Chapter 5 - The Name Inside the Ledger

"Put it down, Mara."
Daniel's voice echoed through the warehouse.
She held the ledger tighter.
"No."
Richard Vale leaned against the railing beside him.
Late sixties.
Silver hair.
Expensive coat.
He looked more like a senator than a criminal patriarch.
Perhaps that was the point.
Luca rolled forward.
"Vale."
Richard smiled.
"Moretti."
"You broke into my house."
"No."
Richard glanced toward Daniel.
"He did."
Mara looked up at her father.
Daniel showed no shame.
"You threatened me?"
"I tried to scare you into leaving the letter sealed."
"You invaded my apartment."
"Necessary."
"You threatened to kill me."
Daniel's face shifted.
"I never intended harm."
Mara laughed.
It sounded bitter.
"You really believe that makes it better."
Richard sighed.
"This family drama would be touching if we weren't all standing inside a warehouse at midnight."
Luca looked toward the surrounding darkness.
"How many?"
Richard smiled.
"Enough."
Marco whispered, "Twelve visible."
Luca replied without moving his lips.
"More hidden."
Evan stepped beside Mara.
Daniel saw him.
Hatred transformed his face.
"You."
Evan stared upward.
"Miss me?"
"You should have stayed dead."
Mara looked at Daniel.
"You tried to kill him."
"He was dangerous."
"He was twelve!"
"He was a Moretti."
Luca's expression changed.
Daniel realized too late what he had said.
Luca spoke quietly.
"Say that again."
Richard lifted a hand.
"Let's not turn history into melodrama."
Luca ignored him.
"My cousin was twelve years old."
Daniel looked uneasy.
"He had stolen documents."
"He was a child."
"He was trained by Matteo."
"At twelve?"
Daniel's voice rose.
"You didn't know Matteo!"
Luca's eyes became colder.
"No. You made sure of that."
Richard watched with growing impatience.
"Enough."
He pointed to Mara.
"Ledger."
Mara stared.
"No."
Daniel descended the metal stairs.
"Sweetheart."
"Don't call me that."
"Give it to me."
"No."
His jaw tightened.
"Mara."
She stepped closer to Luca.
Daniel noticed.
His expression became disgusted.
"Look at yourself."
Mara's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
"Standing beside him like some obedient little bride."
"You tried to sell me to him."
"I tried to save you!"
"From what?"
"From him!"
Daniel pointed toward Luca.
Mara almost laughed.
"Your plan to save me from Luca was marrying me to Luca?"
"You don't understand."
"Then explain."
Daniel's chest rose.
For once his polished mask vanished.
"Your mother destroyed everything."
Mara went still.
"Careful."
"Caroline should have stayed out of things she didn't understand."
"What did she discover?"
"People survive by knowing when not to look."
"What did she discover?"
Daniel glanced toward Richard.
Richard's face warned him.
Mara saw it.
"You were stealing from the trust for Vale."
Daniel said nothing.
"Why?"
Richard answered.
"Because your father's businesses were never as successful as you believed."
Mara looked at Daniel.
He seemed suddenly older.
Richard continued.
"Twenty years ago, Daniel needed capital. I provided it."
"For what?"
"Expansion."
"And the price?"
"Access."
"To Mom's trust."
"Eventually."
Mara's stomach turned.
Daniel said, "I intended to repay everything."
"When?"
"I was going to."
"Nine years wasn't enough?"
"I lost more than expected."
Richard chuckled.
"Your father was never gifted with money."
Daniel glared at him.
Mara opened the ledger.
Luca said, "Mara."
She looked at him.
"Don't."
"Why?"
"It may contain names that put you in greater danger."
"I'm already standing in a warehouse surrounded by armed men."
A pause.
"Fair point."
Mara turned pages.
Dates.
Accounts.
Transfers.
Officials.
Companies.
Her mother's handwriting appeared in margins.
CHECK THIS.
ASK MATTEO.
DANIEL LIED.
Then one entry stopped Mara completely.
CAROLINE ELLISON - INSURANCE PAYMENT - $3,000,000.
Date:
Two days after her death.
Recipient:
D.E. Holdings.
Mara looked at her father.
"You received three million dollars when Mom died."
Daniel's face hardened.
"It was life insurance."
"That you never told me about."
"It was business coverage."
Mara turned another page.
A handwritten note beneath it:
POLICY INCREASED 30 DAYS BEFORE HOSPITALIZATION.
Her pulse accelerated.
"Why did you increase Mom's policy?"
Daniel said nothing.
Mara's voice dropped.
"Did you know she was going to die?"
"No."
"Did you cause it?"
"No!"
The denial came too quickly.
Luca watched Daniel closely.
Mara stepped forward.
"Look at me."
Daniel refused.
"Dad."
He finally did.
"Did you kill Mom?"
"No."
"Did Richard?"
Daniel's eyes flicked toward Vale.
That tiny movement was enough.
Richard's smile disappeared.
Luca noticed too.
"So that's it," Luca said.
Richard sighed.
"Nobody murdered Caroline."
"Then what happened?" Mara demanded.
