Chapter 4 - The Wedding Invitation

Julian stood with the photograph in his hand.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

Evelyn watched from several feet away.

“Who is Adrian Cole?” Julian asked.

Vanessa’s eyes closed.

Charles reacted first.

“What did you say?”

Julian turned the photograph around.

Adrian Cole.

The name meant nothing to Evelyn.

But it clearly meant something to Charles.

His jaw tightened.

Margaret whispered, “Oh, God.”

Julian looked between his parents.

“You know him?”

Charles took the photograph.

It showed Vanessa standing beside a dark-haired man at what appeared to be a charity event.

Nothing intimate.

Nothing incriminating.

Except the date.

Twenty-two months before Vanessa announced her pregnancy.

“Adrian worked for Whitmore Capital,” Charles said.

“Worked?”

“He left.”

Vanessa recovered enough to speak.

“This proves nothing.”

Evelyn agreed.

“A photograph doesn’t prove paternity.”

Everyone looked at her.

She continued.

“If you want the truth, use evidence.”

Vanessa glared at her.

“You walk into my wedding with four secret children and now you’re giving advice?”

“My children weren’t secret because their father was uncertain.”

The sentence landed hard.

Julian looked away.

Evelyn regretted the cruelty immediately, but she did not retract it.

Vanessa gathered her dress.

“This wedding is over.”

She started toward the mansion.

Julian followed.

“Vanessa.”

“Leave me alone.”

“No.”

She turned.

For the first time, the polished bride disappeared.

“I said leave me alone!”

Guests stared.

Julian lowered his voice.

“I need the truth.”

“You want truth now?”

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“Where was this obsession with truth when your father told you what to do two years ago?”

Julian flinched.

Evelyn did too.

Vanessa pointed toward her.

“You let him destroy your marriage.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“No. It doesn’t.”

She walked inside.

The wedding guests were eventually dismissed.

Charles’s staff called it a family emergency.

That was certainly one description.

Hours later, Evelyn sat in a private drawing room with Rachel and the children.

Julian entered alone.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

He looked older than she remembered.

“Can I meet them?”

Evelyn’s defenses rose.

“You already have.”

“You know what I mean.”

She did.

Noah was asleep.

Grace sat coloring.

Ethan was arranging wooden blocks.

Lily watched Julian with suspicious gray-blue eyes.

Julian crouched several feet away.

“Hi.”

Lily hid behind Evelyn.

Julian smiled sadly.

“Fair.”

Ethan studied him.

Then pointed.

“Same hair.”

Evelyn almost laughed.

Julian did.

The sound broke something between them.

Not forgiveness.

Not yet.

Just the wall of absolute hostility.

He sat on the carpet.

For twenty minutes, he let the children approach him.

No demands.

No declarations.

When Noah woke, Julian stared at him as though someone had returned a missing piece of his own face.

Eventually Rachel took the children upstairs.

Julian remained.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Evelyn folded her arms.

“Why didn’t you finish that voicemail?”

His expression changed.

“What voicemail?”

“The day after the divorce.”

She repeated the sentence.

Julian frowned.

“I don’t remember it cutting off.”

“It did.”

“What I was going to say wasn’t what you think.”

“What was it?”

He looked down.

“I had doubts.”

“About Vanessa?”

“About everything.”

Evelyn’s anger returned.

“After I signed.”

“Yes.”

“Convenient.”

“I know.”

He rubbed his face.

“My father told me Vanessa’s pregnancy had already become known to several board members. He said if I fought the situation publicly, it would destroy everyone.”

“So you sacrificed me.”

“Yes.”

The direct admission surprised her.

Julian looked at her.

“I did.”

No excuse.

No defense.

“I’ve spent two years knowing that.”

Evelyn swallowed.

“Did you know I was pregnant?”

“No.”

She watched him carefully.

“My bloodwork was accessed using your mother’s authorization.”

Julian stood.

“What?”

“You heard me.”

“My mother?”

“Two days after I left.”

He looked genuinely stunned.

Evelyn believed him.

That did not mean Margaret was innocent.

They found her downstairs.

Margaret was alone.

When Evelyn placed the authorization record in front of her, the older woman went still.

Julian asked, “Did you know?”

Margaret did not answer.

“Mom.”

She sat down.

“I knew there was a possibility.”

Evelyn felt sick.

“You knew.”

“I saw the lab request.”

“And you said nothing?”

Margaret looked ashamed.

“I didn’t know there were four.”

“That matters?”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“No. It doesn’t.”

“Why?”

Margaret looked toward Charles’s closed office door.

“Because your father told me not to interfere.”

Julian’s face hardened.

“Dad knew too?”

Margaret whispered, “He knew you might be pregnant.”

Evelyn stared toward the office.

Charles had known.

Perhaps not about the quadruplets.

But enough.

She walked toward the door.

Julian followed.

“Evelyn.”

She reached for the handle.

Before she touched it, the door opened.

Charles stood there.

And beside him was a man Evelyn had never seen.

Vanessa stood behind them, crying.

Julian looked at the stranger.

His voice dropped.

“Adrian.”

The man looked directly at him.

May you like

“I think you and I need to talk about the boys.”

Then Charles closed the door behind them...
