Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Was Never Buried

"Alejandro..."
The voice came from the darkness behind me.
Soft.
Familiar.
Impossible.
I didn't turn around immediately.
Because my mind already knew.
But my heart refused to accept it.
For five years, I had lived with the memory of Sofia.
Her smile.
Her voice.
The way she looked at me before she left the house that final night.
I had replayed those moments thousands of times.
Searching for something I missed.
A sign.
A warning.
Anything.
And now that same voice was standing behind me.
Alive.
Waiting.
Matteo moved first.
He stepped between me and the doorway.
Not because he wanted to protect me.
Because he wanted to protect her.
That realization hurt more than anything.
I looked at him.
"You knew."
His eyes lowered.
"I knew she survived."
The words felt like a betrayal.
Again.
Everyone had known.
Everyone except me.
I slowly turned around.
And there she was.
Standing in the entrance of the hidden room.
Sofia.
Older.
Different.
But still Sofia.
Her hair was longer.
Her face carried years of fear and exhaustion.
But her eyes were the same.
The eyes I had looked into every morning.
The eyes that had made me believe I finally had something worth protecting.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
The four boys stared at the woman in front of them.
Then one of them whispered:
"Mommy."
Sofia's expression broke.
She immediately dropped to her knees.
The children ran toward her.
She wrapped her arms around all four of them.
And I watched.
Unable to move.
Unable to speak.
Because the woman I had buried was holding the children I never knew existed.
My family.
The family I had lost.
The family that had been stolen from me.
Sofia looked up at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
"Alejandro..."
I stepped back.
Not because I hated her.
Because I didn't know what to do with the pain.
"You let me bury you."
Her face fell.
"I know."
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I know."
"You let me mourn you for five years."
Her tears fell.
"I know."
My voice became quieter.
"Why?"
That was the only question that mattered.
Why?
Why would the woman I loved destroy me like that?
Sofia slowly stood.
"Because I thought it was the only way to keep you alive."
I stared at her.
"Don't."
Her expression changed.
"I mean it."
I shook my head.
"Everyone says that."
I looked around the room.
"Everyone has an excuse."
Sofia accepted the anger.
She deserved it.
"I wanted to tell you."
"When?"
"Every day."
"Then why didn't you?"
She looked at the children.
"Because every day I waited was another day they were safe."
I followed her eyes.
The boys.
My sons.
"I don't understand."
Sofia took a breath.
"Five years ago, I discovered Luciano was using your father's old network to take control of everything."
"Your father's network?"
She nodded.
"Your family had enemies you never knew about."
I almost laughed.
"Apparently my entire life was something I never knew about."
Sofia looked down.
"I found documents."
"What documents?"
"Documents proving Luciano had been moving money through companies connected to your father."
Matteo stepped forward.
"He wasn't trying to destroy Alejandro."
Sofia looked at him.
"No."
She looked back at me.
"He was trying to replace him."
The room became silent.
"Replace me?"
Sofia nodded.
"Luciano believed the Moretti name belonged to him."
I looked at the hidden files.
The photographs.
The documents.
The lies.
"So why the children?"
Sofia's expression changed.
Because that answer was the one she feared most.
"Because they were your weakness."
The words hit hard.
"My weakness?"
"Luciano knew you would destroy anyone who threatened your family."
I looked at the boys.
Sofia continued.
"He believed if he controlled them, he controlled you."
My hands tightened.
"Who helped you escape?"
Silence.
I looked at Matteo.
Then Sofia.
Then Elena.
Someone had helped her.
Someone had hidden her.
Someone had protected my family.
Sofia looked at Matteo.
And Matteo looked away.
I understood.
"Matteo."
My brother closed his eyes.
"I couldn't let them kill her."
I stared.
"You were the one."
He nodded.
"I found out Luciano was planning to make Sofia disappear permanently."
"And you faked your own death?"
"Yes."
The answer was simple.
Too simple.
"You sacrificed your entire life."
Matteo looked at the children.
"I protected yours."
For the first time that night, I saw my brother differently.
Not as the man who abandoned me.
But as the man who carried a secret alone for twenty years.
Still...
There was one question left.
"Why didn't you come back?"
Matteo didn't answer.
Sofia did.
"Because someone inside your own security team was watching him."
I froze.
"What?"
She nodded.
"Luciano had people everywhere."
I looked toward the mansion above us.
My home.
My fortress.
A place I thought nobody could enter.
But they had.
Again and again.
A sound interrupted us.
A phone vibrating.
Everyone looked toward the hidden table.
A second phone.
One I hadn't noticed before.
Matteo walked toward it.
"No."
His voice was immediate.
I looked at him.
"What?"
"Don't answer."
"Why?"
His face changed.
Because he knew something.
Something worse.
"I know that number."
The phone continued vibrating.
Sofia looked terrified.
"Who is it?"
Matteo stared at the screen.
Then slowly whispered:
"The person who started all of this."
I stepped closer.
The screen lit up.
A name appeared.
Luciano Bellandi.
My blood ran cold.
The phone stopped.
Then immediately started ringing again.
This time, a message appeared.
Not a text.
A video.
I pressed play.
Luciano appeared on the screen.
Older.
Calm.
Smiling.
Like a man who had been waiting for this moment.
"Alejandro."
Nobody spoke.
Luciano looked directly into the camera.
"If you're watching this, then Sofia finally came home."
Sofia stepped back.
Luciano continued.
"But there is one thing she never told you."
My eyes moved toward Sofia.
Her face changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
The kind I had never seen before.
Luciano smiled.
"Your children were never the secret."
The video paused.
A new line appeared.
One sentence.
The truth is that Sofia was hiding who their mother really was.
I looked at Sofia.
She whispered my name.
May you like
"Alejandro..."
And then every door in the mansion locked at the same time.