Richard looked at Daniel.
"Tell her."
Daniel shook his head.
"Tell her."
"I said no."
Richard's voice hardened.
"You've disappointed me repeatedly tonight."
Daniel turned.
"You promised my daughter would be protected."
"I promised nothing."
Mara watched the alliance fracture.
Luca spoke quietly to Marco.
"Get ready."
Mara barely heard.
Richard descended the stairs.
"The truth, Mara, is less dramatic than murder."
He stopped twenty feet away.
"Your mother was already dying."
Mara's face tightened.
"She had cancer."
"Yes."
"That doesn't answer me."
"Daniel learned her condition was terminal before Caroline did."
Mara looked at Daniel.
"What?"
Daniel closed his eyes.
Richard continued.
"Her doctor was paid to delay certain information."
"Why?"
"Daniel needed time."
"For what?"
"To obtain signatures."
Mara felt nauseated.
"You kept Mom from knowing how sick she was?"
Daniel whispered, "I was trying to protect you."
"Stop saying that!"
Her voice echoed violently.
"You drugged her?"
"No."
"You manipulated her treatment?"
"No."
Richard said, "He manipulated information."
Mara stared at Daniel.
"Mom could have had more time."
"No."
"Could she?"
Daniel didn't answer.
"Could she?"
"Maybe weeks."
Mara's eyes filled.
Weeks.
A few more mornings.
A few more conversations.
A few more chances to say goodbye without believing there would always be tomorrow.
Daniel had stolen even that.
Luca rolled toward Mara.
He stopped close.
Not touching.
Present.
Mara steadied herself.
Richard pointed toward the ledger.
"Now give me the book."
Mara looked at him.
"No."
His expression hardened.
"I have been patient."
"I'm done caring."
Richard nodded toward the shadows.
Men moved.
Luca's guards raised weapons.
Daniel suddenly stepped between them.
"No shooting."
Richard ignored him.
Daniel turned.
"I said no!"
Richard looked almost amused.
"You still think you're in charge."
"She's my daughter."
"She is evidence."
Daniel's face changed.
Mara saw fear.
Real fear.
Richard raised one hand.
Luca immediately moved in front of Mara as far as his chair allowed.
Marco and Evan closed around her.
Mara grabbed Luca's shoulder.
"Don't."
He didn't look back.
"Stay behind me."
"No."
"Mara."
"I'm not hiding behind you."
"Then stay beside me."
She did.
Richard smiled faintly.
"Touching."
A gunshot exploded.
Everyone ducked.
But the shot had not come from Richard's men.
Daniel stood frozen.
Blood appeared across his shoulder.
He looked shocked.
Richard looked even more surprised.
A second shot shattered the overhead light.
Darkness swallowed half the warehouse.
Men shouted.
Luca's team moved immediately.
Marco dragged Daniel behind a steel column.
Evan pulled Mara down.
Luca grabbed the ledger.
"Exit!"
They moved toward a side door.
Gunfire erupted.
Not from one side.
From three.
Richard shouted orders.
Someone else had entered the warehouse.
Another group.
Unknown.
Luca yelled, "Mara!"
She ran toward him.
An attacker appeared.
Evan struck him.
Marco fired.
The side door opened.
Cold river air rushed in.
They reached the vehicle.
Daniel staggered behind them, clutching his shoulder.
Mara stared.
"Why are we taking him?"
Luca answered.
"Because someone wants him dead."
Daniel looked at Luca.
For the first time, fear replaced arrogance.
"They know."
"Who?"
Daniel looked toward Mara.
"I wasn't stealing the money for myself."
Mara froze.
"What?"
Daniel struggled to breathe.
"Richard thought I was."
"Then where did it go?"
Daniel looked at the ledger.
"Your mother moved it."
Mara shook her head.
"Mom?"
"Caroline created a hidden account."
"Why?"
"To protect you."
Luca's eyes narrowed.
"How much?"
Daniel whispered, "Nearly thirty million."
Everyone went silent.
Mara stared.
"Where?"
Daniel shook his head.
"I don't know."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"She hid it from me."
"Then why is everyone after you?"
"Because they think I know."
Luca leaned closer.
"Who is they?"
Daniel looked terrified.
"Richard isn't the person at the top."
Mara felt cold.
"Who is?"
Daniel's lips parted.
Then a bullet tore through the SUV window.
Glass exploded.
Daniel collapsed.
Mara screamed.
Marco pulled her down.
Luca covered her with his body.
Outside, headlights appeared at the end of the pier.
One black car.
Then another.
Then five more.
They stopped in a perfect line.
The center door opened.
A woman stepped out.
Daniel saw her through the broken window.
His face went white.
"No."
Mara looked.
The woman was around sixty.
Elegant.
Silver-blond hair.
And Mara had seen her face in old family photographs.
Luca whispered, "Who is she?"
Daniel stared as if he had seen a ghost.
"My sister."
Mara's blood ran cold.
Daniel had always told her his sister died before Mara was born.
The woman walked toward the SUV.
May you like
Then she called Mara by a name nobody had used since Caroline died.
And Mara opened the door.
