Chapter 6 - The Night the Mansion Was Breached

"Lily-bird."

Mara froze.

Her mother had called her that.

Only her mother.

The silver-haired woman stopped ten feet away.

Nobody lowered their weapons.

Mara stepped from the SUV.

Luca grabbed her wrist.

She looked back.

"Don't."

"I need to know."

"You can know from here."

The woman smiled faintly.

"You must be Luca."

"Who are you?"

"Rebecca Ellison."

Daniel groaned from inside the vehicle.

Rebecca looked toward him.

"You look terrible, Danny."

Daniel's voice shook.

"You're supposed to be dead."

"So were many people tonight."

Mara stared.

"My father said you died before I was born."

Rebecca's expression darkened.

"Your father says whatever keeps him comfortable."

Daniel shouted, "Don't listen to her!"

Rebecca ignored him.

She looked at Mara.

"You have Caroline's eyes."

Mara's throat tightened.

"How do you know what Mom called me?"

"Because Caroline was my best friend."

Daniel forced himself upright despite his wound.

"Rebecca betrayed this family."

Rebecca laughed softly.

"What family? The one you mortgaged to Richard Vale?"

Luca interrupted.

"We're not having a reunion on an open pier."

He looked toward his men.

"Move."

They returned to the mansion through an alternate route.

Rebecca came with them.

So did Daniel.

A doctor treated Daniel's shoulder in a secure medical room.

The bullet had passed through muscle.

Painful.

Not fatal.

Mara wasn't sure how she felt about that.

Hours earlier, she would have panicked at the thought of losing her father.

Now she didn't know which version of him she would be losing.

Her father.

A thief.

A manipulator.

A frightened man.

Perhaps all three.

They gathered in Luca's office shortly before dawn.

Rebecca sat opposite Mara.

Luca remained beside Mara, close enough to intervene but far enough to let her choose the conversation.

The ledger lay on the desk.

"So," Mara said. "Start talking."

Rebecca smiled slightly.

"Definitely Caroline's daughter."

"That isn't an answer."

"No."

Rebecca folded her hands.

"Your mother and I met in college."

"Dad said Mom met you once."

"We shared an apartment for two years."

Mara looked toward Daniel.

His eyes lowered.

Rebecca continued.

"Daniel and I inherited Ellison Holdings from our father. Daniel wanted expansion. I wanted stability."

"Richard Vale?"

"Offered Daniel fast capital."

"And you objected."

"I discovered what Richard actually wanted—access to ports, municipal contracts, political introductions."

Luca nodded.

"Legitimate infrastructure."

"Exactly."

Rebecca continued.

"I threatened to expose everything. Daniel panicked."

"You faked your death?"

"No."

Rebecca looked at her brother.

"He did."

Mara stared at Daniel.

"What?"

Daniel's voice was weak.

"You were a baby."

"You told everyone your sister died?"

Rebecca answered.

"He staged an accident. I survived."

"Why didn't you come back?"

"Richard's people were looking for me."

"So you disappeared."

"With Matteo Moretti's help."

Luca's expression sharpened.

"My uncle."

Rebecca nodded.

"Matteo wasn't like the stories your father told about him."

"What stories?"

"That he betrayed your family."

Luca stared.

"He did."

"No."

Rebecca shook her head.

"He discovered Richard Vale had people inside both the Ellison and Moretti organizations."

Luca leaned forward.

"Who?"

"Men your father trusted."

"My father is dead."

"I know."

"Names."

"Some are dead. Some aren't."

Evan stood near the bookcase.

"What happened to my father?"

Rebecca looked at him with sadness.

"Matteo tried to move you out of the country."

"Why?"

"Because Richard discovered your existence."

"Why did that matter?"

"Because your mother was Richard Vale's daughter."

Silence.

Evan went pale.

"What?"

Rebecca looked toward Mara.

"Michelle wasn't Caroline's cousin."

Mara closed her eyes.

Of course.

Another lie.

Rebecca continued.

"Michelle Vale fell in love with Matteo Moretti. Richard considered it betrayal. Their son connected two families he wanted divided."

Luca's voice was quiet.

"Where is Michelle?"

"Dead."

Evan looked away.

"Matteo?"

Rebecca hesitated.

"Also dead."

Evan shut his eyes.

Mara watched him absorb it.

Then Rebecca looked toward Daniel.

"But before Matteo died, he gave Caroline the ledger."

Mara touched the leather cover.

"Why Mom?"

"Because Caroline was invisible to men like Richard."

"What does that mean?"

"She wasn't a boss. She wasn't a politician. She wasn't a criminal. She was a wife everyone assumed knew nothing."

Rebecca's eyes softened.

"They underestimated her."

Mara almost smiled through the ache.

"That sounds like Mom."

"She copied records for years."

"Then hid the money."

"Yes."

"Thirty million?"

Rebecca nodded.

"Money Richard had moved through your mother's trust and Ellison shell companies. Caroline redirected it."

"Stole it."

"Recovered it."

Daniel muttered, "Richard didn't see the distinction."

Mara looked at him.

"Why did you help her?"

Daniel's face tightened.

"I didn't."

Rebecca said, "He did eventually."

Mara frowned.

Rebecca continued.

"Daniel discovered what Caroline was doing. At first he wanted to stop her."

"At first?"

"Then Richard threatened Mara."

Mara went still.

"When?"

"You were eighteen."

Daniel finally looked at his daughter.

"That's why I changed."

Mara stared.

Changed.

The year Caroline died, her father had become controlling.

Security everywhere.

Drivers.

