part of our family.

The boys still called her their second mother.

And she still cried every time they did.

One evening, I stood in the doorway of the dining room.

Watching Sofia help the boys finish their homework.

The same room.

The same table.

A completely different life.

Sofia noticed me.

"What are you thinking about?"

I smiled.

"That I almost lost all of this."

She walked toward me.

"But you didn't."

I looked at my family.

The people I had spent years searching for.

The people I almost gave up believing existed.

And I finally understood something.

The truth had hurt.

It had broken me.

But it had also brought me home.

Sofia held my hand.

The boys laughed behind us.

And for the first time in many years, there were no hidden messages.

No locked doors.

No secrets waiting in the dark.

Only family.

May you like

Only love.

Only the life we were supposed to have.