Restricted schedules.

Questions about friends.

Mara had assumed grief made him possessive.

Maybe fear had.

Daniel said quietly, "Richard told me if the ledger ever surfaced, you would pay."

Mara's anger didn't disappear.

But it shifted.

"You still stole from my trust."

"Yes."

"You lied about Mom."

"Yes."

"You manipulated me into this marriage."

Daniel looked at Luca.

"Yes."

"Why?"

Daniel exhaled.

"Because Richard's people had started watching you again."

Mara glanced at Luca.

"And Luca could protect me."

Daniel nodded.

"Moretti security is stronger than mine."

Luca said dryly, "Debatable after tonight."

Rebecca almost smiled.

Daniel continued.

"I needed an excuse to place Mara inside this house without Richard realizing I knew he was moving against her."

Mara stared.

"So the four-million-dollar debt?"

"Real."

"Convenient."

"Painfully real."

"The additional $2.75 million?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Payments to people helping me hide you."

"Using my money."

"Yes."

Mara laughed bitterly.

"You really are unbelievable."

"I know."

That answer stopped her.

Daniel's eyes filled.

"I know what I've done."

Mara had never seen him cry.

Not at Caroline's funeral.

Not once.

"I spent years telling myself every lie was temporary," Daniel whispered. "Every theft would be repaid. Every secret protected you. Eventually I couldn't tell protection from control."

Mara said nothing.

Daniel looked at Luca.

"I chose him because Caroline did."

Mara frowned.

"What?"

Daniel pointed to the letter.

"Open it."

Mara stared at the envelope she had carried all night.

Slowly, she broke the seal.

Inside was a single sheet.

Her mother's handwriting covered both sides.

My darling Mara,

If Luca Moretti is standing beside you while you read this, then far too many things have gone wrong.

Mara's vision blurred.

She continued.

You may hear frightening things about him. Some will be true. Some will not. Judge him by what he does when nobody powerful is watching.

Years ago, I met a furious young man who thought strength meant never needing anyone.

He was wrong.

I hope by the time you meet him, he has learned that.

Mara glanced at Luca.

He was staring at the floor.

She continued reading.

Your father is complicated.

He has made choices I cannot forgive, but I do not believe he wants you hurt.

If Daniel ever tries to force you into Luca's protection, it means Richard Vale has returned.

Do not blindly trust either man.

Make them earn it.

Mara laughed through tears.

Of course.

Even from the grave Caroline was ordering powerful men to behave.

The final paragraph made Mara stop.

The money is not hidden in a bank.

It is hidden in something Richard can never own unless you give it to him.

Remember what I taught you:

Money is safest when it becomes something nobody can steal without revealing who they are.

Mara read it twice.

"What does that mean?"

Rebecca smiled.

"I think I know."

"What?"

"Your mother's foundation."

Mara froze.

The Caroline Ellison Foundation.

Shelters.

Legal-aid clinics.

Housing programs.

Scholarships.

Properties.

Mara whispered, "She bought assets."

Rebecca nodded.

"Through layered nonprofits."

"Thirty million dollars?"

"More now."

Daniel added quietly, "Much more."

Mara stared.

"Richard isn't looking for cash."

Luca understood first.

"He's looking for control."

Rebecca nodded.

"The ledger proves where the original money came from. If he obtains it and forces Mara to sign over foundation control, he can reclaim assets and destroy evidence."

Mara's pulse accelerated.

"Then we don't give it to him."

Rebecca smiled.

"Exactly."

Luca looked toward the windows.

"Dawn in forty minutes."

"What happens at dawn?" Mara asked.

"Vale will know his warehouse operation failed."

Rebecca answered instead.

"He won't wait."

As if summoned by the words, alarms sounded.

Rafael's voice exploded over the intercom.

"Perimeter breach!"

Luca spun toward the monitor.

Multiple vehicles were approaching the estate.

Fast.

Marco entered.

"At least twenty."

Luca looked at Mara.

"Safe room."

"No."

"Mara."

"I'm done hiding."

"This isn't a debate."

"Actually, it is."

Rebecca stood.

"She's right."

Luca glared.

"You don't get a vote."

Mara stepped directly in front of him.

"Luca."

He looked up.

She put one hand against his chest.

The gesture silenced him.

"I trust you."

Something passed through his eyes.

"But I need you to trust me too."

His jaw tightened.

"What are you asking?"

"Let me end this."

"How?"

Mara looked at the ledger.

"Richard wants me."

"No."

"He wants my signature."

"Still no."

"Then we give him what he thinks he wants."

Luca stared.

Mara continued.

"We make him confess why."

Rebecca slowly smiled.

Daniel looked terrified.

Luca looked furious.

Then thoughtful.

Finally:

"That's a terrible plan."

Mara nodded.

"Probably."

"It could get you killed."

"Then improve it."

Luca stared at her for another long moment.

Then his mouth curved slightly.

"There she is."

"Who?"

"The woman Caroline warned me about."

Mara smiled.

Outside, engines roared closer.

Richard Vale's convoy reached the gates.

Luca's men moved into position.

Mara picked up the marriage contract from the desk.

She looked at Luca.

"One more thing."

"What?"

She took his gold pen.

And signed her name.

Luca's expression changed.

"Mara."

"This isn't for protection."

"Then why?"

She leaned down until their faces were inches apart.

"Because I choose who stands beside me."

For once, Luca Moretti had no answer.

May you like

Then the mansion's main doors exploded inward.

And Richard Vale walked through the smoke holding a gun to Anne Whitaker's head.
